Notes/Commercial Description:
This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

"Axe of Perun is strong dark lager with hints of chocolate and licorice in the aroma. It has a sweet middle with a touch of roast and chocolate flavors that keep it in balance. This Baltic Porter ends with a slow drawn out finish reminiscent of mocha and brown sugar. 7.4% abv"

Pours a beautiful dark ruby-tinged deep brown with caramel highlights at the edges. A thick foamy head of a nice rusty brown has stunning retention and leaves true sheets of lacing down the glass.

Aroma is surprisingly muted at first, only improving slightly with some warmth. Subtle malt, a hint of earth and a touch of cream... aroma almost reminds me of guinness. Hmm.

Taste is stunningly complex. earthy roasted malt and some vibrant cocoa notes. Earthy green hops lend a definite but pleasant bitterness. Sweet caramel, molasses, dark roasted malt notes. hints of espresso and burnt toffee.

Mouth is pleasantly carbonated, maybe a bit much... body is medium with just enough viscosity for the style. A lingering earthy bitterness that has a bit of chalkiness is stunning and really pulls the flavors together.

I could easily drink a few of these... and the abv, while not high, is barely noticeable. This is one of those single batch Oakshire brews that i hope they make again... it is one that I would drink again and again.

At the Green Dragon PDX $4.75 a pint, 4/17/11.

One finger tan head over dark brown opaque body, quick dissipation with minimal lacing. Nose is pretty complex, more chocolate than smoke with a bit of leather, not picking up much in the way of hops, really subsumed by the smoky aromas. Taste mirrors nose, the finish is quite smoky, I was able to pick up some subtle floral hop notes but not much, chocolate and smoke dominate. Medium-full mouthfeel, pretty dry finish. I thought this was a bit out of balance, though IMO that's pretty characteristic for the style. Tasty, worth a try, but not something I'll order another of in the near future.
