12oz can. Actually made with local Maui pineapples. Huh - damned near every other beer I've tried on the islands evokes direct associations to this native fruit - and these guys are adding the real McCoy right to the brew - bring it on.

This beer pours a very cloudy golden yellow hue, with a teeming tower of thin, fibrous foamy white head, which leaves some randomly strewn soap scum lace around the glass as it soon collapses under its own aspirations.

It smells of edgy wheat grain, some prominent banana chip esters, some weakly sassy pineapple fruitiness, a softly acrid yeast, and subtle leafy, citric hops. The taste is more moderated, but still crisp, white wheat graininess, a more pineapple-dominated fruitiness - though I'd still like a fair bit more of the proclaimed guest ingredient to shine through - and ethereal yeast and leafy hops notes that seem to come and go at will.

The bubbles are pretty sedate, the body a rather steady medium weight for the style, and agreeably smooth. It finishes off-dry, the sweetness of the wheat and fruit holding on with little effort, as the herbal hops and leftover yeast don't seem capable of any serious rejoinder.

A pretty darned drinkable example of the style, twisted and a tad mutated for the remote island ethos - for the better, I must declare. This little fruit experiment is cute, as it just adds to an already capable underlying wheat ale.

12oz can into weizen glass. canned on 09/08/11... probably should have checked the bottom of the can before purchasing. too late now.

A: a hazed orange body is actually pretty bright. head consists of thick white bubbles and has good retention. mild thick lacing.

S: boatloads of banana. a healthy dose of wheat as well. pineapple. a lot of tropical, pleasant fruit aromas.

T: pineapple. bananas. not really a clove flavor, but much more of the first two. almost reminds me of drinking a pina colada or some other tropical cocktail.

M: subtle carbonation on a light body.

D: for a brew that probably should have been taken off the shelf, this is pretty tasty. definitely worth picking up if you dig the wheat brews.

Golden, hazy wheat look. Decent 1+ finger head with minimal lacing and retention. Smell is that of most wheats with a bit more fruit on this one. Taste follows the nose with a very fruity taste and this I attribute to the strong pineapple forward character. Nothing complex, but fairly refreshing. Mouthfeel is more like a juice than a beer. I feel that they went a little overboard on the fruit character, but I wouldn't turn one down. A simple wheat that is a bit of a one trick pony. Not sure I could drink more than one or two of these. A unique twist on a style that was a bit too fruity-

A: A hazy golden color, caracteristic of many wheat beers.

S: a very classic weizen yeast aroma, with a twist and hint of pinapple and a bit of orange!

T: a very acidic taste due to the pinaple juice overpowering the wheat.

M: Medium body

O: a very refreshing beer, probably very good to enjoy at the beach!

Poured from can to a NBB globe. No date on the can.

A - The beer pours an amber brown color with a nice 2 finger white/tan head with good retention and nice lacing.

S - An interesting aroma of the hefeweizen yeast along with a fruity pineapple, banana, citrus character. Not what I'd expect from a hefeweizen but that's ok.

T - The beer starts with a light crisp wheat malt flavor. The yeast comes into play and provides the hefeweizen flavors with a stronger banana than found in the nose, a bit of clove. The fruit really comes through with pineapple, banana, apple tones. A mild bitterness throughout. Finishes crisp.

M - Light bodied and well carbonated. A little dry.

O - An interesting take on the style. I remember when we were in Maui last year my wife picked up a sixer of this and she really enjoyed it. I found myself enjoying this time around, too. Certainly a beer we'd buy again.

12 oz can into a tall pilsner glass. Looks like it was canned on 01/07/12. Thanks to wmcconvi for the extra!

A - Opaque dark yellow body. Large fluffy whit head. Actually looks like a glass of pulpy pineapple juice.

S - Wheat and a hint of Belgian yeast and spice. Really sweet pineapple aroma.

T - Wheat and subdued pineapple. A bit of biscuity malt and yeast makes this taste like a pineapple upside down cake. I could use a bit more pineapple though. Clean finish. Damn this is tasty stuff. Mouth feel comes off a bit syrupy with high carbonation.

O - This beer is awesome! The pineapple really works well with the wheat ale. Simple concept executed very well.

12oz can, canned on 6/29/11
DFH signature glass

A: Pours a light hazy yellow orange color. Three fingers of big bubbled bright white head. Tons of carbonation streaming off the bottom of the glass.

S: It's an older beer, too old to be being sold but it still smells pretty clean and good. It smells of sweet pineapple fruit. Sweet wheat malt too.

T: It's very carbonated. Almost overly. I really can't complain about about this one, it's old yes but the flavors are still there. It's a solid wheat minus the Belgian yeast strains. You still get some of that pineapple flavor which is really pleasant. Dry close.

M: Medium bodied.

Welcome to DC Maui Brewing Company!

Wheat beer with pineapple juice huh? Gimme!

Served in a tulip.

A: Poured a bright, bright orange color, with a very tropical flair visually. The uniformly cloudy brew boast about a finger or so white head that retained itself throughout the session.

S: I know this was supposed to be pineapple based, but I got more mango husk than anything. Also, I got a great deal of rose petal in there as well.

T: While I enjoyed this, I thought it seemed a tad watered down. It was almost as if somewhere there once existed a more concentrated version of this, but then someone diluted it. Still though, the wheat was there and so was the tropical goodness. One dimensional, yet effective.

M: Spritzy enough and comforting to the palate, with the fruit playing a nice duet with the wheat. I actually could have used a tinge more sweetness... but that's just me.

O: I think I had tons more affection for this brew than just about everyone else who has reviewed it so far, and that's totally cool. I dug the fresh fruit and the light body. I could pop a few of these around the pool in the summertime.

Note: I originally reviewed this under Maui Brewing Co. (Brewpub) - oops. This is copied from there.

Cheers to Goblinmunkey7 and his mother for this can

Consumed 12/30/11

Appearance: Hazy, cloudy golden orange color - a somewhat large head with some foamy, sticky lacing

Smell: Kind of smells like a weird trail mix - the pineapple really is the most prominent aroma - and it's not like a juicy, tropical pineapple-like aroma (due to hops), but rather like dry, sugary pineapple slices or pineapple candy - very strange - aside from that, there are pale malts, wheat, some spices (clove), banana peels

Taste: Slightly less weird than the smell, but not good - tons of dry pineapple - very sweet, but the pineapple flavor almost makes me feel like this should be sweeter and juicer - some spices, particularly clove - some other weird fruit flavors, including banana and tart apple - some serious wheat - there are a lot of strong flavors here, and they don't entirely work together

Mouthfeel: Medium body, sticky, needs to be crisper

Overall: Well, at least the can is cool-looking

Ultimately, I can't say a lot of nice things about this beer. It's a sub-par wheat ale with an excessive amount of dried-out, sticky pineapples thrown in the mix. I wouldn't recommend this. I'm not even sure if I would drink it again.

Appearance: Hazy orange. Head is bright-white, fluffy, and sticks to the glass. Decent head retention leaves a thin cap that lasts for the duration. Carbonation looks to be on point.

Smell: Pineapple juice. Faint tang of wheat. Citrusy and a little grassy. Pineapple juice dominates. Luckily, it smells like fresh pineapple juice and not the stuff in a can. yeast makes itself know and helps to offer some balance to the sweetness of the juice. Grainy.

Taste: Pineapple juice layered over a yeasty wheaty body. Bready at times. Grassy. Some toasted malts? Nicely balanced, but the pineapple juice starts to take over after a few sips. Some biscuity notes as well.

Mouthfeel: Light bodied. Carbonation is on the higher side of moderate, but works to quell some of the sweetness. A touch dry. Drinks relatively smooth.

Overall: Not bad, but not great either. It's a nice take on the wheat beer, but the pineapple dominates in the long run and loses some of the more subtle flavor profiles.
