This American Brown Ale is an Oakshire original. Dark malts combine with resinous hops in the Winter Ale to soothe your ill tempered gnome.

I was sent this by a close friend as a holiday gift. She is awesome!

Poured into a SA pint. It appears a medium woody brown with a nice tan head. No lace, but my glasses aren't anywhere near clean (thanks roomies!).

Aroma is a moderate sweetness, caramel and dark fruit, overlaid with a lively spiciness and strong hop presence. Poking around reveals a roasted character in the background.

Taste is full, nutty, and inviting. Then comes a double kick of roasted bitterness and hop bite. It lingers long, with a slight harshness.

Feel is a little thin, but nicely carbonated.

An overall nice brew. Though the harshness in the finish will keep me going out of my way for this one.

I'm not sure this qualifies as a winter warmer. Deep, dark brown color. Weak head. Strong smell of hops. Overwhelming bitter hop flavor. Negligible malt or spice. Some porter notes.

Thin looking reddish-brown pour, pale khaki head leaves a nicely laced glass. Snot machine says spice, caramel, pine. Taste buds don't dispute that. Thin, has a kind of funky finish. Probably not something I'd buy.

L: Pours a dark amber brown with a medium tan head and nice lacing g on the glass.

S: Caramel and earthy malts lead the aroma followed by a strong resinous hop.

T: A strong caramel and earthy malt then followed by a lot of resinous hops, quite hoppy for a winter warmer.

F: Medium body, smooth carbonation.

O: I'd call this more of a black IPA but it's still a solid beer.

Big pillowy head. Smell is quite hoppy; pine resin and some tropical notes, along with apple and caramel. Much more a of a roasty profile in the mouth. Big malty notes upfront, mainly burnt sugar and nuts, then fresh pine in the body that mingles with toffee and coffee hints on the finish. Feel is quite warm for something under 8%.
I think this is a great example of the style, and the balance of piney hoppy flavors with roasted malt is fantastic.

Look: Rich brown on the pour with a formidable light tan head that quickly swells to a thick pillow, slowly receding and leaving sticky lacing behind
Aroma: Freshly baked brown bread, pine, some toffee, fir needles, a little rose, earthiness, and some caramel
Taste: Resinous pine sap and rich, dark malt jump out first as some toffee, caramel, and earthiness start to work into the fold. Layer after layer of coniferous goodness piles on along with light rose-led floral notes and closes with a bite and resinous conifer
Mouthfeel: Full, medium-high carbonation, and a decent amount of dryness on the finish
Overall: This is a tasty classic. I used to drink this beer often each fall/winter but somehow got away from it in recent years so when I saw it re-packaged this year in 4-packs, it was an easy decision to pick one up. A nice hoppy brown ale with an old-school hop profile (conifer, earthy, and lightly floral) that is not only good but a welcome change-of-pace amongst spiced winter warmers or ‘winter’ IPA’s. It smells like fresh piny hops.  I can also pick up a hint of sweet hops.

I hate to say it but the taste follows the nose. So it's a not too strong piny taste. It's really fresh and just a little beery.

It's medium bodied and smooth a good amount of carbonation enhances the velvety mouthfeel because it's sudsy. It finishes with some breadwater and ends up bitter.

Overall it's a fantastic Winter Ale.  It's balanced and smooth. I give it a 4.9 out of 6.

A nice wooden barrel scent comes to the forefront at first sniff. Lots of dark goodness in here, all blended seamlessly. Pours dark brown/ruby with creamy beige head and sticky lacing. Taste is smooth, rich, slightly spicy, roast grains, toffee, peat, pipe tobacco. Nice gingerbread lingering on the palate afterwards. Really nice! 2015 re-rate: not as impressed this time around, standard English ale characteristics, just average

Aesthetically reminiscent of a hazelnut brown ale. Actually, it is an American Brown Ale! Pretty good stuff. Dark malts and resinous hops. Tastes not so subtly alcoholic.

This was poured into a mug. The appearance was a nice looking dark hazy brown color with a thin capped white foamy head that clung for a good amount of the time. The smell had a deep dark roasted brown ale - esque sort of roasted and possibly baked maltiness about it. The taste was mainly roasty and sweet with a rolling roastiness in the aftertaste and it leaves a slight dry finish. On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with a fairly decent sipping quality about it. It seems carbonated appropriately. Overall, I say this was a pretty good winter warmer leaning towards the darker side of the house.

This has always been a go to for me in the winters in the Pacific Northwest. Love the dark copper color. The smell is what the aroma of a winter warmer should be - almost a chocolate, malt, nuttiness. The taste is again what a winter warmer should aspire to be. A flavor explosion - get a lot of maltiness up front, followed by nuttiness, a little almond, chocolate, vanilla and toasted marshmallow. For as dark as it is, it almost goes down with a lager-like finish. One place to try this is the annual Holiday Ale Fest in downtown Portland which, in my opinion, is one of the best beer festivals in the country showcasing nothing but high ABV specialty ales. Cheers to the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons.
