Notes/Commercial Description:
"Our IPA is made with generous additions of Cascade, Simcoe and Palisade hops throughout the brewing, fermentation and conditioning phases, balanced with heaps of organic pale malt. We designed this to not rip your taste buds off your tongue, but rather vigourously stimulate them and your palate into a lupulin-ecstacy of pleasure. During the cross-country truck trip our brewery made to find it's home in Astoria, it was nearly scattered to the cornfields of Nebraska by a tornado. We try to capture some of nature's intensity in every pint."

This is a Mighty fine Meaty IPA. Thick, you can cut it with a knife. Strong from the first taste. If I ever have a chance to home brew I would like to accomplish a taste like this for sure. Oregon comes through with another winner. Gotta visit that state and hang out. I see a road trip coming up.

To quote the Portland Mercury:

I imagine this is what my parent’s apartment smelled like when they lived in Astoria back in the seventies.Vortex is extraordinary on the palate. The first sip brings a bold hit of chocolate, with a little of that hops dopiness, like you just bit the corner off a pot brownie. Then, a rolling fruitiness rises with raspberry and banana tones. Along with the fruit comes a wave of bitterness. But the awesome thing about the bitterness is its wave-like quality—it comes on slow, peaks, and fades, leaving very little mouth drying astringency. For a 97 IBU beer, I find it very pleasant and drinkable, while remaining dynamic and interesting.

this is exactly what it is, tastes like they used pot in the brew with little chunks of it floating in the beer. not pleasant to look at but very enjoyable

Appearance: Nice and clear dark gold with some lighter gold when held to direct light. Head is white and bubbly with minimal retention. Moderate carbonation on the pour keeps a few wisps of head with a slightly larger collar. Nice streaks of lacing.

Smell: Pine needle and grapefruit oil. Straight bitterness, almost aspirin-like, with a nice blast of citrus. Nice and floral with a mild backing herbal element. Loaded with pine and grapefruit. A bit of snappy cracker with bread crust and a lightly caramelized malt base. Nice and bready with some solid toasted almost roasted elements rolling through the back. Dank and earthy. Definitely pushes that West coast vibe.

Taste: Bitter and then some. Aspirin, raw pine needle, and pith for days. Punchy almost mint through the back with a big dank bite. Ruby red grapefruit. Earthy and floral in good measure. So much pine bitterness. Malts are very lightly sweet with some caramel and pale malt sweetness. Light roasted element pushes closer to toasted. Warming does little to balance it, but there's a touch more caramelized malt sweetness. Crazy floral. A hint of cracker layered through the back. Bready on the finish...oh, and bitter. Grapefruit oil and sticky pine.

Mouthfeel: Slick and oily, but not overbearing. Moderate carbonation on a medium body. Sticky and almost too much so, but not quite.

Overall: The Alpha to the Omega

A better beer than it's imperialized version. This is a bitter smack you around type of IPA. A nice hop depth, but it's aggressive, even for the West coast stlye. Bravo. Bonus point for the 16oz can.

16oz can bought at a New Seasons grocery store in Portland, Oregon.

A&S: Hazy orange colored beer with unfiltered elements. Head is creamy and off-white, pour about and finger and retains at a low level. Aroma consists of primarily citrus (lemons) tones with some underlying maltiness.

T&M: Well hopped but also balanced with a maltiness. Hops again are mostly citrus but there is also hints of earthiness. Hangs on your palate a little too long. High medium to full bodied, super creamy and smooth. On the low side of carbonation.

Overall: Enjoyable ipa, this beer brings something that not a ton of brewery are about in Oregon (at least in my opinion, balance). My mind isn't blown, but this beer is for sure above average.
