Poured into a Sam Adams perfect pint glass
Appearance: 1 inch head, brown in color, murky, moderate carbonation
Smell: earth, wheat, and char
Taste: wheat, chocolate, earth, and charred wood
Mouthfeel: sweet start with a slightly bitter end, moderate to high carbonation which is noticeable, medium/heavy bodied
Drinkability: About as earthy a beer as I have had. This one is an aquired taste. Not sure if I would get this one again, but Mayflower should get points for creativity.

Autumn Wheat Ale begins with rich, bread-like aromas, reminiscent of fresh loaves of whole wheat. Spicy notes accompany this, adding layers of pepper and light clove. A good layer of citrus (lemon, orange, grapefruit) rounds out the nose's primary flavors.
On the tongue, the brew brings an immediate toasted wheat and malt base, with not only the bready notes from the nose, but a noticeable, quasi-sour maltiness, somewhat akin to sourdough, or even rye. Brown sugars help somewhat soften this, and fruit esters (orange, banana) mixed with clove and lychee nut add further flavor. There's also a good toasted pecan base, as well as a hop hit, which brings tart grapefruit to the mix. The aftertaste is a continuation of the main mouthful, with emphasis on the rye and more sour flavors (though nothing approaching a Flemish ale). Mouthfeel is medium-light, and carbonation is medium.
Overall, this is quite good beer, and the rich, spicy, bready flavors make this a nice accompaniment to encroaching Fall weather. The beer does want for a slight boost in sugars to further combat the tart and sour flavors, but even without it, I'd go back for seconds.

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle. 2012 batch. Sampled on November 17, 2012.
The pour is a handsome looking garnet, dark amber with a whole lot of soapy tan head that slowly simmers down.
Wheat is played down on the nose considering it is an Autumn Wheat Ale. But there is a rich ester of dark, roasted malts and the slightest hint of hops.
The body is medium and smooth.
Like the aroma the taste is focused more on the dark, roasted caramel malts with a tickle of crispy hops leading to a low bitterness on the back side. But the wheat is hard to come by.
As a Dunkel this is quite good.

poured from a 12oz bottle into a pint glass.
a: much darker than expected. dark mahogany in color with a thin white head that settles into a thin lacing.
s: very nice malty aroma. sweet caramel with notes of biscuits. not bad.
t: sweet malty flavor. notes of caramel again and toasted bready malts. subtle hints of clove and banana (yeast). well balanced and drinkable.
m: smooth mouthfeel.
i had this last year and was not impressed. this year it seems to be much bolder and maltier. much better. recommended.

Well, it certainly is different.
Crystal clear dark brown with a smoothed out tan head. Consistent retention leaves a few lacey webs. Aroma is dry dirt, toasted pumpernickel and char. Has a vanilla/licorice barrel aged type of sweet going on too. Taste like German dark wheat bread with bitter drying in back. Mild caramel sweetness to balance the roasted elements. Spicy. Highly carbonated and fairly thin which is the only flaw in this beer.
Mayflower is one of my favorite breweries due to the inherent earthy flavors in all their beers and this one falls right in line. Don't see this style to often. Great, great campfire beer.

A- A dark brown, almost black, beer pours nicely into a pint glass with a large off-white cap forming. Head retention is very nice and thick lace forms right at the top of it. Webs of lace continue nicely down the glass leaving some large patches by the time the beer is finished.
S- Malts lend nutty, cocoa, coffee and roasted cracked grain notes to start off the aroma. Beyond that there are hints of butter, dark fruits and caramel. Reminiscent of roast-heavy Brown Ales. Loses some strength with time.
T- The heavy malt base makes up the majority of the flavor as well. Specialty grains lend notes of toasted nuts, cocoa, cereal grains, caramel and a hint of wheat. Yeast provides a shot of dark fruits, cloves, banana and a tiny bit of bread. Hops really don't have a role in this beer besides bittering balance.
MF- The body overall is light but the wheat adds a nice substance and silky, creamy feel which helps support the flavors. Carbonation is at a moderate level and there is just a hint of bitterness in the finish.
Drinks pretty much like an American Brown Ale with a pretty large dose of roasted specialty grains. Also reminds me just a bit of some European Dark Ales.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a US tumbler pint glass.
A: The beer is a medium brown color, with a large beige head that fades quickly and leaves a spotty lace on the glass.
S: The aroma contains wheat, bananas, chocolate, dark caramelized malts and a touch of hops.
T: The taste starts out bready with flavors of wheat and a hearty roasted malt character. Then some mildly sweet flavors of chocolate, caramel and bananas come in. The hops presence is mild but brings a little bit of balance. The after-taste is slightly bready.
M: A little crisp and a little smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.
D: Kind of flavorful, goes down ok, not too filling, mild kick, decent representation of style, everything I've had from mayflower so far has been pretty solid but this beer is mediocre at best.

pours a dark ruby brown with a nice sized khaki head, that fades to a film.
the aroma is sort earthy and rootbeer-y.
the taste has got some clean dark malty flavors(mostly chocolate), along with rootbeer and licorice it's also got some earthy hops going on with a moderate bitterness. the wheat seems to serve to lighten the beer and give it a little bit of that wheat tang.
the mouthfeel is just shy of medium bodied with moderate carbonation.
the drinkability pretty good, it's a pretty unique beer with some interesting things going on, but it lacks cohesion in my opinion. i can't see myself drinking more than a couple, the tang catches up with me. overall a good concept and pretty good execution.

A bubbly fizzy head of about 1/2 finger just hangs out for a while not really fading at all, the beer is much darker than I thought and it's like a super dark molasses brown almost black color. When the head eventually fades it leaves a light lacing on the sides of the glass.
The nose is loaded with wheat, dark wheat and sweet aromas, reminds me a lot of a doppelbock. Some dark roasty malts and various crystal malts, a nice toasty and roasty as well as sweet and lightly syrupy aromas. A little fruit as well, dark dried fruits, almost a concord grape like musty fruit aroma.
The taste comes off similar to a bock as well, but not as much as the nose. It has lots of heavy wheat flavors, semi sweet and even a little creamy. It also has a slight dry quality to it. A light toasty and roasty dark malt flavor with hints of dark fruits and juicy. A little chewy as well as the dark malts pick at me. There is a hint of minerality as well from the dark roasty malt flavors, and I think I get a hint of diacetyl with a little creamy buttery flavor, and a hint of biscuit. Also comes with a hint of a nutty flavor, almost a nutmeg like spiced nut flavor.
The mouth is creamy and medium to lighter bodied with lower but decent carbonation.
The finish comes mostly dry with a little lingering sweet syrupy flavor remnants. Some bitterness comes through as well, but just a little. More of the minerality flavors and more diacetyl. A slight dark wheat and bock flavor still, and hints of dark malts again. It gets very sticky and flemmy with the sticky flavors and dry feel combined.

12 oz bottle poured into a Westmalle chalice. An extra from drez77, thanks!
Appearance: Pours a deep brown, color reminds me of a darker maple syrup. (the fake stuff, not the real stuff) Red around the edges. A fingers worth of light brown head which fades quickly. Only a few blotches left after several seconds.
Smell: Roasted malts, very heavy malt aroma. Some coffee as well but not much, just a hint. A little bit of alcohol, molasses, sweetness too. Alcohol comes out more as the drink warms.
Taste: The initial taste is a smooth malty flavor, tastes a little watered down to me. The middle and end of the drink is bitter, overpoweringly bitter. The alcohol comes out more as the drink approaches room temp.
Mouthfeel: When I poured this, I thought the carbonation looked extremely high, but I would say this beer has a medium carbonation, which makes it very smooth. Medium to light body. Nothing syrupy about this beer, the flavors finish clean, except for the bitterness.
Overall: There are a couple things I am not crazy about when it comes to this beer. The first is the bitterness, the second is the carbonation. However, this beer really mellows out, and gets better as it warms.

Dome settled head that leaves some chunky clumps of lace. Ruby brown color where only the faintest of light passes.
The smell reminds me of tree bark. More conventionally, I detect some darker, dry malts with what I believe to be black patent.
Flavorful dark malts, light bittering hops. The body is quite thin with an average level of carbonation. I taste things similar to bark like sassafras. This is a dry beer with a very short aftertaste.

On-tap at Atwood's
A: The beer pours a dark amber/brown color with a big tan head.
S: The nose has a mild roast note with a nice hint of banana. There is some malt sweetness in the form of bread and toast. There might even be some mild clove along with a hint of chocolate.
T: Minimal banana flavor followed by lots of roast and toasted malt. Sweet bread malt flavors with a mild sweetness of chocolate. There is a little bit of bitterness, especially as the beer sits for a moment.
M: Medium in body with medium carbonation.
O: A pretty enjoyable beer, I thought. Though, I would have preferred more of a traditional dunkelweizen.
