Served on-tap at Uncle Billy's with some tasty BBQ.
No surprise here that Code Red shows a hint of tawny rust to its golden orange color. A bit hazy, too. At least it's not the same color as the Mountain Dew spin-off... Superb head retention of creaky khaki foam that coats the pint with thick sheets of lacing. The aroma is sweet with amber malts and layers of toffee & caramel, while the hops smell gummy and tropical with notes of citrus, mango, and pineapple.
The flavor packs a healthy does of piny bitterness across all parts of the tongue, which unfortunately overpowers the fruity hops in the aroma. Malts are crisp and pale with a hint of caramel. The mouthfeel sports a medium body with a healthy carbonation level that livens up the back of the palate and brings out more of that alpha acid bitterness. Still, Code Red is a bit too unbalanced for me to want more than one of these IPA's in a sitting. Worthy, sure, but Uncle Billy's has brewed better.
