American Double / Imperial IPA |  8.00% ABV

Availability: Rotating

Notes/Commercial Description:
"This is Hop Lava's bigger, meaner cousin -- a radiant orange-hued beer featuring more than six pounds of hops per barrel. The out-of-control hopping is barely balanced by a tight malt backbone and noticable alcohol notes. We used our Kolsch yeast on this one, which gives it a different type of fruitiness than the Belgian ale yeast used in Hop Lava."

Brewed with organic Pilsner and Munich malt, imported crystal malt, Centennial and Cascade hops. 9.0%ABV, 95+ BU

Pricey bottle picked up at Brewforia Meridian last night for about $8... Expensive. Pours a hazy dark golden... nice lacing and retention. Nose is light citrus/piney hoppiness... flavor has nothing better to offer... I want to like it more, but it is sooo pedestrian. Nothing good to brag about.

Sweet and strong, and a little strange as well. Pours a clear amber in the tulip with a decent head. Very aromatic. I think of broiled grapefruit, complete with the burnt sugar.

This starts out with a hoppy floral taste but turns toasty. More herbal bitterness than hops to start, but the bitter fruit taste keeps coming. Scorched mango with oiled grilled bananas. This is an odd duck but very likeable for being less bitter and more flavorful.

On tap at The Noble Fir in Ballard (Seattle). I saw this in bottles at QFC Market as well.

A: orange. Thin head. Thin, short- lived lacing.
S: orange and pine
T: malt and alcohol balanced well with hop flavor. Piney-Hop bitterness is the strong finish
O: great NW imperial IPA. Good representation. Big IPA with strong hop bitterness balanced well with base malt and alcohol.
