A deep dark black with a small brown head on the pour. Aroma is of toasted caramel malt, has some cacao essence and dark fruity esters. Taste same as aroma with some mild flavors of bourbon barrel aged wood notes and moderate bitter notes of cacao. A full creamy body, smooth with sweet bitter flavors and caramel malt on the end adds some balance to a flavorful brew. A very good, tasty and enjoyable brew.

Pours a dark brown, nearly that of motor oil. Off white head forms and recedes to a near perfect circle. The smell is of old bourbon barrel and char. The taste has chocolate, roasted malt, bitter smoke, and some bourbon.

A: very dark brown liquid... tan, messy suds - fine bubbles mostly, but some fish eyes as well

S: real bold espresso/coffee-cake notes ahead of the pack, but with a just as bold rich, dark chocolate cake right on its trail - just a fantastic 1-2 punch!... fine thread of fruity booze drilling up through the middle... you just know this is gonna be sweet and decadent...

T: strong vinous notes screaming through, pushing the charred silk to the sides... apparent wood notes and tannins in the finish, and perhaps a mild cool mint flavor in the aftertaste... the malt flavors are ground down to wet ash, lacking any curves... marginally sweet - mostly dark, burnt sugars

M: somewhat soft and mellow flow - the body is delicately slick and rubbery... the barrel aging seems to have dried what, on the nose, was measuring up to be a bit thicker and chewier... it just disappears in the finish - which isn't a bad thing - it's a dangerous thing... the booze doesn't get that warm either - more of a dull acidic tang from the dark malts seems to hang on

O: not all that bad!... very American in its lack of depth, but still well done and flavorful enough... I could knock back a couple, but would probably forget what its face looks like the next day

Appearance: Pours fudge brown with a nice bubble show that layers into a sturdy tan head; a few shards a lace stick to the glass

Smell: Chocolate, slightly charred oak, vanilla and Bourbon

Taste: Chocolate and Bourbon tones intermingle, with caramel and vanilla adding sweetness; in the mid-palate, the booziness increases; after the swallow, there are hints of coffee and oak that join the other flavors to produce a balanced finish

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with moderate carbonation; others have complained that it is too thin and while that may be true compared to the biggest beers in the category, it still works for this beer

Overall: This beer flies well under the radar but is really good; it is head and shoulders above the other beers I have tried from this brewery (some of which have been pretty good)

Thanks, sj3324, for the opportunity

Poured out into a tulip, about a finger of great looking mocha head. Smells like milk chocolate, some vanilla and faint dark fruits(raisins, fig). From the look and smell alone, really excited to try this. Tastes of creamy milk chocolate, a slight bitter chocolate undertone and an oaky finish. I'm not picking up any bourbon in this which depending on how you look at it could be a good thing or a bad thing. Mouth feel is on the thinner side with pretty good carb. Overall, I like my bourbon barrel beers to taste like bourbon. This fell flat for me in taste and mouth feel. More like a milk stout. I had such I hopes after the appearance and smell of it. Still worth trying, but below a top tier BA stout for me. Good comparison beer, Dragon's Milk.
