I've had two chances to visit Double Mountain. Once, late on a Tuesday night after driving over 1,000 miles while moving from Colorado to Oregon. I was less than seventy miles from my new home in Portland, but I wanted to drive the Columbia River Gorge in daylight, so I stopped at Double Mountain before heading down the road to a state park to camp for the night. The second time, some months later, was with a group of friends. Both times, Double Mountain impressed me with its cozy, social atmosphere, beautifully shaped imperial pints, and quality beer. The pizza is also quite tasty, if slightly expensive. (What is it with Oregon brewpubs and their pricey pizza? That's right HUB, Laurelwood, Double Mountain...I'm looking right at you.)
The brewpub itself is small and intimate. It's also extremely popular, which means that it's hard to get a table. In other spaces, I might have felt that this was suffocating--really, there are only a handful of tables, a few seats at the bar, some outdoor seating, and a couch zone. But there's something about the setup here that works. It feels social and inviting, and I'm happy to see a new(ish) brewpub be so popular.
Charlie and the folks at Double Mountain keep six or seven house beers on tap. Their regulars include two standouts: the IRA and Hop Lava (IPA). Both see pretty regular rotation through many of Portland's restaurants and beer bars, and both are delicious. The IRA is on par with Green Flash and Bear Republic as far as "West coast" ambers go (Double Mtn's 'winter IPA' Fa La La La La might also be put into that category and doesn't disappoint, either) in setting a high standard for this emergent style. They also keep a very good pale ale on full time, as well as a fairly straightforward kolsch.
Overall, Double Mountain is a great, small stop between Portland and eastern Oregon, an up-and-coming local bar, and a growing, impressive brewery. Give them some of your time.
