Columbia River Coffee Roaster makes a very good blend of Indonesian, South and Central American Coffees called Thundermuck; this beer is Fort George's Cavatos stout made with Thundermuck coffee beans to celebrate Columbia River Roasters’ 20th anniversary. Enjoyed at the tasting room in Astoria, poured into a nonic glass.

Flat black with mahogany edges. One finger of creamy, sticky head leaves a layer of froth thick as a fleece blanket on the sides of the glass.

Obviously a coffee stout in aroma — packed with sharp, bitter beans. Not a ton of complexity behind the coffee, maybe some toasted sourdough, a pat of dark chocolate and some yeasty, baking bread.

Same here: big, black coffee flavor. A touch of dark chocolate tang and earthy hops mix with toasted bread and cocoa nibs. The swallow smooths things out, balancing with just enough sweetness. Lingering roasted notes and soft bitterness.

Fairly high, pinching carbonation could be toned down a bit. Creamy, silky medium body with just a hint of smooth fizz as it moves. Almost no alcohol — the booze is extremely well hidden.

Tasty stuff. Great coffee flavor with just enough extra stuff to balance.
