"This is Hop Lava's bigger, meaner cousin -- a radiant orange-hued beer featuring more than six pounds of hops per barrel. The out-of-control hopping is barely balanced by a tight malt backbone and noticable alcohol notes. We used our Kolsch yeast on this one, which gives it a different type of fruitiness than the Belgian ale yeast used in Hop Lava."
Brewed with organic Pilsner and Munich malt, imported crystal malt, Centennial and Cascade hops. 9.0%ABV, 95+ BU

[Original rating 2013-06-14] Draft at Bailey’s Tap Room in Portland. Pours hazy gold with no head. Aroma is grapefruit, pine, faint apple. Taste is citrusy hops backed by sweet malt. Finish is sweet... a great DIPA.

Clear red gold with two fingers of off white head. Rings and splotches of lace form as the head drops.
Smell is dank and floral hops.
Taste is dank and tasty bitter hops with a good amount of malt backbone.
Mouthfeel is full with good carbonation. The finish is balanced with a drying effect.
Overall a big DIPA very enjoyable. Bottled on 10/16/2017. About five months old.

I poured this into a snifter. The appearance is a hazy orange to brown color with a one finger white foamy head that drastically falls and leaves a decent spider web coating of lace. The smell is pure sweet citrus, well amplified with powerful grapefruit and other tropical fruits. The taste is mainly sweet through the citrus. There is a slight grapefruit aftertaste leading to a dry citrusy finish. On the palate, it sits about a medium on the body with the right amount of carbonation invading my mouth and tongue. There seems to be a slight sessionable aspect to it as well. Overall, I say this is a well worthy DIPA of having again as I’m quite impressed with this.

Orange-y in color with a thick, creamy head. Herbal, tropical and boozy in the nose. Creamy and soft mouthfeel. Bready, doughy, dry malt base followed by a semi-astringent bitterness. Thin fruitiness with faint tropical notes, pine, orange and rind. Vodka-like alcohol and heat. Thinner and dryer than other Imperial IPAs, and the everything seems a bit muted, which makes the booziness of this beer more dominant.
Overall OK. Interesting use of Kölsch yeast, which definitely cleans things up; perhaps a bit too much.

On tap at PreFunk. Aroma is all hop, leading in to a big hop smack in the chops, lots of bitterness, lots of warmth. Clear medium gold body, small wispy head, this all about the hops from taste to finish. Decent DIPA

8oz glass at Beer Revolution Edmonton's tap takeover leftovers for this American brewing concern.
This beer appears a clear, medium copper amber colour, with one skinny-ass finger of wispy and generally just bubbly off-white head, which leaves some tight hedgerow lace around the glass as things slowly recede.
It smells of big caramel/toffee/treacle malt, the Yuk-a-Flux from my university dorm days (vodka-soaked fruit, essentially), and a commensurate dose of edgy piney, leafy, and herbal hop bitterness. The taste is bready and doughy caramel malt, sort of biscuity toffee, navel orange and red Texas grapefruit citrus flesh, a minor wet stone path thing, more understated tropical fruitiness, and a healthy dose of leafy, piney, and wet grassy West Coast verdant hoppiness.
The carbonation is adequate for the job in question, via its so-so frothiness, the body a solid middleweight, and sort of smooth, as both the hops and booze trod a little too heavily here. It finishes off-dry, the big malt, big hops, and big booze all playing well enough together.
Overall, I cannot call this the best DIPA that I've ever encountered, but it ain't the worst by any stretch of the imagination, either. Perhaps a tad disjointed, but when I put my big boy pants on, things work out just fine.

Picked up a 500 ml bottle from the Belmont Station this past Saturday for $5.50. Bottled on 7/14/16.
Beer poured golden with a solid white head that has some decent hang time.
Nose is pretty non descript, some hints of citrus and a bit of the large malt back bone.
Taste is citrus rind forward and vegetal that stays on top of the malts. Definitely uneven.
Mouthfeel is medium to full bodied and pretty smooth.
Overall an OK IIPA but definitely nothing to seek out. Too much rind and vegy flavor left behind for my palette.

From 500ml bottle dated 2/23/2015. Looks good, not much smell, tastes real good for age. Not much hop flavor left but still very solid. I can only imagine what this tastes like fresh. Thanks to Bring-on-the-Beer for getting this to me here in Tampa. 4.25

A--Slightly cloudy but a wonderful golden...dark straw to light amber SRM 5/6
S--Malty and caramel but not annoyingly so as with a lot of IIPAs. Very pleasant.
T--Surprisingly balanced and subdued with a delayed set of balanced sweet flavors...light caramel is most apparent
M--luxurious for an IPA. Rich mahogany and leatherbound books.
O--Very surprised the Molten version is so much more balanced than the Hot. Both great beers but this one is a sneaky SOB...way too drinkable and not overly malty or sickeningly sweet like other IIPAs.
