12 oz can, English dimpled pint

A – Very dark brown to black, mostly opaque. A huge, frothy head of about two inches, medium tan in color, lingers for a long while on top, sudsy and gorgeous.

S – Coconut is very high in the mix, along with sweet chocolate and some toffee aromas. Maybe some vanilla in the background. Very sweet on the nose. Some earthy hops are present, though they contribute more bitterness here than anything else.

T – Very malty sweet, milky chocolate and sweet coconut, but not at all cloying. Again, some vanilla is present in the background, along with some darker caramel/toffee notes. The hop flavor is pretty limited here, some herbal/earthy quality, but contributing a moderate level of hop bitterness to help balance out the sweetness. The balance is towards sweet however.

M – Very high carbonation, sudsy from the moment the can is opened (I’ve had a couple gushers with these in the past). The body is medium, probably a bit heavier but the carbonation helps lighten it up. Fairly dry in spite of the sweetness in the flavor, malt sweetness and hop bitterness both present but balanced towards sweet.

O – This is one of my all-time go to beers. In spite of the darkness, it is highly drinkable any time of the year thanks to the high carbonation and the refreshing, different coconut flavors. Every time I think I probably won’t like this as much the next time I try it, it surprises me all over again. Perfectly crafted, preserves well in the can, goes down easy.

Beer is alright. Like a few others that commented on here it does not taste like any coconut. The beer has a rich coffee like taste that isn't sweet. For the price of a 4 pack here in Hawaii I think it's not worth it. It's a decent porter in my opinion, but that's about it. It's still a quality beer it doesn't taste cheap. Different strokes for different folks. I love dark beer, but won't be getting another pack of this no time soon.

Nose features black coffee, cocoa powder, roasted notes.

If you want to buy this because you like coconut and the idea of a coconut porter sounds delicious, then don't buy this. It's a porter. Bitter espresso finish. Dry cocoa aftertaste. Watery slightly sour mouthfeel. I don't know where they get off calling it coconut. I'm even drinking it with dark chocolate coconut almonds and still, almost nothing. Bit of a metallic taste too when I stretch for the coconut I get an unpleasant metal. Meet disappointed in this beer. Just call it a porter.

L: is very dark and black
S: is bitter coco and licorice and a faint coconut smell.
T:is a good porter clean tasting, spicyness and licorice. With a SOY sauce taste. Of you have ever had Thai dark soy sauce this is reminiscent of it. But it does not have a sweetened or toasted coconut flavor. It is good for the price point.

I really liked this beer. One of few I have to completely disagree with the ratings. Maybe people are thrown off by the coconut, but it's a solid porter, with a smooth, full mouth feel, and a well balanced coconut flavor in the finish.

A: Pours a dark brown color with a slight reddish tint around the edges when held to a light.
S: I mainly got black coffee and unsweetened dark chocolate or cocoa powder.
T: Follows the nose closely. Black coffee and unsweetened dark chocolate or cocoa powder. Hop bitterness mid tongue balances the beer. Dry on the palate and easy to drink. No harsh flavors here.
O: A solid Porter. There are better alternatives but this brew is still solid. Sadly I got no coconut flavor at all.

355ml can poured into tulip 5/12/14

A dark cola with enough clarity to see half way to the other side under the large and loose foam that falls quickly leaving just a couple random patches of lace

S chocolate, vanilla, earthy leafy hops, coco powder, and a hint of coconut oil in the background, reminds me of tanning oil but its faint

T just a hint of char, more earthy notes, almost nutty, not far off the smell, tastes good but not all that intense

M somewhat light for a porter but the bubbles fluff it up a little, a little slick on the palate and I think there's more flavor on the finish then while your drinking it

O one of those beers that's good but could use more of everything, if they pumped up the intensity this would be memorable

I've heard about this beer and was stoked to pick it up in my local market but at nearly 16$ a 4 pack I can't see myself buying it again

Canned 082814 at 40 degrees into a nonic
Aroma of roasted malt
Head average (4 cm), light brown, frothy, diminishing to 4 mm ring and 2 mm layer
Lacing fair - broken rings and stalactites of small bubbles
Body dark brown/black, clear
Flavor of roasted malt, not really picking up any coconut, ends slightly bitter; no hops, no alcohol, no diacetyl
Palate medium, watery, soft carbonation

Appearance 3.75, Aroma 4, Flavor 3.75, Palate 3.75, Overall 3.75
Somewhat disappointed - this is an adequate porter but I was hoping for some coconut taste and didn't find any.

Black color with red highlights and a thick caramel head with good retention.
Delicious aroma with lots of high grade cocoa chocolate and coffee. Hints of almonds and vanilla. Feels very natural, I could smell this forever.
Flavor with notes of spices, coffee, cocoa, earthy hops, dark fruits, vanilla and burnt coconut. Dry aftertaste with a medium bitterness. The coconut is mild, not predominating.
Light to medium creamy body with good carbonation.
Very drinkable, assertive and flavorful Porter. Nice burnt coconut and coffee marriage.

Pour dark wood like brown in color with a big finger and a half fluffy tan head. Aroma is a robust porter to style with notes of coco powder, chocolate malt, herbal hops and a slight metallic note on the end. Taste follows the nose with flavors of coco, chocolate malt, some faint hints of coconut and slightly metallic in the finish. Mouthfeel is medium bodied and mildly carbonated.

On tap at Chuck's 85 St. Dark colored, not much head and somewhat cloudy. A little lace lingers with each sip. Aroma of coffee and espresso with a bit of smoky coconut. Sweet tasting, with bread and a tad bit of sourness. Very light for a porter. Not much carbonation and a fairly short finish.

Can brought back from Flagstaff, AZ. Full notes taken when consumed.

A- Can pours out with a black body but not an oily thick appearance. The head is frothy and creamy rising just above a finger with decent retention. A sheet of lace followed by spots.

S- Cocoa powder and toasted coconut make up most of whats happening here with a malty overall feel. Roasted, caramel and toasty cereal grains with slight hops.

T- Chocolate malts provide the biggest flavors with a decent amount of toasted coconut right beyond it. Mediumly roasted grains, moderate sweetness, caramel, cereal and light earthy hop notes. Dark fruit hints.

MF- Fluffy and foamy consistency to a light end body as far as modern Porters go. Carbonation is moderately high and perpetuates the texture. Finishes with slight roast bitterness.

A good porter with an emphasis on cocoa roasty malts and toasted coconut coming in just below that. Could use just a tiny bit of body to support those flavors.

Twelve ounce can.

A: Pours a dark brown with reddish highlights under a solid 1" thick mocha head which lingers before settling to a thin cap and leaves splotchy lace.

N: Roast, malts, mild chocolate, very faint coconut (could be power of suggestion) and vanilla.

T: Dark bittersweet chocolate, vanilla and roasted malts with a hint of toasted coconut on warming.

M: Moderate body and medium carbonation. Smooth, creamy, roasty finish.

O: Expecting lots more coconut here, but still a decent porter.

I wanted to drink some taste of the islands that I have been to several times because I love COCONUT. This was a great porter. Creamy and rich, but just one problem. It didn't taste like coconut very much. I was looking forward to some good coconut taste because it's hard to find any coconut beer. The other great coconut beer that was brewed by Goose Island Bourbon County Stout w/ Coconut is only limited release and only in Chicago! I've seen people selling bottles of that or $100!
Overall taste- This is a great beer that after it warms a little has just a tad of coconut after taste
but instead of just putting more into what it says on the label and picture into the actual taste a lot more people would buy this niche beer.

I poured a can into a pint glass.

Appearance- Dark brown color with two fingers worth of tan head. Loads of foamy lacing.

Smell- Roasted malt aroma with hints of chocolate.

Taste- Roasted malt flavor with notes of chocolate and toffee. Tiniest hint of coconut.

Mouthfeel- Full bodied and smooth.

Overall- Overall a pretty good beer, but I was a little disappointed in this. I was expecting more coconut flavor from a beer with "coconut" in it's name.

Appearance – A dark brown/black color with a nice thick tan head and light wet lacing.

Smell – Roasted malt, with a hint of sweet coconut.

Taste – Taste is similar to the smell, but also includes hops.

Mouthfeel –Lightly carbonated, smooth, and creamy, with a mild hoppy aftertaste.

Drinkability – The coconut is mild, and I think even people that don’t like coconut would enjoy this. It’s goes down easy, and is a great effort from Hawaii. Another reviewer said this would go well with angel food cake and I think he’s right.

Can from out west. Thanks homies!

A - Dark brown, with a nice healthy tan head. Quintessential porter.

S - Dark malt (dur), chocolate, toffee.

T - Rich and full of flavor, amazing for 6%. Milk chocolate with some sweetness taken off, sweet toffee and caramel, vanilla, slight smoke and a coconut tinge throughout to give it a little something unique. Slighty bitter finish. Godly aftertaste. Amazing.

Do not go into this expecting a coconut bomb. It is subtle, but still very much there.

M - Bubbly and light, coating, quenching, smooth.

O - Went into this expecting great things, and was not disappointed. A new favorite porter, it's a shame that it isn't readily available in the mid-west.

I was in search of this beer for awhile and was excited to find it in LA. This is a fine porter but where is the coconut?

I get mostly milk chocolate, and java with if anything a slight minty note...it tastes great but I was expecting some coconut to this.

Body is medium to full....nice and creamy. texture..very full flavored but no coconut notes..

Pour a dark deep brown with a frothy tan head....

Terrific. Just terrific. Though I don't smell much of coconut (intentional?) I do sense a hint of that roasted, toasted bite at the end. The mouthfeel isn't too tacky, or tacky at all. Its mellow, but full. Reminds me of Olde Engine Oil, though much more sedated. In a good - in a great way. One things for sure, I'll be coming back for more. Highly recommended.

Can > Pint Glas

A - Rich brown black with two fingers of khaki foamy head, thick lacing.
S - Massive roasted oats and malt, a little earthy mineral traces, very little of the coconut is present here.
T - Flavor is packed with a ton of roasted malt flavors, a hint of smoke, more of that mineral trace coming through, and definitely a toasted almond and coconut spread out evenly through your palate.
M - Surprsingly smooth, not overly rich or sweet.
O - Excellent use of coconut here, wish I could pick up more in the aroma, but the flavor is wonderful

MF-pop like carbonation , feels full bodied

Ov-poor beer , bad porter , should be a one & done

12 fl oz. can, with canned on aloha date 01/06/2014 printed on the bottom of the can. My first encounter with this beer and this brewery, generously provided as an extra from Texan 956. Excited to have this beer; the premise sounds lovely.

Poured into a clear balloon snifter.

A - Pours a dark milk chocolate brown; nearly opaque in the glass with some cola color showing near the edges. Two fingers of creamy khaki-chocolate head with some nice scattered lacing. Head is very fully and creamy. Looks very nice.

S - The smell is pretty standard for the style, but still nice. Not really pulling any distinct coconut aromas from this. Mostly all milk chocolate, lactose / cream, mild toffee / marshmallow fluff, and dark barley / coffee roast. Smells nice, but it could be better.

T - Taste follows the nose - creamy milk chocolate, vanilla, cream, lactose sugars. Still not pulling any distinct coconut out of this, but it sure is delicious. Light to moderate bitterness / roast.

M - The feel is silky smooth, fluffy, and creamy. Medium bodied with excellent carbonation. A very lovely texture, and dangerously drinkable.

Overall, a delicious beer, but I clearly wouldn't know this was brewed with actual coconut without being told. As far as porters go however, the beer is delicious, and I would absolutely have this again if it was available to me. More coconut wouldn't hurt though, just sayin.

For a beer that runs over $9 for a 4 pack, i was expecting this to blow me away. It didn't.

It's about a middle of the road porter. Not much going on. Nothing there to positively distinguish itself from others in its price range.

I got Zero coconut hints, aromas, or flavor. Nothing. Zip. Zilch. Nada.

The mouthfeel is light and the flavor is very subdued in a bland way.

Not a fan, especially for the price.

Tasted On: 04-30-2014
Freshness: Canned 12-09-2013
Packaging: 12 oz. can
Glassware: Mug
Purchased: Single from Let's Pour mailorder

Black and opaque beer, capped with 2 fingers of tan head. Lacing and head retention are fair.

The nose has sweet, chocolate maltiness — toasted malts and milk chocolate. I also get some coconut but not a lot.

The taste is overall sweet, but not cloying. Flavors include roasted malts, chocolate, and a little coconut. There's also an earthy hop component, but there's hardly any bitterness at all. Very pleasant tasting overall

Mouthfeel has low carbonation and a medium body. The finish leaves you with sweetness of malts and chocolate.

Overall a delicious porter from Maui Brewing

Can poured into stone glass.

Pours a nice deep black with hints of very dark red. Nose has some roast and chocolate, not much coconut. Taste has slight coconut, mainly roast and a cream sensation similar to a milk stout with slight bitter chocolate. Reminds me of a good milk stout and/but certainly quite delicious for a porter.
