On-draught @ Uncle Billy's in 2014 (reviewed from notes). 5.10% ABV. 32 IBUs. Pale ale.
APPEARANCE: Head is white in colour and half a finger's width. Average (~2 minute) retention. Boasts nice even lacing as it recedes. Thickness/consistency is okay; not the most robust. Not very creamy/frothy.
Body is a hazy nontransparent translucent orange of average vibrance. I see no yeast/lees particulate within. Appears unfiltered.
Seems slightly undercarbonated. Overall, it's less clean looking than most American pale ales, but then they're after an English pale ale profile judging by the name of the beer. I'm optimistic.
AROMA: Surprisingly fresh and hoppy. Attractive bursts of fresh citrus - including grapefruit, orange, and tangerine. Floral hop notes. Fruity zest. Some pine. Light resinous aromatics.
It's a nice aroma for a pale ale.
No overt yeasty, boozy, or off-flavours.
Pleasant, and of mild strength.
TASTE: It's not soapy, thankfully. Boasts a lovely citrusy character and some nice floral character as well. Pale malt sweetness is in there, of course. Clean barley. Fruity zest.
The promise of the aroma unfortunately isn't fulfilled here. It's surprisingly simple and reticent. I do like it, and it's balanced enough, but it lacks the complexity, subtlety, and nuance of superior pale ales.
Depth, duration, and intensity of flavour are average.
TEXTURE: Clean, smooth, wet, and somewhat refreshing. Overcarbonated. Crisp. A bit too heavy and filling for a pale ale.
Not oily, gushed, boozy, hot, astringent, or harsh on the palate. Overall presence on the palate is okay.
2.75
OVERALL: I wouldn't get it a second time. the aroma promises more than the taste delivers, and overall it's just not a very impressive pale ale whether you judge by English or American pale ale conventions.
