Pours yellow, the bright kind, 1/2" white head. Looks like a pretty beer. The aroma touched on some saison aspects, but it seemed to be pushed along moreso by the adjunct lemongrass as opposed to saison yeast pushing those feels. Sure there was clove there, but I like my saison yeast without that 'quality'.

Taste goes off the rails. Too bitter, even though the abv is 5% and well within style guidelines, but it drinks so much bigger than that. Its not really refreshing, light or any of the other qualities I seek when banging a saison. Just doesn't seem like a saison, seems more like a fruited/adjunct wheat ale. The mouth feel didn't have anything really dry, the lemongrass aspect just dominated the entire beer. Even the aspects you could still pick up on, they generally weren't very saison centric.

So much lemongrass you could think it is slightly dry or sour, but nope, that's just a lemongrass beer, heavy emphasis on lemongrass.

12 oz can from "Lifesource" in Salem OR.
$2.49
Poured into a totally inappropriate nonic pint glass.
Cloudy yellow beer with a nice sized bubbly ,yet thick white head.
Funky aroma, lemon and cheese..some barnyard, spice, slightly nutty weird but nice.
Smooth sweet lemon and slight banana tastes, also a hint of sourness, again the slight cheese..
Nice palate with a drying end.
Weird yet interesting beer.

Aroma is Belgian yeast, spices/mild vegetables and a hint of vanilla. The flavor is fruit/lemon candy, Belgian yeast, malts and a spicy/slightly tart finish.

A gold pour, mimimal head, no lacing. Aroma is of heavy malt(too much) and lemon. Taste is decent with a lemon and malt duet, but an AAL feel comes through and bashes the quality of the beer

Since I'd guess this is Maui's first Belgian to make it to the mainland, they had a good strategy to partner with one of the great American Belgian specialists, Lost Abbey.

I'm going to agree with the three longish BA reviews from my quasi-mentors. My Synthesis and annotation and adaptation to my biases are:
* Looks are no big deal. * Smells of lemongrass are strongest, but still faint.
* Taste takes on more character, but still no pizazz.
* Mouth Feel is medium to low, but carbonated enough to clean the palate for food. OK with food. Sort of half-does a saison's job. I think I'll try it with Southeast Asian food next time. Maybe spicier is better with Lemongrass. A better pairing might improve my rating.
Maui could give this more distinction, maybe most productive to work on is the yeast.
Keep at it. First time is rarely a charm.
