Mark's back, and hops came with him in a big way. When this was available last year, it was a great beer with a pungent spicy pepper to add to the flavor. The pepper was great, but dominated all the taste. Now, he's re-released it, and I'm proud to be the first to review it. It may be a little shy of 11% ABV or a little over, but his White Storm and Black Storm are about the same.
A: Dark, visible ruby shine off the light, small head and lace.
S: Candy hops, and a little bit of the malt and alcohol mixed in.
M: Foam forms, washes well with a bitter aftertaste that is just so slight. The malts make this a bit of a sweet bread treat.
T: So much at work. Hops. Candy hops but not overly sweet. Not quite grapefruit, not quite juicy fruit, almost a pixie stick kind of sweet yet dry. Raisin is there too, but meshes well. Maltiness dumbs the bitter in a welcome way and the alcohol is at the back, advertising an imperial. This is an imperial amber ale but there is no selection for it. I think I've tried maybe one or two bottled styles of IAA, nothing close.
It's the malt stupid! It's not an IPA or DIPA, it's IAA and it's tastier than even the great White Storm that Mark brews. Stuff like this keep me coming back for more and more.
