A dark American wheat, eh? Well. Lots of creamy dark and toasty malts, brown sugar, very bready. As well as a yeasty kick. Though I do think it’s lacking a lot of body and doesn’t have enough lingering flavors in the finish. It seems like Mayflower almost always gets soooo close to delivering solid takes on certain styles but falls a little flat.

A - Pours a deep brown, nearly black, with a small bit of ruby in it if it catches the light just right. Clear, and difficult to tell if there is any carbonation. Little to no head that quickly recedes and leaves a tiny film around the edge of the glass.

A - Roastier than I expected from the marketing blurb on the label. I'm getting mostly coffee scents here.

T - Sweeter than I expected. Vanilla and chocolate to go with the strong roasty flavors that dominate the nose.

M - Disagree with the medium-bodied crowd on this one. I would say that it is lighter than medium, and while it is smooth, it tastes almost slick. Not a huge fan of this one. A little bite lingers at the end, which is nice.

O - Frankly, not what I was expecting based on the label. That said, it's not bad, particularly if you like the more coffee-focused flavors. I still enjoyed it somewhat.

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle. 2012 batch. Sampled on November 17, 2012.

The pour is a handsome looking garnet, dark amber with a whole lot of soapy tan head that slowly simmers down.

Wheat is played down on the nose considering it is an Autumn Wheat Ale. But there is a rich ester of dark, roasted malts and the slightest hint of hops.

The body is medium and smooth.

Like the aroma the taste is focused more on the dark, roasted caramel malts with a tickle of crispy hops leading to a low bitterness on the back side. But the wheat is hard to come by.
As a Dunkel this is quite good.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a Samuel Adams pint glass. Purchased at Wakefield Liquors in Wakefield, RI.

A- Pours a clear, amber-red body with a medium off white head that reduces slowly and leaves little lacing.

S- Caramel, toffee, bready-malt backbone.

T - Starts with a caramel, lighly roasted malt flavor and ends nutty with vanilla undertones. Aftertaste is piney and hoppy to balance the malt.

M- Medium carbonation, medium body. Crisp.

Overall a flavorful, nicely balanced autumn brew. It hit all the flavors that I like in an octoberfest. Worth a try.
