BEER INFO

Brewed by:
Double Mountain Brewery & Taproom
Oregon, United States | website

Style: American Double / Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
"This is Hop Lava's bigger, meaner cousin -- a radiant orange-hued beer featuring more than six pounds of hops per barrel. The out-of-control hopping is barely balanced by a tight malt backbone and noticable alcohol notes. We used our Kolsch yeast on this one, which gives it a different type of fruitiness than the Belgian ale yeast used in Hop Lava."

Brewed with organic Pilsner and Munich malt, imported crystal malt, Centennial and Cascade hops. 9.0%ABV, 95+ BU

From 500ml bottle dated 2/23/2015. Looks good, not much smell, tastes real good for age. Not much hop flavor left but still very solid. I can only imagine what this tastes like fresh. Thanks to Bring-on-the-Beer for getting this to me here in Tampa. 4.25

A: orange. Thin head. Thin, short- lived lacing.
S: orange and pine
T: malt and alcohol balanced well with hop flavor. Piney-Hop bitterness is the strong finish
O: great NW imperial IPA. Good representation. Big IPA with strong hop bitterness balanced well with base malt and alcohol.

Pricey bottle picked up at Brewforia Meridian last night for about $8... Expensive. Pours a hazy dark golden... nice lacing and retention. Nose is light citrus/piney hoppiness... flavor has nothing better to offer... I want to like it more, but it is sooo pedestrian. Nothing good to brag about.

Poured into a Chuckanut pint glass. Pours a medium golden amber with a fine two finger white head that continues building for a while after the pour and leaves lots of lacing. Aroma of citrus and piney hops, tropical and light citrus fruit, mild sweet malt. Flavor is dedicated to the hops, resinous and citrus with the same light tropical and orange family fruit as in the aroma. Malt supports the hops, but has little character of its own. Finishes with pleasant, sweet resinous hop bitterness. Medium bodied with light creaminess. Although the hops are presented well here, this is not a tongue numbing hop bomb. I usually like solid malt support in my IIPAs, and the malt here is really quiet and subdued, but seems to balance the hops nicely. Nice fruit, interesting hop bill; a very satisfying IIPA from a brewery that rarely disappoints.
