I don't know what everyone else was drinking. But this beer tastes like vomit, and smells like it too. The malt and hop aroma that may be there are masked by a pungent aroma of puked pineapple. The head was great and the beer looked stellar. But every time I brought the beer close to my face I triggered my gag reflex. This beer could possibly drive me back to watered down lager style beers. They never let you down like this.

So happy to see this brewery's offerings on the mainland after discovering them a couple summers ago while on vacation in Maui. I had their lager and coconut porter while I was there and I loved them.

This one? Not so much. Beer pours a cloudy copper color, thin head that dissipates quickly. Notes of pineapple, wheat, malt on the nose. Some unpleasant muskiness, too. Taste is rather flat and uninspiring. Honestly, it reminded me on some of my earliest efforts at homebrewing, using homebrew kits instead of fresh ingredients.

Mouthfeel is thin and watery, some brackish aftertaste. Won't be back to this one.

Wheat beer made with pineapple juice.

A clear light orange with no head, even with a swirl. Looks a bit more like orange Kool Aid than beer with no head and no lacing whatsoever.

Nose is very sweet but not with the pineapple you expect; much more like Belgian candi sugar.

Mouthfeel is thin and watery and without much going for it. Light carbonation probably actually helps this one.

Flavors are simple and lacking in any complexities or character. Flavors are like a weak and simple Belgian with lots of candi sugar but with no real flavor or character - just sort of a simple light/medium sweet. No depth at all. Flavor is weak orange, maybe a hint of weak tangerine. One searches for a pineapple hint only because it's supposed to be there. I found a very light undertone of pineapple and simple sugar in the finish but only because I think I was looking for it. It may not even really exist. This one, in summary, sort of tastes like weak soda pop.

This is one I would pass on. Really not even worth the taste from my point of view.

Pours a nice hazy orange with a big, light white head.

Smells of astringent hops, slight metallic smell (from the water profile), a little bit of fruit comes to in at the end.

Tastes slightly sweet with some subtle fruit flavor. Not a lot going on in the taste. In fact, it's a bit boozy up front, which given the alcohol is odd.

The mouthfeel is OK. It is watery, which could make for a good summer beer had the flavor had more going on.

Hmmm, there just isn't much going on in this beer, and the up-front smell and flavor is not pleasant.

Poured into a nonic.

Cloudy golden color with about two finger of wheat head. Great retention and lacing. Looks pretty exceptional.

Smells of some hearty wheat , some bready yeast, but these scents are overshadowed by the aroma of pineapple juice.

Just straight up pineapple juice followed by some hearty wheat and bready yeast.

On the sweet side, but other than that pretty typical of the style. Nicely carbonated, smooth and creamy.

Who put pineapple in my hefe??? Ok, so I clearly knew there was gonna be pineapple in this, and that's why I wanted to try it. The pineapple, however, completely overshadows everything else in this beer. Couldn't drink more than one.

Look: Golden Yellow with a 1 finger head and no retention and lots of carbonation bubbles

Smell: Wheat and pineapple not much more

Taste: Holy pineapple Batman this almost taste like pineapple juice with a hint of pineapple

Mouthfeel: Light and refreshing with a medium carbonation feel

Overall: Not for me but if you love fruit in your beer than this is definately for you.

Pours out a thickly hazed golden color liquid. Some mildly white head. Seems cloudier and thicker-looking than most wheats. Not a great look. Smell is heavy on sweet citrus pineapple, one dimensional and almost no wheat malt to be found. Overpowered by the strength of the pineapple juice. Taste, too, is overwhelmed by the initial burst of pineapple juice. Almost all other wheat beer traits are lost underneath the overwhelming citusy, punch-like taste. If they were trying to make a sweet beer, it's not sweet enough. If they were trying to make a balanced wheat beer, it's too sweet. This beer just can't find it's center. Finishes with a mildly cloying sweet but watery finish. A little dry on the palette. Other than that, all I can taste is pineapple juice. No soft wheat malt, not hops whatsoever, which might have complimented the citrus nature of this beer well. Mouthfeel is fairly well bodied and structured.

Overall, this beer needs to be taken back to the drawing board. A good idea that just doesn't pan out.

Purchased at Gravity beer market, Oly, WA.
poured from the can into my New Belgium globe

pours a cloudy, dark orange. medium head, low retention. lacing dissipates quickly. smell is of wheat, yeast, and a sour, citrus. Takes a moment to settle in the mouth and get the flavor past all the small bubbles. Sour, wheat, yeast...same as the smell.
interesting beer, just not for me.

Note: I originally reviewed this under Maui Brewing Co. (Brewpub) - oops. This is copied from there.

Cheers to Goblinmunkey7 and his mother for this can

Consumed 12/30/11

Appearance: Hazy, cloudy golden orange color - a somewhat large head with some foamy, sticky lacing

Smell: Kind of smells like a weird trail mix - the pineapple really is the most prominent aroma - and it's not like a juicy, tropical pineapple-like aroma (due to hops), but rather like dry, sugary pineapple slices or pineapple candy - very strange - aside from that, there are pale malts, wheat, some spices (clove), banana peels

Taste: Slightly less weird than the smell, but not good - tons of dry pineapple - very sweet, but the pineapple flavor almost makes me feel like this should be sweeter and juicer - some spices, particularly clove - some other weird fruit flavors, including banana and tart apple - some serious wheat - there are a lot of strong flavors here, and they don't entirely work together

Mouthfeel: Medium body, sticky, needs to be crisper

Overall: Well, at least the can is cool-looking

Ultimately, I can't say a lot of nice things about this beer. It's a sub-par wheat ale with an excessive amount of dried-out, sticky pineapples thrown in the mix. I wouldn't recommend this. I'm not even sure if I would drink it again.

Poured from the can resulting in a billowing fluffy off-white head reaching 2 and a half fingers high over a maui gold pineapple body, slightly hazy. Pretty good retention with tall clouds of lacing on the sides.

Bready malts and cereal grains combine with a wheat and overripe pineapple and soap to make the body of the aroma. Slightly grassy as well though I really didn't expect much of a hop profile.

Not what I took away from the smell at all. Malt backbone is very reserved cereal grains primarily, very weak with a slight wheat twang. Belgian white character with pleasant spices clove in particular and yeast, pineapple flavor from the aroma is completely lost. Finishes absolutely soapy and somewhat metallic.

Average body and carbonation with a smooth drink but finishes drying on top of the soap not very crisp.

Interesting concept to make a exotic wheat wit hybrid with tropical flare, I think they went a bit too overboard with the spice and yeast and much of the fruit flavor was lost, resulting in a really soapy finish. Was expecting more from this.

Canned 03/2011

A: copper ale with near opaqueness - uber hazy. 1-2 finger peanut head which is loosely packed. Falls to a thick quilt of the same.

S: Clove, belgian-esque wheat smell. Sweet and airy. The pineapple is subdued and adds a hint of savory sweetness. The yeast owns this though.

T: Hmm, the thing I first notice is that the beer is middle of the road for wheat PA's, but the beer has a weird burnt match flavor at the end. Not so much so that it is offensive, but quirky nonetheless. The yeast continues to dominate the beer. The pineapple, again, is subdued and actually adds (IMO) a metallic finish.

M: Medium body with moderate carbonation. Dries the palate, but in a waxy way - smooth.

O: Well, interesting take on the AWPA, but not really up my alley. The yeast overwhelms the novelty ingredient of the beer. Likely would have been better off in a lower wheat proportionate grain bill, lower SRM and body.

Poured from a can into a straight-side pilsner glass.

A - Pours a hazy tan/burnt-orange gold. 8-10 streams of carbonation bubbles and a light golden cream-colored almost-foamy head of one finger that stuck around. Quite a bit of lace.

S - Pineapple right off the bat, but subdued like you'd find in a trail mix, not like a fresh wedge. Followed by a wheaty/grassy note and evidence of malt.

T - Immediate candied pineapple flavor which dominates most of the way through, not bright and tangy, but sweet and lackluster. A bit of wheaty flavor to finish, and the flavor of aluminum can through the whole experience.

M - Light-medium body, medium carbonation, but that tinny/twangy feeling I used to get when drinking pineapple juice right out of the Dole can.

D - It's moderately crisp, and a good sweet niche beer. I'm very glad I tried it, but I probably won't be trying this out of a can again. My curiosity was satisfied, but I was disappointed.

I wonder how different it would be on draught at the brewpub, with a plate of beer-fried brie in front of me...

A - Generally golden, shifting between pineapple-gold and tangerine depending on the light. Neither satisfyingly cloudy nor crisply clear. Muddled rather than muddied.

S - You can definitely catch wafts of pineapple here. Being kind, the wheat notes are subtle; being unkind they are tame.

T - Disappointingly, I couldn't really taste the pineapple at all. Most of the wheat beer I've had has been German and while it may be unfair to hold american wheat ales against this yard-stick, this beer REALLY doesn't measure up. Little to no yeast, no citrus, tastes more like a lager than a wheat beer. For me this beer can't make up its mind as to whether it's a lager or a wheat beer. This does not produce some sort of groundbreaking fusion style; it creates identity confusion.

M - Timid, thin and fizzy.

O - Had quite high hopes for this beer which partly explains my slightly scathing review. The lack of pineapple on the palate was a missed opportunity and overall this beer did very little for me. I think the explanation for this lies in my expectation of a beer which would have fruity and wheaty characteristics. If you go into it expecting a slightly wheaty lager with pineapple in the nose you might not be as disappointed. Forgettable yet drinkable.

Many thanks to beerbatvocate for throwing this my way.

A - Very light translucent straw colored with a tiny white head that stays up for about 30 seconds before it dissapears. Just a few bubbles on top with almost zero lacing.

S - Heavily spiced; coriander, clove, nutmeg with a tiny bit of banana and grassy funk.

T - I'm getting a ton of pineapple juice and yeast with an assload of coriander, clove and orange peel. The pineapple juice tastes like it's from a can that may have begun to rust and dominates. Not enjoying this a whole lot.

M - crisp and refreshing

O - Overall pretty meh. The artificial tasting pineapple juice gets old quick and is pretty distracting. I'd be really unhappy if I had another 5 of these to finish. I think this might be really good in a smoothie, if you're into drinking smoothies.

P: 12oz can into a perfect pint glass.

A: The beer pours a cloudy golden yellow with a creamy white head. Lacing is sparse.

S: There's a hint of spicy wheat aroma, in the realm of clove with some tropical fruit.

T: Malty grain with a tropical fruit finish. Low bitterness with no apparent hop flavors. Flavors have a sharp cut off with no lingering aftertaste. The balance of sweet and bitter is pretty good but the overall flavors are underwhelming.

M: On the thin side. Carbonation is low to moderate and the bubbles are tiny. Unimpressive for a wheat beer.

O: Not a bad beer but you'll forget about it rather quickly. It's just too light in terms of flavor and body to leave any sort of impression. There are a number of other wheat beers I'd rather drink than this one.

Poured a pale hazy yellow. Medium head with a good amount of lacing on the glass

Smells is very faont, hard to pick up much of anything on the nose.

Tastes of slight banana, and pineapple? Wheat taste is evident.

Mouthfeel is thick and substantial, like a good wheat be should be.

Overall a nice wheat beer. Would be good for the summer around the pool. Not stellar.

Pours an almost opaque cloudy gold-orange with a huge off-white head. Head has many different size bubbles from mousse to rocky. Aroma is Wheaties in unsweetened pineapple juice plus some sharp clove from the yeast. Taste is flat, a little cardboardy, but goes down easy. The little bit of pineapple in the taste needs some sweetness or maybe just more of the flavor or added carbonation. From the appearance I expected this to be more like a hefeweizen but there is none of the zip of a good hefe. This might be a decent beach beer (especially considering the can) or might be paired with a pineapple burger to effect.

A: Pours a slightly hazy golden with some orange highlights, capped by two fingers of white head. Retention can't even really be called poor, as the head almost immediately dissipates and doesn't even leave any lacing in its wake.

S: Wheat up front with bananas and strong cloves, along with some light pineapple sweetness. There's also a light smokey note swirling around that is a bit of a distraction.

T: The taste mostly follows the nose, but thankfully doesn't include the odd smokey character. Wheat base with bananas and a better defined, slightly juicier pineapple character. Cloves are dialed way back. The pineapple character could be a bit stronger, it's there but rather muted.

M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation, feels too heavy for the style.

D: Certainly not difficult to drink, but the smoke on the nose is a negative, and it's not really good enough to want more than one.

Appearance - Medium golden beer with an exploding creamy head. A hazey glow appears middle of the glass. The head shrinks to about a 1/2 inch.
Smell - Big time pineapple and general sweetness.
Taste - Refreshing pineapple flavors burst at the beginning flowed by an assortive but by no means over barring hop presnse that leads to a clean yet fruity finish led by hints of banana notes. There is a slight stale, fermented fruit taste present.
Mouthfeel - Feels like juice when you're drinking it. I wish the carbonation stayed with the beer longer. Could use more bite but would make a great summer time pool beer.

Appearance: Hazy orange. Head is bright-white, fluffy, and sticks to the glass. Decent head retention leaves a thin cap that lasts for the duration. Carbonation looks to be on point.

Smell: Pineapple juice. Faint tang of wheat. Citrusy and a little grassy. Pineapple juice dominates. Luckily, it smells like fresh pineapple juice and not the stuff in a can. yeast makes itself know and helps to offer some balance to the sweetness of the juice. Grainy.

Taste: Pineapple juice layered over a yeasty wheaty body. Bready at times. Grassy. Some toasted malts? Nicely balanced, but the pineapple juice starts to take over after a few sips. Some biscuity notes as well.

Mouthfeel: Light bodied. Carbonation is on the higher side of moderate, but works to quell some of the sweetness. A touch dry. Drinks relatively smooth.

Overall: Not bad, but not great either. It's a nice take on the wheat beer, but the pineapple dominates in the long run and loses some of the more subtle flavor profiles.

Appearance - Pours a cloudy, mellow, dirty orange with a white finger width head that fizzes away like soda, leaving nothing but traces of bubbles clinging to the sides of the glass.

Smell - A very simple, clean aroma of wheat and pineapple sweetness.

Taste - Largely a wheat taste with faint notes of pineapple sweetness rounding out the profile. Simple, straight-forward flavor. There's absolutely nothing else to it.

Mouthfeel - Light in body with fizzy carbonation. Easy drinking.

Overall - Pretty average APWA. Simple, two note flavor. Fizzy. Fairly hefty price tag. Not a good combination. Good summer brew, but there are considerably better options at half the cost. Needless to say, I won't be buying this again.

Medium sized couple fingers white to off white head settles into a decent lacing above a cloudy pale yellowish golden colored beer.

Wheat, light spices, malted grains, and I think oranges aroma.

Washed out grain malt taste with some light fruit, oranges, and even lighter spices.

A lightly dryish aftertaste on this light bodied beer.

A very light tasting beer, not much to write home about unless you need a lighter beer to cool off with after running a marathon or something.

12oz can poured into a pint glass. from notes

A - Pours a nice yellow-orange with fluffy, bubbly white head. Lots of carbonation

S - Citric aromas (pineapple, banana, oranges). Some bready yeast

T - Very strong pineapple juice. Oranges, lemons, grass. The yeast provides a bready/doughy flavour to it that doesn't mesh well with the strong citric presence.

M - Effervescent, light

O - This would be an okay beer for sitting poolside but it just wasn't really my thing. I'd like it better if the pineapple was integrated a bit better and not just taste like a can of juice was poured in. Not too bad, not too great; average.

Pours an almost murky orange yellow color. Decent white head with pretty good retention. Strong banana aroma with some spiciness and a bit of citrus aroma. Banana aroma reminds me of dried banana chips. The pineapple flavor is relegated to the background, this is not an over the top fruity beer, which I appreciate, but actually I would like to see a bit more of the pineapple in this one. The banana flavor actually takes first billing, which is a bit surprising.

I remember having this beer on tap at Stone's 13th Anniversary and thought it was really great, so I couldn't wait to crack open a can.

A: The pour is a hazy golden color with a sort of short lived white head.

S: The nose is sweet wheat and malt with some light fruitiness to it, but nothing inherently "pineappley" about it. A bit of banana and clove, too.

T: Sweet wheat with a bit of a honey flavor and some fruit juice sort of notes. Again, some hints of banana, spice, and yeast, but not really any pineapple.

M: The body is light and there's a somewhat watery feel to this beer overall. The carbonation is light to medium.

D: I was disappointed by this one. Perhaps it's a beer that fairs better being freshly kegged, because it was nothing like what I remember having.
