First off, this is NOT a traditional Marzen/Oktoberfest. That is why it is called a Harvest ALE. It honestly tastes like an ESB of sorts.
Apart from all of that, it is downright delicious.
It has a great orange/auburn hue although a little cloudy.
Smells like fresh hops with a strong, malt backbone.
Tastes much better than it smells, hop forward but finishes smoothly with a great malty flavor that tingles your tongue.
Mouthfeel is good for a beer of this style, medium bodied with great carbonation.
I have almost picked up this beer a few times and am sad that I waited as I got the last one at the store. I look forward to sharing it with my buddies.

A ridiculously aggressive pour only gives me a sliver of head. Most of the head is medium sized bubbles, pretty soapy looking. However, as those bubbles pop, they are revealing a nicer, creamier looking head. Head retention isn’t bad, there is still a little head left, but there wasn’t much to start out with, so it’s almost completely gone. The body is a very nice orange amber hazy color. Visibility is pretty darn low because of how cloudy and hazy it is. The carbonation looks extremely low, and knowing Oakshire, it probably will be low. Overall not a bad looking beer though, we’ll see how the lacing turns out, but so far it doesn’t look bad. The smell is a whole lot like their landtrust lager, I don’t know why it is necessarily to make two Oktoberfest beers, but I guess they wanted to. Subtle malts, not harsh or powerful at all. Yet at the same time definitely the dominating smell. Slightly sweet smelling, but more of a subtle sweet. Not really any hops of the nose that I can pick up on, and I’m looking really hard for them. It’s supposed to be 55 IBU’s so I don’t know what’s going on with that. Some light fruity smells in here as well, mangos, pears, that sort of thing. Overall the smell isn’t amazing, but it’s better than most Oktoberfest beers I’ve had. I can’t remember exactly what their landtrust lager smelled like, but after reading over my notes, apparently they are very similar. Anyways, not a great smelling beer, but not that bad either. The taste is pretty interesting. First thing I notice (although it is not even close to the most dominating flavor) is the hops. I’m more just surprised that there are any in the beer, so that’s probably why I realized them first. For sure very subtle, and not a big hop character at all, but they are for sure there, and actually becoming more present with each sip. Yeah they are actually coming through a lot now, which is nice, but frankly it’s actually making the beer a little rough, considering how mild the style is, there isn’t much else to distract me from the bitterness. There is some fruit in here, apples, maybe mangos? There are also some nice Oktoberfest malts, slightly sweet, not overly sweet. I’m honestly surprised the malts aren’t more present in the flavor, most Oktoberfest beers are pretty malty, and it sure smelled like this would be on the aroma. It’s not a bad thing though, it makes the beer unique. It’s a very sour beer, not really from the hops though, not sure what it’s from, it’s very strange. On one hand there are a decent amount of flavors going on here, but on the other hand the beer doesn’t have very big of a flavor. It’s not a bad taste, and maybe a 3.5 is too high because of the sour taste, but who cares, my head is hurting trying to figure this beer out. The beer has a slightly crisp feel to it, from the hops I would assume. I assume that because there is basically no crispness from the carbonation, pretty darn watery in that category. The body is a little watery, but thick enough for the style, this type of beer doesn’t need to be ridiculously thick. It’s not a bad mouthfeel, it’s crisp in some ways, and thick enough, it’s just….a weird feel, just like the rest of the beer really. I’m just as confused grading the mouthfeel as I was grading everything else. The drinkability isn’t bad, for being 6.5% ABV it’s really not that offensive in the way of alcohol. Really the hardest part about the beer is the sour flavor. Overall this is just one hell of a weird beer. The flavor is somewhat complex, but watery and sour. The mouthfeel is damn weird too. I guess the smell and appearance were good though. I’m going to give it a 3 overall, just because I think a 3.5 is a bit high for the flavor, I just couldn’t give it a 3 for flavor for some reason. Anyways, overall a weird beer.
The appearance turned out to be pretty nice. The lacing was very weird, and a little patchy, but it followed me all the way down the glass. The body was pretty from the start. I’ll give it a 4 because there was nothing really all that impressive about the head.

On tap at Oakshire beer dinner, Wildwood PDX, 10.21.11.
Clear medium amber brown body no visible carbonation due to dark hue, 3/4 finger tan head, quick dissipation with minimal lacing. Malty sweetness in the nose, big caramel presence, some floral hops for balance. Taste mirrors nose, not overly sweet, nice balance with the hops. Mouthfeel is medium, alright effervescence. Really drinkable, a fine Marzen. Worth a try.

On tap @ the Oakshire Brewing (Eugene, OR) on 9/3/11. Served in a pint glass.
Pours a slightly hazed copper, with a ½ finger of foamy bright-white head. This retains with a thin frothiness, with some creamy edging that leaves back some nice looking spotty lace. The aroma has an earthy twang to it, of ripe green citrus, fresh dankness, and underlying sweet malt. This has a nice mellow tanginess in the nose.
The taste has a fresh citric bite up front, which propels bitterness and a light herbal feel out into the mouth. A neutral feeling sweet graininess from the malt provides some balance but keeps the focus here on those fresh hop flavors. The finish is dry feeling with a light lingering pithiness. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a firm prickle in the mouth that combines with the citric flavors here to really give this a nice crisp snap on the palate.
This was good, with a fresh and crisp hop profile that kept this quite flavorful and quenching feeling for being a 6-7% beer. This is a solid Harvest Ale and I could have easily went for another glass.

Appearance: (3.5)
- Perfect clear copper penny color. Finger of quickly fizzing white foam leaves a small ring and thin layer on top. Not overly pretty, but proper.
Smell: (3.5)
- Caramel malts, biscuity and bready... rich grainy flare. Vegetable hops.. very grassy and earthy. Makes me think perhaps it is wet hopped. Spicy and very autumn-like.
Taste: (3.0)
- Certainly somewhat sweet and spicy.. with caramel, and gritty grain barley husks. Grassy and super bitter quality as well. Earthy, dirty, and bready. Certainly a grain-rich environment in my mouth right now. Overall the hops seem too vegetable-like.
Mouth Feel: (3.5)
- Chalky dry medium bodied brew. Well carbonated, and super bitteringly dry. Nice chewy touch to it. Spiciness makes the palate water a bit.
Overall: (3.5)
- The beer is certainly bitter. Perhaps a bit too bitter. That;s about the only place hops play a huge role in this one is bitterness. Overall the spicy touch to the malt is nice, but the vegetative hops kind of kill this one for me.

It pours with a caramel color and nice foam head. The aroma that comes off this is quite amazing; it has a lot of bready, caramel, and citrusy notes. The taste come with smooth bitterness that follows with caramel, citrus, and a little pine notes. The mouthfeel is smooth and creamy, with a medium carbonation. Overall, this is probably one of the best Oktoberfest beers I have had to date. It has an amazing hop bitterness that is balance with some slight sweet caramel and bready notes. This beer is quite amazing. If I could I would drink this all day. This beer is definitely an amazing beer, I cannot say enough good things about it. Most Oktoberfest beers tend to be on the sweeter side, but from what I am finding the Pacific Northwest Oktoberfest brews have more of a hoppy bitterness to them that balances out that sweetness. And this by far is my favorite Oktoberfest brew of the Pacific Northwest, I didnt know they could be this amazing!

22oz. from "Lifesource", Salem. $4.55 Appearance? Slightly hazy dark orange with a small bubbly light tan head. Sort of spicy, peppery aromas over caramel style maltiness. Mild flavour profile. bready, cereal malts a touch of hops ..very smooth. Palate is pretty much OK, nice hop after taste and the lowish carbonation lends to drinkability. Overall a strange one..drinkable but the style of this sure baffled me. Its not like a "real" marzen with the ale yeast but still an enjoyable drink
