Poured from can to a pint glass. No date I could locate on the can to indicate packaging or freshness.

A - The beer pours a deep dark brown color. I'd call it black if not for the brown edges when held to the light. A nice 2 finger milk chocolate colored head with very good retention and lacing. The head slowly fades to a thick film that lasts throughout and leaves gobs of lacing.

S - A strong roasted malt presences: black patent roast, coffee, chocolate tones. The coconut isn't as dominant as expected and provides a nice compliment in toasty character to the roasted malts. Nice well-balanced nose.

T - Similar to the nose in that the first flavors are the roasted malts on the tongue. Immediately the roast is paired with a malty sweetness and a mild bitterness. The coffee and chocolate malt character develops in the middle. It's not until the back end that the coconut flavor develops. The beer finishes with a lingering roast flavor complimented with a light light coconut toast.

M - Medium carbonation and medium bodied.

O - A good offering from Maui Brewing. I think the flavors somewhat struggle within the beer to really blend to a cohesive flavor. It's good but could be great. I'd still happily put a few down there for something different than the usual Porter.

what a great beer. i have had the pleasure of trying this one soo many times. poured from a can to a pint glass

nice burnt amber color with a smooth and even head of off white that coats the sides of the glass and really offers up a nice and well rounded view.

aroma of caramel, coconut, vanilla, other sweet notes, lots of stuff going on here but maintainig its session drinkable factor the whole time. smooth and creamy with lots of caramel and hints of grain bouncing around all over, clean finish with just the right amount of flavor.

overall an outstanding beer i would love to try again

Thanks to my wife for bringing this one back from a business trip to the west coast.

A: Pours an opaque very dark black in color with just the slightest hints of dark brown when held up to the light. The beer has a half finger tall tan head that quickly reduces to a thin layer over the surface of the beer with a slightly thicker ring at the edges of the glass. Significant lacing is observed.

S: I really like the aroma of this beer with the heavy dark roasted malts and the wonderful smell of the toasted coconut. Some hints of molasses as well.

T: A very well balanced flavor to this beer, not too sweet and not too bitter. The taste follows the smell with the dark roasted malt body and a little bit of molasses sweetness. That is followed by some bittersweet chocolate and the toasted coconut.

M: On the heavier side of medium bodied with moderate to high amounts of carbonation.

O: While this beer has the look of a stout, it is much lighter and easier to drink. The beer is very easy to drink and could be quite sessionable. I love the toasted coconut flavor without any additional sweetness, makes this beer very delicious. Definitely one to get again though next time might warrant a trip to Maui :)

My first from this brewery, thanks to dcloeren. Also interesting looking can, although canned 9/14/11, over a year old now unfortunately.

Pours a fluffy bubbly large darker chocolate colored almost 2 finger head, that fades fairly quickly at first, then slows a bit but eventually leaves nothing to cover the top, with spotty messy lacing, over super dark molasses brown color with barely any light coming through almost making it black looking.

Nose is nice, lots of chocolate, dark chocolate, cocoa, little syrupy like with caramel, vanilla, toasted biscuit, with nice toasted coconut undertones that come through fairly well, nice toasted coconut, nutty aromas, and chocolate, slight almond joy like nose.

Taste starts a bit syrupy and semi sweet, with a light caramel and syrupy like flavor. That quickly turns to nice cocoa, dark chocolate, fairly bitter dry chocolate powder. Also some vanilla, Then plenty of toasty, toasted coconut again, toasted almond, toasted grain, etc. Nice coconut that is light overall and heavy, but not overpowering. it does get a slight off flavor from the coconut oils breaking down, but that's most likely from the age. Little biscuit malt. Finish is semi bitter, earthy hop bitterness with a slight spicy quality, then nice coconut, chocolate, and vanilla lingering and quite dry.

Mouth is med to a bit heavier bodied but still feels somehow watery, decent carb.

Overall pretty good, nice flavors of chocolate, cocoa, vanilla, and lots of toasty coconut. Pretty tasty, but not perfect, and the age shows a little. I would like to try it on draft sometime, hopefully in Hawaii. Wormtown NORM might be the only coconut porter better than this though.

Charred walnut with sepia highlights. Some stouts aren't this dark. The upper third of the glass is occupied by a fetching crown the color of wet sand. This is good looking beer that leaves even better looking lace. So far, so excellent.

The nose delivers a modest amount of chocolate malt and almost no coconut. I expected the brewers to use coconut oil, but it looks like they went with toasted coconut instead.

It takes a while for coconut to appear, both within each mouthful and in general. Finally, on the finish, it begins to seep in at the edges. Coconut is one of those flavors that can be easily overdone, especially in something like beer, but it's too subtle here. Warming turns up the flavor knob from 3/10 to 5/10.

Coconut or no coconut, this is a well-brewed porter. Baker's chocolate and coffee beans lead the way, thanks to no fewer than six different malts. I'm not sure why the brewery calls it 'robust', however. Compared to Michelob Amber Bock perhaps, but not compared to a real robust porter.

The body/mouthfeel is pretty close to where it should be. It needs a fraction more heft and a few more bubbles, as long as they result in creaminess rather than fizziness. Then again, if the beer is being consumed on the beach, or at least in hot and humid weather, the slightly light mouthfeel is probaby ideal.

Maui Brewing CoCoNut PorTeR is good beer that stands out because it comes in cans and because it uses an ingredient that is considered to be exotic. Although it doesn't venture as far outside the box as it should, better to have a coconut-accented porter than a porter-accented pina colada.

Epic brew from Maui! Light nutty brown pour from 12oz. can. Nice two finger frothy head and a real coconut aroma. The coconut hits the nose immediately and is a proper introduction to what flavor was to come. Great coconut flavor, not overly sweet, and well balanced with a malty mocha notes. The creaminess of the beer is spectacular, it's richness in body is truely unique in my experience with porters. Grade A Maui, hopefully I won't have to drive 12 hours to get your next offering!

A - Dark brown/ black with a very very light brown head.

S - A sweet smell. There isn't much coconut in the nose, but there is dark chocolate and coffee.

T - The dark chocolate and coffee flavors are the most prominent. There is also a very slight coconut flavor, but it is not very powerful. The finish is a slight bitterness from the hops, but it is a really tasty finish.

M - Medium body with fairly heavy carbonation that is pleasant on the tongue.

O - I am usually underwhelmed by porters, but this is quite tasty and has a lot of great things working in its favor.

12oz can. Pours black with a medium creamy tan head that quickly goes to a thin film that leaves some lacing.

The aroma is sweet toasted, roasted fudgy chocolate and coconut. As it warms, the coconut dominates.

The flavor is a bit of a mess - acidic chocolate malts with a little coconut and some charred bitterness in the finish. The mouthfeel is light to medium boded and watery.

Overall, showed promise, but the flavors were very disjoint and it was thin and watery.

12oz can poured into City Beer Store tulip. Appearance is dark black , tannish minimal head, that diminished to nothing..smell is chocolate malt, coconut, and a little woodsy effervessence as well. Taste is smooth, starts out with semi-sweet cocolate, and finished with a subtle coconut flavor, and roasted malts definately apparent. Mouthfeel is medium/full bodied with bitey carbonation for a Porter..a good summer porter for sure..overall, good, not amazing, however very solid.

Thanks to Exiled for sharing this can. This is a beer I have wanted to try for a long time.

The beer pours a dark brown color with a tan head. The aroma is coconut, caramel and chocolate. About what I expected.

The flavor is roasted malt, chocolate and coconut. The chocolate notes are very similar to dry, powdered hot chocolate and is a little bit chalky.

Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.
