Stopped in here on Tuesday March 6. It was early enough in the evening that I was able to get a spot at the bar with no problem but by the time I left it was well crowded. You can see the shiny tanks from the brewery in the back. The bar is immediately to your right and it looks like they have outdoor seating at the bar as well. I started off with a Pilsener and the Cajun Pasta. Both the beer and the meal were top notch. I had a few more beers after that and all were good examples of each style. Their lineup is mainly German styles but they had a Baltic Porter as well which is their winter seasonal.

I highly recommend the place as it's great for drinkers of good beer while being accessible to all tastes. Granted you're not likely to get a hop bomb here but you can go almost anywhere for that. The selection takes a hit because it looks like they have the same selection year round with the exception of a seasonal. Gordon Biersch seems to be about sticking with good German Ales & Lagers like their name says.

The main reason why I would go to dinner at Gordon Biersch is certainly the draft beer selection. The food part would be secondary, even so the menu is pretty good. The restaurant and bar here in Rockville is unfortunately overcrowded at all times, and there is almost always a waiting time, which I do not like.
Yet, the beer selection is always appealing and there is nothing better than a fresh cold draft beer in any variation. The beers are all decent, good beers and enjoyable! Like I said before, I always go there for the beer, and not for the food.

Gordon Biersch is a nice place to grab dinner and a drink. It's in the new "downtown" Rockville area which is fairly nice at night though not much else is going on.

As far as the beers go they are decent to solid. None of them are great beers for beer geeks. I like them but would like if they had one stronger beer like a DIPA or Imperial Stout at a time.

The service is fine but not great. The restaurant itself is fairly large and noisy but attractive.

The food is pretty good and covers the basics of hamburgers, pizzas, steaks, and pasta.

Overall nice if you're close but not worth a trip.

I have been an intermittent customer at Gordon Biersch in Rockville off and on for the past three years, and after my recent return visit have decided to finally write a review.

Located in the center of downtown Rockville, GB seems like the ideal location for after work happy hour visits. It is usually busy in the late afternoon and early evening on weekdays and can have a good deal of patronage on weekends at any time. The interior design is best described as a combination of contrasts. They try to keep a typically dark atmosphere, like most other bars. This ambiance highlights chosen areas of brightness and lights. Several televisions are optimally placed behind the bar and in strategic corners, in ways to make them stand out. Similarly, liquor bottles are prominently displayed with fronting light to suggest their contents to willing patrons. Finally, the chrome tap stands topped with clearly denominated and colorful labels denoting style of beer, capitalize on ceiling lights making for an impressive bar setup. The bar itself, located on the immediate left hand side of the restaurant, is replete with around twenty high, well-cushioned stools, a very well varnished counter top, and attractive frosted glass windows. There are plenty of tables both in the front room and the back dining room located on the right hand side of the structure. Mixture of brick frontal walls and wooden back sections, with stained wood fixtures make for an overall good design scheme, even it seems to be a bit packaged and mindful of a chain establishment, though one of high quality.

Rockville's Gordon Biersch typically has six or seven beers on tap. All are basically mid-range in alcohol content (there are no DIPAs or barleywines here). They are well-crafted, mainly German style beers. Regulars include a Schwarzbier, Czech Pilsner, a very tasty hefeweizen with an exceptional nose, the nicely textured and malty Marzen, and a Golden Export Dortmunder. Seasonals include a dunkelweizen and my favorite, their masterful version of a Maibock, a fresh malt beverage, that is biscuity and packs quite a bit of well-placed hop presence. All of these beers are tasty and seem to be good representatives of their styles. They are generally around $5 for a half-liter pour--a bargain for this area--and always poured in the proper glassware. An added bonus is that you always get the proper amount of liquid, denoted by the line on your hefeweizen, pilsner, or bock glass. On the whole, you should expect neither an extensive selection of brews, or satisfactory prescriptions for hop addicts. But if you respect balanced, flavorful brews you won't be disappointed.

Service and food are both good. Bartenders and servers know the basics about their beer and have always been friendly. Because the styles don't rotate much (with the exception of seasonals--and there are only four of those a year) after a couple of visits you will probably not have any questions, largely obviating the need of much beer knowledge among their workers. They are usually pretty quick to help you. Can't ask for much more.

I like this place. Though I am often averse to chain establishments, the brewmeister at this GB does an excellent job in crafting his beers. The nice vibe and appealing atmosphere make this a good place to visit and enjoy a beer.

When I got to Gordon Biersch in Rockville, I figured it was imperative that I try the sampler. I didn't have a beer that night that I didn't like (see my reviews). The bar itself is in a great location, right in the middle of downtown Rockville. The service wasn't bad, and surprisingly the price was not that expensive at all. The sampler of seven different beers (3oz each) only cost $5.75. When I am in Rockville I am certainly going to try and frequent this location more often. It is one of the better breweries in the DC metro area.

Not a bad atmosphere, at the bottom of a large newly constructed building in downtown Rockville. I went here for a pint after a long day walking around D.C. The atmosphere was pretty good, I was expecting worse for a chain place but was completely surprised. Relaxed bar atmosphere not centered around the beer but centered around having a good time. Nice long bar with a lot of room and a lot of little tables around the bar area and a few booths to accommodate parties of multiple sizes. The tanks were at one end of the restaurant behind glass which was cool to watch.
The quality was good, the price wasn't too bad. The selection was OK, they had 6 beers on tap that were mostly catered to the general public (as in no stouts, porters, ipas, etc but wheat, marzen, kolsch, pale, etc). The service was OK, it was busy around the bar so it's hard to say. I didn't have any food so I can't comment on that, but the beer was decent. It had a good taste and feel to it, something a little more authentic about it than at the other chain brewpubs I've been to.
Overall, not bad, this is a good place to come with a group of friends who some like beer and some like other stuff.

Not many places like this in Rockville. You have to go about ~10 miles out to find other good brewpubs (i.e. DFH Alehouse). It's located in the newly renovated Rockville Town center with plenty of parking. They have a bar area upfront and regular seating in the back. They have a good amount of TV's in the bar area and the seating in the back is sectioned off well so you have a lot of room between tables.

The food is typical pub fare, but done pretty well. Haven't had any problems with any of their food and most have surpassed my expectations. Still, their food is pretty ordinary.

Their beer, while nothing extraordinary, are all fairly balanced and drinkable (i.e. none are very high in %ABV). All of the ones I've had were simple, crisp, refreshing beers that pair well with their food. If you are expecting beers that push the limits of brewing, you are in the wrong place.

When its not busy (i.e. Friday/Saturday nights), the service and atmosphere is better--there are less drunken idiots. As a result, if you are here during these peak times, service slows down drastically and it gets loud.

Good food and simple, balanced beers. If you can, don't go during the peak bar hours and you will have good service. It's a bit more expensive than your typical family chain restaurant, but well worth it.

Saw Dan Gordon featured in BA Magazine and decided to give it a try (I also bought his CD... great jazz). The Rockville location is fairly new and, while it's a little difficult to find (unless you've been there before), the interior is really nice. Very classy, upscale pub atmosphere in front with a really nice restaurant in back, separated by a glass wall (for noise attenuation, I guess, since they no longer allow smoking in MD restaurants).

Menu is fantastic, if a bit pricey. The traditional "pub" fare is reasonable, but (IMHO) much better than most. I always try the stereotypical fish & chips just to compare. This is easily the best so far (even better than--gasp--DuClaw). The garlic fries are extremely addicting, but you pay for it all afternoon.

The beer is excellent. I would compare the quality to DuClaw, though I wouldn't say that the selection is as broad. Only 6 beers on tap, though a nice range of selections. I'll discuss the beers separately. Suffice it to say that they are all quite exemplary for their styles and well worth the trip. I had the sampler and (had I more time) I would have liked a full pint of some of them. Very well done.

After hearing their Brewmaster last week on The Brewing Network's Sunday Show, I decided to head out to Rockville and give GB a shot. I live in Phoenix, MD, so DuClaw is the perennial favorite.

First, if you're using a GPS to find the place, hope that it's been updated lately. The address is 200, but most mapping programs and GPS have yet to incorporate it, so shoot for 199.

The environment is welcoming and expansive, and one may definitely discern that a lot of money went into the decor. The bar, at least at 6 p.m., is full of 30 and 40somethings that work in the area looking for a happy hour buzz. There are four HDTVs running sports (standard fare).

The food menu is extensive and individual to each location. Check out their web site for a PDF download in advance.

Our server, "John S.", provided exceptional service. There are a number of items on the menu that caught our eye, but he was able to give his frank opinion on what was best. John was knowledgable about the beers. I had a sampler, with the seasonal Maibock being in rotation.

What I dug about GB was that there wasn't the standard "Brewpub" food: beer battered fish n' chips, etc. The menu was clearly carefully thought out. It's also pricy, but then again, you're in Rockville. I wouldn't consider it expensive, though. Head on down to Dogfish Head if you want expensive.

As a BJCP-certified judge, I wasn't able to find any discernable faults with the beers. Quite tasty.

While the in house brews offered are actually quite good, I am overall not very impressed with this place. For starters, they seem to focus much more on being a restaurant than a bar. This is probably due to the higher demand for restaurant-like atmosphere in suburban rockville. Given the layout of the building, they definitely could have done a better job designing the bar area.

The food is in general quite good, but a bit on the expensive side. Although the servers generally lack knowledge about their beers (they'll usually just recommend their "favorite"), the beers, as mentioned, are very good. I was particularly impressed with their Schwarzbier and their Hefeweizen.

It's definitely a nice place to grab some quality beer after work in Rockville (note: this is a rare thing in Rockville), or a decent restaurant to go to that has good beer...but aside from that, there is nothing completely outstanding about this place.

Never in my wild dreams could I ever conceive of drinking craft beer in Rockville, Maryland. However, dreams do come true; or in this case, craft beer is now available at the recently opened Gordon Biersch brewpub.

Located about 20 miles northwest of Washington D.C. and a 25-minute ride on the Metro Red Line (Rockville Station), this brand new member of the Gordon Biersch chain – there is another downtown and another in Tyson’s Corner, Virginia – is part of the rebirth of downtown Rockville, which was always considered a ghost town void of nightlife. Now this once sad place has started to boom, with commercial development in the guise of Rockville Town Center, a “community” of shopping, restaurants and condominiums slapped together amid a six-story parking garage. (Needless to say, parking is plentiful.) But, as the late and great Michael Jackson would say … I digress.

The interior seems to be aiming for trendy, but that’s not the word to use. I did appreciate the long bar in the front that looks out onto the outdoor terrace – rather reminiscent of a beachfront bar (without a beach, sadly). Of course, we can’t drink beer without being inundated with sports, so Gordon Biersch has diligently supplied half-dozen of large-screen plasma TVs.

The menu was eclectic; there was something for everyone’s taste, particularly the upscale appetizer selections. Also available was an extensive wine list for those preferring the grape to the grain and, for the James Bond wannabees, several varieties of Martinis.

Anyone familiar with Gordon Biersch knows that they are primarily purveyors of German lagers, although the downtown location (see my Review in Washington DC beerfly) once offered Baltic Porter under a previous brewer. Speaking of which, the brewer at this location is Jim Sobczak, formerly of Fordham Brewing.

One issue is the lack of knowledge from the servers (Guinness and black lagers are separate styles). But not everyone lives for beer. Another is the spotty service – one shouldn’t remind servers that food was ordered. But this place is new and possessing all the kinks of a new place. The bartender did inform me that this place does “booming” after work business – Rockville is the county seat of Montgomery County and home to hundreds of county workers.

So, Rockville is a dreary backwater no more. While I won’t recommend that anyone make a special trip here, it is nice to know about it. Of course, it’s always nice to have a new place to drink beer.
