Double Mountain Brewery & Taproom
Oregon, United States | website

Style: American Porter

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.60%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
This beer is a tribute to the Steamship Carrie Ladd that ran freight and passengers from Portland to the Cascade Rapids (Cascade Locks) from 1859 to 1862. We ferment this beer with Czech Lager yeast at ale temperature to temper the sulfur that this yeast tends to throw. The unique ferment temperature provides a fresh bread aroma with light cherry fruit overtones to this already rich, roasted, and robust porter. This style was popular among the pioneers that flocked to the coastal Northwest for the gold and timber rush. 6.6% ABV, 43 BU

Poured from 500mL bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance: dark brown with ruby highlights; body is haze-free and shows a strong effervescence. Head is a thick finger of pillowy tan foam with a nice lacing left on the glass. Reminds me more of an English porter in color, but it's still a damn fine looking beer.

Smell: sweet and roasty with a nice chocolate character. Not overly complex, but alluring.

Taste: roasty and chocolatey up front with an abundance of vegetal hop character. There's some nice caramel and toffee in there, as well, but the vegetal hops and roasty elements really fight each other.

Mouthfeel: medium body with a good carbonation and a very satisfying creaminess. I like it.

Overall: this beer has its strong points, but I feel like the flavors don't harmonize well.

Bready, Fruity, Roasty, Clean

Fermented with lager yeast, but at ale yeast temperatures, like a classic Steam Beer. A dark, ruby-colored brew with deep brown hues that's topped with a thick foamy head. Bready in the nose with a faint ripe cherry aroma and coffee suggestions, Carrie Ladd is smooth with a light crispness beneath and a firm body. There’s a lager-esque bite up front with a fruity, berry-like base, caramel and cocoa undertones and a dry roasty edge. It finishes fairly clean with some residual bitterness and earthy notes. Not much of a Porter in the modern sense, but who cares?! This is a delicious hybrid beer.

As reviewed in BeerAdvocate magazine #112 (May 2016).

Not a typical porter. Bready and I swear I get a little peanut flavor. Closer to a stout, IMO. I'd drink it again for sure.

Pours a finger and half of rounded head on a black body. Looks amazing.
The aroma is coffee with roasted malt.
The taste is dark chocolate, coffee, roasted and burnt malt in the best blend.
The texture is super smooth with low carbonation.
Excellent.

Bottle picked up at the COOP, but has hit all the bottleshops... Pours mostly clear deeeep walnut brown with a short lived light tan head.. spotty lacing.. cocoa and sorta nutty.. light fruitiness... medium sweetness.. very well balanced aroma and flavor.. Solid porter for sure.

Poured into a Reuben's Brew snifter. Pours a dark mahogany brown with ruby tones and a fine one finger light brown head with good retention and lots of lacing. Aroma of toasted malt with a hint of char, milk chocolate. Flavor follows with dark malt, chocolate and a bit of lactose. Finishes malty with a hint of light fruit and a light grassy hop bitterness. Medium bodied with light, smooth creaminess. A nice porter with good mouth feel and flavorful toasted malt and slight bitterness in the finish. Well balanced and pleasant. I will get this again.

Advertised as a "steam porter", I had to try this.

Look : Dark chocolate brown, 90% opacity.

Smell : Cocoa, coffee dustings, baked malts

Taste : High hop out front, followed by a charge of roast coffee and milk, and then earth. A pretty complex flavor profile.

Feel : Medium bodied, ends with alcohol dryness.

Overall : Better than their Irish Dry stout, this was their superior dark beer.

Lovely pour in the tall Maredsous goblet. Lots of fluffy beige foam on the dark red-tinted brown brew. Sudsy on the tongue. Some grainy aroma with a hint of coffee. Chewy dark brew with a deep malty taste. Lots of dark roasted grain. Caramel finish with a little bitterness. Quite quaffable and the lacing in the glass and the frothy mouthfeel are quite pleasant. From the 500 ml bottle purchased at Hi-Time Wine Cellars in southern California.

Bottled 3/27/14.

Pours an opaque super dark brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace slowly drip into the remaining beer on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa powder, and chocolate syrup aromas. Taste is much the same with char and burnt cocoa flavors on the finish. There is a medium amount of roast bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with lots of nice roast and char qualities all around.
