Belgian Strong Dark Ale |  9.20% ABV

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes/Commercial Description:
This strong Belgian ale is so rich, so sweet and so luscious, that we wouldn’t hesitate calling it pure lust in a bottle. During the making of this beer the general mood in the brewhouse turned somewhat sensual if not downright erotic! And everybody involved in the brewing spontaneously engaged in heavy cheek kiss¬ing. If it wasn’t for the unexpected ring of the doorbell things could have gone even further… This beer is so lustful that we cannot vouch for the consequences if you serve this to your loved one over a candlelight din¬ner. This may very well result in a lifelong payment of child support.

We have brewed a beer with the most sensual of sugars we could find at our local grocery store. We were tempted to spice it up with well-renowned aphrodisiacs like Spanish fly or oysters, but frankly we didn’t see the need for it.

Brewed with Pilsner-, Cara-Munich-, Melanoidin-, Wheat-,Chocolate-malt. Demerera sugar and Dark Candi-sirup. Northern Brewer- and Saaz-hops. Fermented with a well known Trappist yeast

From its seductive label to its succulent sweetness and its intoxicating effects- the notions of admiration turns to abandon lust in a hurry. There's no real surprise that the beer takes on that namesake when capturing the Belgianesque of forbidden fruit, peppery spice, and lavish sweetness.

"Lust" pours with a hazy and rusty pour- capturing the reds, browns and purple-ish tones that make the tawny Belgian ale look its part. A creamy and dense pour of foam sheets the glass with ivory-stained foam as its lace trickles down the glass in broken spirals.

Heavy sweetness captures the nose with a breadth of brown sugar and pulled candy. As its fruity waft overcomes the olfactories, it does so with cherry, red grape, plum, date and fig. Those earthen-sweet aromas brace against its counterpart of pepper spice, cinnamon and nutmeg.

To taste, its sweetness elevates further- coating the mouth with its candied sweetness of powdered sugar, brown sugar, maple and aspartame. The overall taste of pulled candy is the perfect counterpart for fruity note going forth- grape, date, cherry, apple and apricot provide a jammy taste as its peppery character strikes a tepid balance. Trailing with boozy spice, its warmth is akin to rum-cake, fruitcake and coffee cake.

Its full body is luscious with that sweet coat upon the mouth. As its cake-like bready sweetness subsides, the alcohol warmth sets in with its sweet spiciness, its dryness and its peppery bite as the ale attempts its long as sweet finish.

Lust is simply a fruity but nondescript ale that shares as much English Old Ale attributes as it does of Belgian Strong Dark Ale- nothing wrong with that, but it means that this Frankenstein- type of beer becomes confused to the palate and stretches the taste buds a bit too far.

Bottle: Poured a dark brown color ale with a large foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of light dried fruit notes with some candy and light residual sugar notes. Taste is also a mix between some candy and light dried fruit with some sweet fruity ester and some residual sugar notes. Body is a bit light for style with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Well brewed though fell a bit short of some of complexity associated with such a yeast strain.

Clearish red-brown colour with no real head. A hard pour with the rest of the bottle produces a creamy, tan head. Great colour.

Wonderful chocolate, fruit and spice aroma. Some nuttiness and plenty of malt. More raisins and even slightly lighter fruits. Nice.

Lovely rich malt with lots of melanoidin. Fruity raisins and stone fruit. Light hints of chocolate. Plenty of sweetness. Some more esters. Light cinnamon and clove notes. Some berry notes. Very, very sexy.

Medium body with moderately-high carbonation. Very good.

A really solid Belgian style ale. While it sounds corny the first thing that came to mind was that this is a very sexy beer. Despite not looking amazing, it slinks in and out of the palate with plenty of sweetness, great fruitiness and a fleeting spicy character.

Another one in the series that has a good label and spiel and pours a dark brown non see through hue which is very dark, the smell is candy sugar, molasses, vinegar and candied figs, the mouthfeel is syrupy and medium bodied while still managing to be quite heavy with tastes of cherry puree, raisins soaked in brandy, honey and burnt toffee and overall its like a nice heavy port and definately a sipper but probably wouldnt buy again anytime soon cheers.

I had this beer on Borefts beer festival 2011.

A - A nice clear red beer with a tiny white head that stings to the glass. No carbonation visible.

S - A good smell of sour cherries.

T - Its beer honey mixed with cherries, very very sweet. The sweetness is very dominant in this one.

M - Medium carbonation and sticky due to the honey and sugar.

O - To much honey, I don't like that flavor in a beer.
