We are proud to release the Devil’s Cuvee Kriek, an oak barrel aged Devil’s Kriek Belgian style sour ale brewed with cherries. This labor intensive sour ale has been quoted as ‘the best version yet’ by beer bloggers and inciting cries of ‘damn that’s good!’ from across the bar. You can now get in on the barrel aged goodness at the Double Mountain taproom, throughout the Northwest, and parts of Southern California.
Description: Carefully selected Devil’s Kriek from 2014 aged on Hood River Valley Bing and Vann cherries was given extra time in new French Oak barrels and blended with a small portion of next year’s Kriek. It’s time in the oak gave it more depth and wisdom, and ripened the fruit imparting a sherry and dry red wine character. The blend brings some youth and vivacity of the fruit to the table. With this beer we pay homage to the traditions set before us, and welcome the future ahead.

2015 bottling
Appearance: Pours a tawny-tinged ruby color with a one finger mauve head; the retention was not great nor was there much lacing
Smell: Tart black cherry and Rhone red wine tones; oaky with a hint of vanilla
Taste: Black cherry forward with tart tones and Rhone red wine flavors building; oaky and tannic, through the middle; the finish brings a lot of mineral complexities with vanilla and a hint of Port
Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate to high carbonation
Overall: An outstanding Kriek that brings a lot of complexity
Thanks, philhyde, for the opportunity

2015 bottle
Pours hazy ruddy brown, dark scarlet tint. White ring for a head.
Smells of rich tart cherry, oak, hints of scotch.
Flavor is of rich tart cherry, oak, wine and wine tannins, nondescript spirits, and very dry apple cider vinegar.
Medium body, fizzy carbonation on the tongue.
Exquisite. Rich, nuanced, tart and slow-drinking. Very worth trying if you can get it. I'll remember this one fondly.

2016 bottle cellared at 55deg. Slight oxidation on nose and taste. Cherries have mellowed out to perfection. Very complex oaky character. One of the best American Flanders Red out there.

This sour pours a dark mahogany color with a large, fluffy head. It doesn't have much of a smell, though the acidity does hit the nostrils a bit. It tastes like black cherry, but there is an oaty flavor underlying it that makes this a bit better than the average sour, and the mouthfeel has a delectable warmth from the acidity, carbonation, and sourness.

2015 Batch from the bottle.
This deep purple liquid is full of dark and tart cherries in both aroma and taste. It is wonderfully backed by solid doses of oak and red wine and a sharp acidity, but not too puckering of a sour. Just right in fact. A real treat to sip and savor. A proper review will be in my future. Cheers.
