Notes/Commercial Description:
"Our IPA is made with generous additions of Cascade, Simcoe and Palisade hops throughout the brewing, fermentation and conditioning phases, balanced with heaps of organic pale malt. We designed this to not rip your taste buds off your tongue, but rather vigourously stimulate them and your palate into a lupulin-ecstacy of pleasure. During the cross-country truck trip our brewery made to find it's home in Astoria, it was nearly scattered to the cornfields of Nebraska by a tornado. We try to capture some of nature's intensity in every pint."

16oz can into a tulip. Pours a coppery straw color w/ a big fluffy gravity-defying head that leaves behind nice clumps of sticky lace. Not sure what's going on here, but I like it.

Aroma is deep and earthy, citrusy, fruity, floral, pungent. Some pine in there too. Smells like an herb garden after a storm. Certainly unique. Unlike any other beer I've had.

Taste is likewise floral and fruity, both bitter and sweet. Fecund and tropical. Orange and grapefruit rind. Also has a dry powdery candy quality I can't quite put my finger on.

Mouthfeel is medium-bodied, lingering. Oily and resinous.

Overall this is an interesting take on an IPA. Greater than the sum of its parts. I understand why it's called Vortex.

Pint can into shaker pint glass.

A: gentep pour nets a 2finger fluffy soft off white head that slowly receded into a finger width concave cap of foam. Great lacing. Almost amber colored, almost not pale anymore.

S: big hop aroma. Citrusy and grassy like pretty much every other ipa brewed in Oregon. Don't get me wrong I love my home state but the obsession with overbesring IPAs is a little tired. Not much else going on in this aroma wise.

T: not as agressive as I expected. Opens floral and a bit herby followed by the grassy notes. Gets a little bitter but not extreme like some. Willing to bet it is a reasonable boil time with huge hop addition.

M: medium bodied. Nothing special but not wrong. Just is. Smooth enough to drink but not outstanding.

O: not a bad ipa but not my favorite.

Can I brought to share at drewone's tasting.

Canned 4/20/13.

Pours a murky orange with a foamy bone head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Small chunks of sediment are seen floating around in the beer after the pour. Smell is of malt, citrus zest, and earthy herbal hop aromas. Taste is much the same with herbal hop flavors on the finish. There is a medium amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with a solid hop profile in the aroma and flavor.

16 oz. can poured into a goblet.

Appearance - Slightly hazy deep orange with a nice white head. Good retention and nice lacing.

Smell - Floral and bright citrus hops. A hint of grapefruit and sweet malt backing.

Taste - Excellent hop flavor and sweetness balance. Bright citrus and grapefruit. Sweetness balances it out without being heavy or overly caramelized. Bitterness builds in the finish.

Mouthfeel - Medium heavy. Bitter, but not too much. Slightly creamy.

Overall - Excellent. Reminiscent of top DIPAs, but lacking a touch of refinement.
