12oz pour on tap at the Black Squirrel on 4/28/13

Near black with one finger of smooth, long lasting foam.

The aroma is a blend of pine, roast and citrus zest as well as tropical overtones. Green, green hops with a hint of chocolate. The aroma is pretty much exactly as it should be. The taste is just as well integrated and packs more intensity. Raking pine bitterness and citric accents with swirls of smooth, roasted dark malts. Roast and pine sap on the finish. An easy going medium body is augmented by resinous hops and ample carbonation.

The bitterness gets a -touch- too strong after a while but that's a minor gripe with such an excellent beer.

22oz bomber split with my brother into pint glasses.

A: Dark with red highlights; lots of light khaki head and lace.

S&T: Pine and resin, toast and burnt barley, some bood orange and citrus, rind and grapefruit, fairly bitter finish...coffee maltiness and bitterness...earthy hops, bordering on both dankness and grassiness. The deeply roasted malt character lends a nice coffee-like bitterness to the hop presence. Still fairly balanced in flavors, but moderately bitter.

MF: Medium bodied, bitter and dry.

O: A really decent Black IPA. Not overly hoppy, with a fairly dense dark malt backbone, but with plenty of bitterness and a fairly decent hop presence.

A: Nice thick creamy foam. It leaves a bit of a mess though. Medium carbonation. Dark dark brown, but clear without haze. Light tan foam, and a lot more of it than I'm used to out of a bomber.

S: Pine resin heavy with a touch of floral. A touch of orange pith. Minor alcohol. Smells like an IPA save for a little cashew nuttiness.

T: Starts with a juiciness and oakiness. Followed up by a strong bitterness and a heavy charred flavor both at the same time. Fascinating that both the roast and hops seem to be nicely balanced in that both are equally strong. The two work together to make this beer quite big on the bittering. It's big and full but not overwhelming. Anyway. The char reminds me of a hickory, but not smoky, just the richness of a wet hardwood. The hops flavor profile is hard to put my finger on. It's predominantly a dry leaf or dried grass; not quite as over dry like a big dry hopped pale, but more like a long boil on the hops. Again the pine resin and wet cedar shines through with this.

M: Medium dry. Finishes pretty clean. Such a big full flavored beer, but it doesn't finish like it.

O: At first I wasn't so sure, but I warmed up to this. I seem to be saying the same thing about all CDAs though. And like other CDAs, I found I actually liked it a few degrees warmer than my fridge likes it. Really strong on the roast and the bittering, but it worked for me.

22oz bottle served in pint glass. Immediate aroma of musty yeast and fresh hops. Beer is brown in color with a big tan head. Flavor is all West Coast IPA with just a hint of toasty, roasted barley goodness. Burnt grain bitterness really complements the heavy dose of IBUs here. Not the most amazing, but definitely a big IPA among CDAs, though still below the limits of Imperial IPA. Would have liked to get more citrus aroma, though.

Just showed up on the shelves here in Juneau, AK.

Into a pint glass.

A: a nice looking black colored body with a decent looking lightened brown to super light black colored head that dies within about thirty seconds

S: large coffee maltiness invading the bitter hops that desperately try to come through - for the most part - it seems to me that the bitterness tries to come through in the coffee part

T: bitter and sweet at separate times and good for the most part; the aftertaste is sticky and tries to be sweet with some sort of element of sweetness to come across what really wants to be a dry finish. However, is this a dry finish? I will say, its a lingering dry finish for the most part.

M: light to medium in body, somewhat sessionable, carbonation is good for the style and for me as its not exactly defined for the style (hahaha), anyways, well, I like it for how it feels inside my mouth and tongue

O: for an American Black Ale, hell yeah, good job Oakshire, in my opinion, I think you did what you were supposed to do. Now if only I had some nice spicy chili on hand to try to pair with this (its only lately from some people I've recently met that Black Ales go well with chili)

650 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Big off white head. Thick collar and wispy surface.

Smell - Grassy hops. Deep caramel. Some coffee malts.

Taste - Grassy hops again. Pine. Caramel malt. Almost chocolatey. Like a brown ale. Bitter and grassy in the finish.

Mouthfeel - Well carbonated. Medium body. More bitter than sweet.

Overall - Not the most exciting. Drinkable and pleasant.

22oz bomber purchased at Huckleberry’s in Spokane for $3.69. No freshness date to be found on the bottle, but it’s labeled as a spring seasonal, and I believe it was first introduced this spring, so I wasn’t anticipating any tiredness.

Poured into a large-sized version of the Boston Lager glass (perfect for bombers). Poured a very dark brown that took on a super dark red shade when held up to light. Big, creamy off-white head that took it’s time receding and left lots of lace.

Citrusy hops greet the sniffer, along with a pretty much equal amount of coffee and toffee notes.

This tastes a lot like a well-hopped stout. The balance between the hops and malts seems virtually equal, with neither getting ahead of the other, though there’s a dry, hoppy zap to the palate at the swallow. As it warms up, the hops stand out a little more, but not enough to really dominate the flavor. The malts are a bit earthier than in the nose, perhaps due to the fact that wheat malt was included in the grain bill.

The body of this beer is at the upper end of medium, if that makes any sense. Surprisingly creamy and oily mouthfeel .

This beer works as a Black IPA and as a stout, and is absolutely delicious, either way. Yes, I would definitely drink this again. Hell, I’d like to session it, but at 6.3% alcohol, it’s probably not a good idea.

draft at Collins Pub on a visit with Old Man Collins, straight off the airplane and post-Salumi

a: served in a standard pint glass, approaching black in color with a solid mocha head

s: woody coffee and dry cocoa roasts mesh well with a moderate citrusy hop nose, seems to hit all the right notes to start things off

m: carbonation around moderate, dry and lively on the palate while at the same time off-loading lots of flavor

t: nice range of dark roasted flavors - dry cocoa, coffee, wood - balanced well with an assertion of citrus and pine hops, deeply flavored but not overbearing, a nice bitterness hits midway and lingers long with deep roast

o: a favorite of the cda’s I’ve had the pleasure to try, full of character and well crafted
