12 oz can. Pours inky black with a medium pillowy brown head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is subdued - sweet and roasty chocolate malts and grains with some cinnamon.

The flavor is very off - cardboardy, mineral, vegetal malts with some roast and a hint of cinnamon and peppers. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and very watery.

Overall, I don't know if I got a bad sample, but this was subdued and off. I really like the chocolate chili beers, but this didn't have much to it.

2012 edition, 12 oz can, poured into a pint glass.

Appearance: Pours a beautiful, completely opaque, pitch-black color, with a quarter of a finger of caramel-colored head that quickly dissolved into a halo of foam that gripped the sides of the glass and formed a rather large cloud that gathered atop the beer.

Aroma: Wow! Very aromatic! Massive aromas of chocolate up front, followed by some roasted malt and caramel. Think chocolate French toast.

Taste: Wow! Lots of chocolate, no massive amounts of chocolate up front, imparting a slight bitterness, but nothing unpleasant. Next comes tons of roasted malt, some brown sugar-like sweetness, and a hit of coffee. Unfortunately, this beer is a couple of years old, and as such, most, if not all of the chipotle has faded. Regardless, it’s still a fantastic beer!

Mouthfeel: Slightly chewy and extremely smooth as there is no carbonation what-so-ever. With an ABV of 7%, there is no presence of alcohol on the palate.

Overall: I thought that this, even a few years old, and devoid of any chipotle flavor, is an excellent beer. I need to taste a fresh one to see what the chipotle adds!

A- Pours black with just a hint of light brown light seeping through the edges, fizzy dark tan head eventually disappears, leaving just a ring around the edges

S- lightly smoked roasted malt with a whiff of chocolate, slightly spicy with some peppery notes, some dry ash on the backend

T- smoky and ashy malt flavors up front eventually give way to some light chocolate notes. There are some spicy notes mid-palate, but can't pick out any cinnamon, slightly earthy and tangy notes are also noticed, typical of belgian style. The finish is dry and roast with just a trace of heat from the peppers.

M- medium-light body with high carbonation leads to a foamy mouthfeel and finish, abv is is hidden quite well

0- this one was pretty good, I would have preferred more of an emphasis on the cinnamon and pepper. Worth a try but not the price

Another beer courtesy of the legendary woodychandler. Poured from a 12 oz. can. Has a black color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of chocolate, some spices. Taste is chocolate, some smokiness, a bit of spices, mild and easy drinking. Feels full bodied in the mouth and overall is a bit different and a solid beer.

Poured from the can into a snifter glass.

A mocha foamy head that makes about slightly more than a finger tall, settles and leaves a good collar of about 3mm. Very dark walnut black body, can hardly see through this at all. Pretty solid looking stout.

On the bouquet there is a little bit of roast character, with some dark chewy bread and sense of dark bakers chocolate. Not particularly spice as hinted from the ingredients and can listing. Still an interesting nose.

Palate is a little bit thin even to style. Roast character melds fine on the palate, but finishes a bit wet. Aftertaste is virtually un-noticeable. No sense of spices, chocolate that was hinted on the nose. I wish I could say more about the palate, but there's not much going on here.

Overall it's not a terrible beer, but for all the incredible spice and flavors it mentions it really doesn't come out to play. As for Belgian that's even a bigger surprise cause this hardly feels anything Belgian stout like at all (See de-Struise for Damnation III for a good one). This just feels like a standard roasty stout and one I could skip.

12oz can picked up at Bier Thirty in Bown over the weekend... Surprised to be the first review here. Poured into my HotD goblet.

1/2" dark brown head dies back very quickly leaving little in the way of a head or a cap... the brew is black.

The nose is pretty full.. dark chocolate, light roast malt, some lesser cinnamon and something that I guess is chipotle.. slightly smokey and possibly chili'eque.

Not much in the way of any thing contributed from any Belgian yeast... a bit of clovey phenols, but I could be confusing that for the cinnamon.. Dark malt/chocolate deliver the main palate punch... cinnamon is fighting to stay afloat, the chipotle has an even more difficult time.. the chili only shows a a minor smokiness.

Body is a medium/light with a light carbonation and a light carbonation... sorta silky on the palate...

Despite my above negatives, this is a pretty decent beer... It just needs more of everything in the aroma and flavor to take it to the next level.

Poured into an Elysian snifter. Pours a very dark brown, appearing black in the glass. Two finger, coarse light brown head that dissipated over a few minutes to a thick film and ring around the glass and spotty lacing. Aroma of chocolate, toasted malt, cinnamon, lightly peppery and quite spicy. Flavor is more subdued, mild toasted malt with hints of smoke, light Mexican chocolate, coffee and light fruit. Finish is very subdued, but as the flavors taper off, the background chipotle becomes detectable, giving an otherwise tame finish a bit of interest. Light to medium bodied, somewhat surprising for the darkness and aroma. A mild dark ale more closely resembling a light Belgian stout crossed with a dry porter. Interesting, but not very assertive.

I'll start by saying I'm a huge fan of MBC. With that out of the way...this seasonal offering was not up to standard.

Pours black with a two-finger light brown he3ad that dissipates rather quickly.

Aroma of roasted malts, pepper, clove. Some other stuff going on here that I can't quite figure out.

Taste is roasted malts, clove, cinnamon and chocolate. There is also a certain mustiness that is not particular attractive.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and slightly lifeless.

Overall, I'm underwhelmed. Not a particularly focused brew. Better luck next time MBC....

App: Dark cola brown that allows no light to pass through. Almost black. Thick, dark head dissipates quickly leaving no lacing. Lackluster retention for a stout.
Smell: Carob like roasted nose. Different from chocolate. Toasted almonds, fruit cake. Bourbon like spiciness. Underlying herbal spiciness that isn't easy to pin down. Slightly medicinal.
Taste: Not as strong in flavor as I was expecting from a “belgian stout”. Has almost none of the pungency I associate with belgian styles. Woody and dark, chocolate a good compliment to the maltiness, but it tastes a little off. Tastes more like Carob. Could be really good, but falls a little short. Slight lingering coco taste. Not bad.
Mouth: Medium bodied, smooth with light carbonation. Pretty easy to drink. Carbonated enough to roll the flavors but not flat or too effervescent.

12 oz can from "Lifesource" Salem. $2.49 Wonderful looking beer poured into my PBR goblet!. Black as night with a thick tan head creamy goodness. Cocoa,burnt malts and caramel nose..pleasing. Taste is semi dark chocolate, slightly smokey,roasted nuts and oats and a faint hot pepper..excellent stuff. Great palate..keeps my taste buds tingling and guessing! I really liked this one. I have had only 2 beers from this brewer and loved them both. Must try more.

Body is deep, dark brown with maybe a hint of ruby highlights. No head to speak of.

Nose is is sweet, musty, bitter chocolate.

Flavor seems muted compared to the various items mentioned on the label. Bitter chocolate stout is what I get. No pepper heat, and I am really missing it.

Mouthfeel is medium. Just that...

Overall it is OK. I thought I was grabbing a Big Swell IPA when I dragged it from the fridge. Wish I had been.

The CANorado trip is winding down but not before I scored a CAN from Hawaii!

The Crack revealed another brimful CAN and I started with an aggro Glug but the dense, deep-brown head was forming too quickly for me to CANtinue. It evinced a nice pseudo-cascading action before settling into a deep, dark brown liquid with limited light penetration except at the edges, where ruby highlights could be seen. SRM = 44. Nose reminded me of MexiCAN hot chocolate, which is also heavily spiced. I definitely got the chocolate and the clove and cinnamon intermingled so seamlessly that it was hard for me to differentiate the two. Mouthfeel was big and thick and with the flavor profile, I felt as though I were drinking a chocolate milkshake, albeit a spicy one. Finish was quite spicy, initially, and then the chocolate came back for a repeat appearance. Quite a beer, but probably more appropriate for cooler months. Not one for the summer cooler, but definitely a Hula in the Coola Day (02 Feb, annually) CANdidate.

Poured from a 12 oz can into a "pint" glass. Pours pitch black with a tiny light brown head. Smells of chocolate and berries, nice aroma. Tastes of chocolate and coffee, dark goodness. Beer is light bodied, decent carbonation. Overall, a good beer.

Can on Kauai.

Pours a deep brown color with a nice tan head that faded away to not much of anything.

Aromas are of bakers chocolate, cocoa, and espresso. Subtle, but still nice.

Taste is of chocolate, light spices, brewed coffee, and cream. Finish has really a real subtle Belgian yeast flavor, and some light chipotle. Nice flavors.

Mouthfeel is good, nice body, with nice carbonation. Soft and not heavy.

Overall, an interesting and tasty stout.

Love Maui's cans; the feel in your hand is great. "Belgian Stout Brewed with Chocolate and Spices." 7% ABV confirmed. 355ml aluminum can served into a conical Samuel Smith's pint glass in me gaff in low altitude Los Feliz, Los Angeles, California. Reviewed live. Expectations are above average; current ratings are mediocre but I usually like Maui's beers.

Served straight from the fridge. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

A: Pours a four finger rich gorgeous tan colour head of great cream, good thickness, and good retention (6+ minutes) for the high ABV. Body colour is a dark solid nontransparent opaque black; no yeast particles are visible. No bubble show. Carbonation appears adequate. Light lacing sticks to the sides of the glass as the head recedes. Looking pretty solid for a stout; it's not unique or special per se, but I do like the head. No overt flaws.

Sm: Cinnamon, cocao powder, dark malts, chocolate malts, pepper spices, and brown sugar. An above average strength aroma.

T: Hm. Underwhelmingly executed bland chocolate is prominent. Dark malts. Mediocre cinnamon. Belgian yeast. A hint of pepper when I really look for it; it's rather buried and adds little to the flavour. Imbalanced, shallow, and weak. Bland overall; there's little flavour here and what few notes there are lack depth. It's not bad, per se - just bland and boring. Light cream. Meh.

Mf: Weak, thin, lightly watery, and even a biteen undercarbonated. Doesn't suit the flavour profile all that well. Smooth and wet throughout. In serious need of work; there's hardly any body here at all.

Dr: Drinkable but forgettable. Rather pedestrian stuff. I definitely wouldn't get it again, and it's not worth seeking out. A disappointment from Maui. I guess it's priced decently. Stout lovers should look elsewhere; this one isn't a winner. Hides its ABV well.

What the heck is this? There is plenty of chocolate and what at first tastes like coffee, and then boysenberry pancake syrup with some spicy heat. Now that I read the fine print on the can, I see chipotle peppers and cinnamon which seems to nail it.

The smell is a little repellant, though whether it's spoiled fruit of bad coffee is hard to tell. Once past that, the black and oily consistency greets the lips. Moderately spritzy. I don't know why they like to call this a Belgian stout. If you really, really like chocolate beers, you'll have to try this.

I wish they would just systematically work their way through the tropical fruits, like the Hawaiian Sun canned sodas, and find a few that work. From the 12 oz can purchased at Bottlecraft in San Diego.

appearance- pours a hazy dark brown with a huge dark brown head

aroma- dusty chocolate a little bit of cola/dr. pepper smell

taste. its chocolate porter or stoutish at first but the lingering esthers would suggest its kind of belgian style. i dont know that I taste the chipotle like I do in the stone offereing but there is a subtle smokyness. The pepper and cinnamon really start to come out as the beer warms up.

Mouthfeel- medium to full bodied. tasty and slightly warming.

Overall an excellent and unique offering, for my money though you cant beat the cococnut porter and the one they make with pineapple juice. both make me wantto put my toes in the sand and both make me want to consume sea meat by the truck load. ahhh aloha

Pours dark brown with light mocha sheet. Smells of chocolate, clove, burnt popcorn, little bit of cinnamon and vanilla. Taste is cocoa, toasted malts, some vanilla, some corn, a little astringent. Full bodied with light carb and an off-dry finish. Not impressed whatsoever, lately their beers are more and more easily passed by. The only thing keeping me coming back is I've had all their offerings except the wit, which I think I will remedy. Not sure I've had all the beer from any other brewery not local to me.

Opaque black with ruby highlights and a tan head. Soft smell of roasted malts and a touch of pepper. Poured into a Hardywood snifter.

Chocolate notes predominate. Bitter chocolate finish. Not really finding the nuance of cinnamon or peppers or any spice for that matter. As it warms more, I get a tiny note of some heat, but not anything substantial enough to take note.

If I was tasting this blindly, I would assume it was an American stout and would probably deem it solid. However, with the expectation of spices -- in addition to the chocolate -- I'm a bit let down. This is a conundrum for evaluating the taste component of the beer: do I say good and go 3.00 or above or do I judge it for what it is suppose to be and evaluate a lower score because it misses the mark? And for close to $4 a can, I can get beers of equal or better quality for much less.

Overall mouthfeel is decent for style. Medium to medium-heavy bodied with appropriate carbonation. Maybe a touch more carbonation would bring some of these other notes to life? Just searching for why I am missing the boat on the hard efforts of what is normally a high-quality brewer.

Great idea and, what I ascertain is that this is maybe better fresh from the brewery. I'm not in Hawaii often (imagine that!) so that might be hard to accomplish on my end.

12oz can poured into a Chimay goblet.

A: Pitch black pour. Creamy beige head takes its time,but eventually settles to a thin cap. A delicate ring of lacing circles the glass.

S: Semi sweet dark chocolate, smoke and soot, faint whiffs of black pepper, dried chilis, and cinnamon. Not much 'pop' on the nose.

T: Smoke and soot up front. Bakers chocolate. Faint cinnamon. Flash of clove and some oily hops. The chipotle contribution is very downplayed, just the slightest hint of peppery warmth on the back end. Cola. Touch of candidate sugar fruitiness. Dry chocolatey and sooty finish with the slightest hint of chipotle heat.

M: Rather thin and light. Slight creaminess, but it lands on the watery side. Gentle scrubbing carbonation.

O: About as complex as a doorknob. Adjunct contributions are weak and uninspired, yeast character is seriously lacking, and the body is too thin and watery. A lot of bells and whistles on paper, but in the end this is an exceedingly average beer. Maui needs to go bigger and bolder all around with this one.

12 oz can poured into a pint glass. Reviewed August 12, 2013 at 0222.

A: Solid mocoa 2 fingered head. The head goes down to nothing very fast. Solid black body. Lacing slides down the glass and joins the body quickly.

S: Spicy malts appear first. Smell dissipates quite quickly after the head leaves. Light dark chocolate notes are all that remain within a minute.

T: Spiciness slightly bites as an end taste. Chile style dark chocolate lingers on the tongue. Smokiness appears as the drink warms up a bit.

M: This body appears especially thick. Light to medium carbonation.

O: No real coffee notes which I kinda wanted. The taste seems a bit unbalanced. It's an easy drink style brew because one would stop caring for it quite quickly. Far from Maui's best. Alcohol is hidden nicely if that convinces one to give it a try though. This is a knock back drink with a high price.

A: Pours a dark brown with a big fluffy light brown head. Head fades VERY fast, leaving just little dots of lacing behind.

S: Smoke with a little bit of nuts and toasted malt.

T: Lots of smoke and burnt malt. A little anise. More acrid smoke in the finish. Not very pleasant either.

M: Medium body, a little drying.

O: Smoke overpowers this stout. Very little in the way of roasted malt to back it up. Kind of odd, almost more of a smoked beer than a stout I would say.

Pours an opaque black with a foamy super dark brown head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Small patches of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, cinnamon bark, and some dirty pepper aromas. Taste is much the same with cookie dough and char flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of roasty bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that has a lot going on ingredient wise but mainly comes across as charred and roasty in the aromas and flavors.

This beer looks great off the pour. Completely dark with a large brown head. Nose is roasted malts. Flavor brings a bit of the same with an almost fruity edge to things. Kind of like mellow blueberries, in a stout kind of way. Pleasant to drink and a nice stout. I like it.

Now this is an interesting fusion; Mexican-Hawaiian. Take the sort of ingredients that you would expect in a Mexican hot chocolate, and add the yeast and brewing expertise of Maui Brewing. As usual from Maui, it comes canned. On to the beer:

Ink black represents the color of this Belgian stout. Topping it off is a sopay looking head which forms an inch thick after the pour, slowly dropping to a lace. The aroma is a little dissapointing to my high expectations. There is some dark roasted malt found. Vague fruitiness too. It smells like a medicore stout, but I hope more comes through when I taste it.

First thing, spice. It wants to burn down the house, but it doesn't. The stout base is decent, and it provides a roasty canvas for the dark chocolate notes to splash onto. Bittersweet brownie mix with a faint fruitiness lingers in the aftertaste. Regarding mouthfeel, this is a medium bodied beer with peppy carbonation.

In its own, this is not a bad beer. That said, it doesn't quite meet the standard which I've come to expect from Maui Brewing.
