a barrel aged old ale, i dig that these are coming into vogue, but this one leaves just a bit to be desired for a high priced once a year release. dark dark mahogany in color, brown unless held to light for the dim red glow. the head is over an inch tall and real creamy. it smells rather simple for what it is though, malt forward, rather dense, and basically like a watered down glass of bourbon itself, so much bourbon on this that it negates in many ways a very subtle base beer. i really think the same of the taste, where there is some nice rich grainy sweet front end, from mid palate on, all i get is bourbon, vanilla and oak and booze, although the lighter texture and relative lack of viscosity for the style help it glide down with ease. carbonation is great and all, but im wishing for more beer flavor to this, its not boring or overly simplistic, it just has so much barrel on it that the beer is lost. not bad by any means, still a delectable strong ale, but for the price they fetch for this its unimpressive.

22oz into a tulip. Pours a translucent brown w/ a 1-finger khaki head.
Aroma is sweet and boozy. Brown sugar, caramel, bourbon.
Taste likewise is sweet and boozy. Brown sugar, molasses, chocolate, a touch of vanilla.
Mouthfeel is pretty heavy. Good carbonation keeps it from being syrupy.
Overall a good barrel-aged old ale, perhaps a little too sweet for me.

This is drinking really well right now. After almost a year in the cellar the vanilla flavor has really started to come out. This is much more mellow and enjoyable than I remember at the hellshire release last February. If you've been holding on to your bottles waiting for the right time to open, I wouldn't hesitate to give it a try now.
