Great things come in threes. Grain, Hops and Yeast. Fort George, Gigantic and Lompoc. Beer, beer and beer. The next seasonal can release from Fort George Brewery brings them all together to fulfill every beer drinker’s fantasy – the 3-Way IPA. Organic two-row (we couldn’t get 3-row) malted barley creates a solid, crisp profile and a clean, straw-colored hue. A fine balance of aromatic hops treats your senses to a symphony of fragrances and flavors. Add a hardworking California Common yeast and some of Astoria’s slow sand-filtered water, and the 3-Way IPA becomes the perfect summertime beverage. ABV 6.69% – IBU’s? Doesn’t matter. Read the description. Better yet, taste for yourself.

Poured into a Seattle Beer Week pint glass. Pours a slightly hazy coppery amber with a fine white two finger head with excellent retention and lacing. Aroma of bready malt with very aromatic pine and citrus hops. Flavor is grassy hops, grapefruit and citrus rind, light sweet bready malt; finishes with a subsantial citrus bitterness. Medium bodied. A nicely made IPA, but I found myself wishing for some of the aromatic hops in the flavor as well as the smell. Good, but not the stand-out I'd expect from aroma and such a powerhouse collaboration.

16oz : tulip

Pours a hazy, golden-orange with a foamy, slightly off white head.

Fruity citric, grapefruit upfront, with a slightly piney, resiny finish in the nose. Bitter finish, but not overwhelming. Pale malt backbone.

Medium+, foamy body.

A big, tasty, hoppy IPA. Fairly standard, enjoyable West Coast IPA character overall. Some beers I find tasty, but would not want more than 12oz of, but I am looking forward to each tallboy in this 4-pack.

On tap at Elliott Bay Pizza.

A - Served a cloudy medium orange with a fine near white head that fades to the edges very slowly.

S - Grassy, pine and some orange citrus. Pretty typical.

T - Lots of grass, earthy, leafy. I nice bubblegum after taste comes through, which is actually nice after all the bitterness.

D - Good carbonation with a medium bod with lots of bitterness.

O - Solid, but it's another collaboration that kinds sounds better then it actually is.

16oz can into a tulip. Pours a clear honey color w/ a big frothy eggshell head, good retention and lacing.

Aroma is big on the citrus w/ some stickier, earthier fruits in the background, maybe some mango and peach.

Taste is sharply, assertively bitter up front. Plenty of IBUs to spare. A blend of bready pale and light caramel malts tries to break through the wall of hops, but never really does. There's a distinct taste of alcohol too.

Mouthfeel is soft and creamy, despite the tongue-scouring hop treatment.

Overall this is enjoyable enough, but seems somehow out of balance.

16oz can into SN imperial pint. Thanks Jeff!

A: Pours a deep bright golden color with a huge, dense, off-white head that took forever to fade into a thick rocky film that left a complex network of sticky lacing down the glass.
S: Tropical fruit hop nose with light hints of bready malt and pale grains. I get a hint of citrus and maybe cat-piss as well.
T: More citrus than the nose but there’s still a fair amount of tropical fruits. The finish is full of grapefruit citrus and bitter pine, and the aftertaste contains notes of lightly bitter pine and faint bready malt.
M: Medium body, extremely smooth and drinkable mouthfeel, with soft carbonation. Very smooth and creamy.
O: Very solid ipa and a pleasure to drink, but there’s something in the hop profile that I’m not crazy about. Still, I’d drink this again.

Pours a handsome amber color with just a hint of haze and a big white foam. Lots of lacing in the glass. Quite a nice sudsy mouthfeel, but it kind of thin and oily. Pleasant fruity aroma. There is a tang of biscuity malt, but it's mostly just really hoppy. Grapefruit pith and peel. A hint of lemon. Rather acidic on the tongue.

Quite bitter after you sip for awhile, though it's in the range of many California bitter bombs. The thin body and dry finish seem to accentuate the bitter hops. From the 16 oz can purchased at Bottleworks in Seattle.

Canned 25JUN13

It's a ruddy amber with a solid sheet of light cream foam. Smells nice and hoppy with citrus peels, grapefruit, some resin, some grass and grain. Flavor is bitter with grapefruit pith, peppercorn, biscuit and a little gold raisin. Medium bodied with moderately low carb. Decent enough, nothing special.

Served from the can into a nonic glass.

A- Poured a hazy dark orange color with big fluffy white head that left dense webbed lacing.

S- Big peach, tropical notes, citrus, and lemon. Lots of sweet fruity notes and some fragrant floral notes. Smells really nice, but not a very strong aroma.

T- very assertive bitterness up front, big sweet peach and apricot, some lemony and citrusy notes, and light floral notes.

M- Very dry, crisp, prickly carbonation, pretty smooth, and almost creamy on the finish.

O- A surprisingly bitter IPA with lots of big tropical and citrus flavors. I would have enjoyed it a little more if the bitterness was dialed down some, but the hop flavors are big and the more I drank it the better it got.

Poured from 16oz tall can into a pint glass.

Appearance: medium golden hue with a moderate murk and a multitude of tiny floaties. Head is a finger of frothy ecru foam which looks rather nice. Attractive!

Smell: moderately sweet malt with a nice, fruity hop character with some light resiny notes as well. I'm reminded of pear and tangerine, and I find it quite enticing.

Taste: malty but not too sweet; the hops come out right up front and are much more herbal and earthy than the aroma would suggest. The bitterness is pretty raspy, as well; kind of gives it a little bit of a homebrew character. Overall, though, not bad.

Mouthfeel: medium-light body with a big carbonation. It's overly fluffy without being truly creamy; still, I like it well enough.

Overall: quite a decent and drinkable IPA in my book. I could see myself downing a few of these pretty easily.
