Take a good thing and make it even better - that's the philosophy behind Double Black Mash. This hue Imperial Stout was easily big and rich enough after the first mashing, but we thought what the heck let's give it another spin. So we mashed it in a second time doubling everything that was already good while aiming for great. All grain, heavy duty, no nonsense. Did we hit what we aimed at? Well, that's really up to you to decide. If you like it big a black this is your kinda beer for sure.

2018 bottle. Watched it sit on shelves for years. Craft beer guy always recommended it, but I kept passing…until now. Poured cellar temp to a mug. Dark, shiny black color. No notable head, very still overall. Need to get your schnozz into the glass, but you get a decent hit of deep, dark malts. Flavor is stellar. While it is neither barrel-aged nor adjuncted, there are notes reminiscent of a great barrel-aged stout, e.g., bright bourbony notes, wood, leather, molasses, etc. Mouthfeel is spectacular, so full and luxurious, most likely a direct effect of the double mashing. Alcohol has a little bite, but only bringing that bourbon-esque quality out amidst the extremely dense stout base. Buy it if you see it.

*2018 batch reviewed May, 2022*

a: silky dark jet black. no reflection, no light penetrates. looks like an oil slick. 1/2 finger deep dark tan head that fades very quickly

s: absolutely huge nose on this one. loads of roasted malts and leather upfront. dark cherries, milk chocolate, dark chocolate, and cocoa powder. a touch of fig and loads of molasses. dark caramel and some generic dark berries. a hint of fruit cake and then more roasted malts and some cola. the finish has an almost woody, nutty characteristic to it. what a great aroma

t: oh yes, this follows the nose remarkably well. upfront you're hit with roasted malts, a big sticky toffee note, and a faint alcohol tinge. intense molasses, fig, and candied plums. raisins, milk chocolate, dark chocolate, and fresh dough. leather and a hint of wood from the roast. finishes quite sweet from the dark fruit and caramel, but theres some roast to balance it out

m: heavy, sticky mouthfeel. low carbonation

o: again, i am reviewing a 2018 batch in 2022....this beer is freaking fantastic. it is complex, and extremely well-balanced. this beer is a perfect example of why a plain old Imperial Stout makes for the perfect night cap. awesome stuff

500 ml bottle, batch #601, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 12.0%. Pitch black colour, large dark brown head - this is one of the darkest beers I’ve ever seen. Lovely roasty aroma, dark chocolate galore, also coffee and woodwork. Heavily roasty flavour, also sweet and malty. Plenty of sweetened espresso coffee, dark chocolate and caramel. A solid roasty and hoppy bitterness in the finish. Nearly too powerful, sweet and rich for me - but only "nearly".

Solid black motor oil appearance.
Body is definitely above average with a very feint light amount of carbonation. Has a thick, slightly oily creamy feel.
Aroma is boozy but not astringent alcohol. Some wood, licorice, and dark fruit are slightly more prominent. Theres some coffee, chocolate, char and wood as well. If they made a candle that smelled like this I would actually get one.
Taste is again boozy but didn't come off like alcohol like some high abv beer can.very mild sweetness and for the most part followed the aroma.
This gets high reviews for a reason. Not a post lawn mowing beer but as a nice splurge its excellent

Pours jet black with a medium head and mild lacing.

Tastes heavily of dark fruit especially prunes and raisins with a very noticeable charred malt and treacle. Has a very pleasant earthy-char aftertaste. Nice one.

750 mL bottle. Inky black body. Smells of licorice, roasted malt, and booze. Tastes quite boozy too. Heavy roasted malt and licorice. Some dark fruits and brown bread. Heavy and boozy. Excellent.

From the 22 oz bottle in a snifter. This solid little brew
pours a rich obsidian with a nice head of brown foam
that settles to a thick ring with nice light lacing. Nose
of rich dark fruit notes of blackberry and raspberry,
dark cocoa, dark coffee, and subtle black licorice / anise
with touches of strong booze. Flavors hit the note with
dark bakers cocoa, dark rich coffee, dark berry notes, and
a light bitter hop note intermingled with cream and brulee.
Very nice mouth feel; smooth, light carbonation, rich,
coating, full body, and finishing with a bitter malt
finish.

Overall----WOW. Period!

Cheers

At least a real thick Imperial Stout, almost old style now, not some kind of pastry stout anyway.

Very dense dark body.

A nice mix of soy sauce and motor oil and I like it.

Definitely a sipper (I finished my 33cl glass in no less than 2 or 3 hours) but a very complex and multi-layered one.

Nice

Totally black, impenetrable with fine ebony foam, compact and with good persistence. Perfume smoked wood, dark chocolate, coffee, licorice, vanilla, ash, hint of meat that takes away a little elegance. On the palate there is a slightly sweet beginning, molasses and a lot of malt, chocolate, dark fruits, but immediately the bitter and abrasive notes of coffee roasting come forward. Pleasant sensations of vanilla alternate with tobacco, licorice and wood notes. Very hoppy herbaceous and earthy aftertaste, ash and a robust alcoholic persistence but not intrusive. Dense and velvety sip, low carbonation

L: Darkest shade of brown before black with a brief half finger head, dissapearing to a dark tan ring with spotty lacing.

S: Immediate soy sauce, roast/char, and toasted raw sugar, a bit of dark fruit like overripe cherries.

T: Wildly bitter for hows sweet it smells, sweet strong soy sauce umami (almost mushroomy), and a coffee like bitterness.
I expect to find cocoa, but it's just caramelized sugars.

F: Reasonably viscous with a bitter bite and sweet syrup. The right level of carbonation for weight.

O: This is a well thought out brew, but falls behind many more balanced stouts. In the end the one-two punch of soy sauce and the bitter aftertaste could not be rounded out by it's cloying sweetness.

Found this beauty on Tavour. Oh my, this one was special.

Pour: Thick and black. Looked and poured like motor oil until a deep brown head with hints of red (burnt caramel perhaps) formed. The head had the consistency of shaving cream was tall and never fully faded. Beautiful lacing on the glass. This may be the prettiest pour I have ever seen.

Aroma: Caramel notes with a sweetness that was hard to describe but incredibly pleasing.

Taste: Wonderfully thick mouthfeel that matched the pour. Flavor had notes of chocolate and caramel and again with that pleasant sweet note that I noticed in the smell that I couldn't quite define. Slight bitterness on the back end. Alcohol was lost in everything else which was incredible given that this one is 12%.

Overall: I would drink this any day. This bottle happened to go down my hatch amidst an incredible blizzard which gave a nice ambiance for this brew.

Jet black body; thick, creamy tan head; incredible sheets of foam coating the glass. Deep blended aroma of dark chocolate, cocoa, roasted and charred grain. Semi-sweet chocolate flavor powerhouse; chocolate fudge; sweet but with a hint of well-hidden alcohol. Extremely heavy body; viscous and chewy; warm on the palate.

What an incredible beer. The mouthfeel delivers some fantastic density and richness to the palate. The flavor is nearly as intense and satisfying. Just what one would expect for a hardcore northern European / Nordic imperial stout.

This is really nice - pitch black beer with lots of molasses and char, and undercurrents of chocolate and espresso - mostly sweet, with some bitterness on the finish; full-bodied and smooth, a little sticky - a solid imperial stout...
