I just returned from a three day trip to Oregon. I was travelling with my family and since it was their first trip to Oregon, I wanted them to experience a nice ride on the Pacific coast.

We drove from Portland (greatest place!) to Astoria, and I had pre-selected Ft. George Brewery as our lunch spot from the recommendations of fellow Beer Advocate members.

The brewpub was very easy to find and I decided to try a sampler. Only one of the beers was remarkable, an IPA named "Vortex".

The food wasn't bad but again, unremarkable. The service was fine.

The brewers were busy brewing in the back and were very friendly.

If this place was in Alabama or Tennessee I could understand the A- grade. But with so many other wonderful establishments in the state, I was sorry to have made this my destination.

I've been to around 100 or so breweries/brewpubs/tasting rooms and Fort George is one of the best. Every year it seems to continue to evolve for the better. At this point there are three separate areas to grab a beer: the first floor, upstairs, and the tasting room located next door in their packaging and storing facility. Each area offers a different list of beers to choose from and a separate menu as well. Though it's a blast to bounce between all three, I find it very difficult to leave the taproom. During my visits, the bartenders were so friendly and fun to chat with that we didn't want to go anywhere else.

Of course the beer is wonderful, whether it's the standard lineup (Vortex IPA, Cavatica Stout, OPA) or one off/seasonal (Kentucky Coffee Girl, Fresh Hop IPA, Tender Loving Empire and many others) it's tough to go wrong.

As for food the upstairs focuses on wood fired pizza, the downstairs has sausages, fish and chips (among the best I've ever had), and tacos. Out in the tasting room, it seems to vary more often but the Thai curry that we had during one trip was, according to my girlfriend, as good as anything she had in Thailand.

All of the employees seemed very happy, and that translates to great service. The people of Astoria are lucky to have such a wonderful place as their local brewpub.

The wife and I drove from Portland to Astoria on a Sunday night and got to this little sleepy coastal town late enough (early for the rest of the world) that most everything was closed. Except for Fort George! Open until 11pm on a Sunday, not too bad.

The brewery is located in an old industrial building and is rather vast. There is an upstairs section with a pizza oven, tables, a stage for live music and plenty of room to roam, plus some big windows to look at the Columbia River. The downstairs area is much smaller, with only a couple of tables and a long bar. We chilled at a high-top table around the bar and enjoyed a good time.

The bartender was extremely efficient and attentive and we got some of the best service ever. I am very demanding when it comes to service (average is not good enough), but this guy delivered and then some.

There are 12 taps, all of house-made beer. Because of "Stout Month", eight of them were dark beers, including Cavatica, Dark Matter (aged in Pinot Noir and Bourbon), Coffee Girl, Up in Smoke, Murky Pearl, Squashed Stout, Spank and Viva la Stout.

I appreciate all the inventiveness that goes on these stouts (Mexican chocolate, spices, oysters, you name it) but they all taste kind of the same to me, unfortunately. The wife had a Vortex IPA, damn good. We bought a four-pack of cans but forgot it at the hotel.

The pizza here is glorious, crispy and thin, although it is a little expensive and the truffle-cheese we got was not very truffle-y. We also shared a nice salmon spread on pita and I had an oyster from Willapa Bay to die for.

Check out the spiral staircase and climb it up to go to the upper floor! This place is fantastic.

I really like this place and we got there whenever we're in Astoria. Old building with historical value which is neat. They've added a outdoor patio since we were there last. The inside is a little worn looking and could use a little TLC. Food is good but not great. Pizza is served upstairs only so we've never tried it. If your in Astoria I think it's worth a visit. Beer is good.

Astoria was one of our destinations on a Pacific Northwest trip and Fort George was one place I wanted to go. It did not disappoint. They had about a dozen of their beers on tap with two guest beers. They covered many beer styles from lager to ipa to wit to stout. Easily something for everyone. We did the sampler tray and glasses of the Beta 2.3 IPA and Truffle Shuffle Stout (Astoria is home to the house from the Goonies). Each beer was solid to outstanding. All pints were $4.50 which was reasonable for the quality of what was being served.

Service was terrific. Explaining each of the beers in depth on the sampler tray, checking on us several times, etc. For food, we had the house made sausage sampler which was very good. We got a couple of four packs of the Vortex IPA which was my favorite beer and a four pack of the whiskey rye aged Cavatica Stout. Just a great experience overall. These are top notch brews in a fun place.
