Very dark pour, with a VERY short-lived thin head of light brown foam. Not much carbonation at all.

Nice aroma, plenty of roast, some chocolate and a slight hint of licorice.

Much more hoppy than most stout brews and that's okay with me because I'm an IPA guy. I would have liked more body though, it was a bit on the thin side.

With that said, it was still a pretty tasty beer and I enjoyed it.

Pkg 12/02/10

Pours a pitch black with a beautiful, frothy, light brown head that goes absolutely nowhere. Smells of milk chocolate, some roastiness, lactose?, smells like sweet & roasty milk chocolate. Taste is more milk chocolatey goodness...this reminds me of a great milk/sweet stout. Rich and creamy mouthfeel...rolls around in your mouth. Almost airy. Very drinkable.

12 ounce bottle, label tell me "PKG 1/25/11"

Black and glistening in the glass. The head is a spectacular shade of dark creamy mocha, staying and sticking.

Muted nose of lite chocolate, mocha, roasted and just burnt malts.

Flavorful stout, smooth, easy flowing on the tongue and quite enjoyable sipper. More soft chocolate, cafe au lait, and sweetly roasted malts...drying hops on the rear end.

Nicely done, delicate, complex and generally yummy oatmeal stout.

Had on tap at RedBones Somerville

Appearance: black in color, minimal head, opaque

Smell: oats and roasted malt

Taste: coffee, oats, and some nut flavors

Mouthfeel: slightly sweet with a bitter backbone, heavy bodied, moderate carbonation, chewy

Drinkability: A very good offering from Mayflower. I could sit with a couple of these in the winter. They balance the oat and nut flavors just right.

Winter Oatmeal Stout begins with a rich, yeasty, bread-like nose, bearing more than a passing resemblance to unbaked wheat dough. Added to this are aromas of coffee, dark chocolate, chocolate malt, and caramel.

On the tongue, the beer is immediately dark, and obviously a well-made stout: chocolate malts mix with black coffees and light tobaccos with hints of ash. Caramelized brown sugars float around the edges, mixing with just a hint of bitterness from the hops that bites lightly on the soft palate. The oatmeals bring a good smoothness to the mouthfeel, but also add a light rolled oat flavor to the mix, which nicely complements the coffees and malts. Toward the end of the mouthful, as the sugars die off, the tobacco and ash flavors increase, and continue into the aftertaste, which lasts for a good while. Mouthfeel is a silky medium-light, and carbonation is medium to medium-high.

Overall, this is a good oatmeal stout, and well worthy of a try.

12 oz bottle poured into my Mayflower "pint" glass (its not really a full pint! Argh!) .

A - Brown thin head sits on a dark body. Slight highlights that are also a nice brown, not the ruby you see in many stouts.

N - Dark roasted malts all the way. Like a hearty piece of fresh bread. Very little hops. No spice no fruit.

T - Again, dark malts and roast. Chocolate and coffee but only just so. Not overpowering the malts. The oatmeal smooths it very nicely and adds some oaty sweetness.

M - Again, very smooth. Very fine carbonation. Delightful bitter after taste.

O - very good. Nice on a cold evening by the fireplace.

Cheers!

S: Big coffee notes and some chocolate roast. Very stout-like earthiness. Some fruity esters.

L: Black, tan head, creamy with good retention. Nice lacing.

T: Semi-sweet coffee malt leading to a dry roastiness. Finishes just a touch of sweetness.

M: Smooth creamy medium-full body. Medium-low carbonation.

A really solid oatmeal stout. Almost perfectly to style.

(12oz bottle courtesy of plondrigan!). Pours nearly black with khaki head. Aroma of coffee, caramel, milk chocolate. Nice! Taste is roasty bitter with sweetness emerging. There is also a little sour in this-in a good way. Medium bodied with creamy mouthfeel. Finish is slight roasty. Nice beer! Thanks, Paul!

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle dated 11/26/13. Sampled on January 16, 2014.

The pour is a deep dark black color with a short-lived light brown head. Impossible to see through even held to the light.

The aroma brings out the dark malts and oatmeal characters but in a downplayed sort of way. Also a bit of smoke and light sweetness.

The body is in the medium range with a smooth texture.

The taste has a smoky, creaminess in the malt character that abruptly explodes into an earthy bitter dryness that does not linger long. Oatmeal can also be found. It definitely has some very nice features to it.

12oz longneck.
A) Pours nearly opaque from the bottle. A nice finger thick, brown head on top. Settles to a nice lacing at the edge of the glass and on top. In the glass definitely an opaque body.
S) Subtle hints of dark cherries. Chocolate. Bready. Roasted grains.
T) Robust flavor. Smoky. Bitter chocolate. Hints of roasted coffee.
M) Full body. Smooth. Creamy. A nip of dryness in the finish.
D) I would definitely drink another one.

12oz bottle to pint glass. Sampled 4/5/11, packaged 1/25/11.

A: Pours with a one finger head somewhere between medium and dark brown in color. Diminishes rather quickly. The body is extremely dark, and might even be black. Absolutely no lacing.

S & T: The aroma is fantastic. Varied roasted malt qualities with chocolate dominating, a light hand of coffee mixed in, followed by hints of cookie and oats. Long lasting flavor, lightly sweet. The smell and taste are by far this beer's strongest attributes.

M: With carbonation on the soft side, plus 3 different types of oats in the grist, the mouthfeel comes across very creamy. Unfortunately the oats don't do anything to provide a fuller body or thicker texture (or help with head retention for that matter). After the glorious nose and rather good flavor that this beer provided, the mouthfeel was a big let down.

D: An above average oatmeal stout that could very easily become great with a few little tweeks. The appearance needs to be stronger and the mouthfeel more substantial. Other than that, I'm satisfied with this purchase.

dark brwon, nearly black coming through right away. Nice head of maybe an inch came up over the top but settled down quickly into just a thin film across the top. Decent side glass lacing as well.

The aroma deep with notes of coffee and cocoa, almost bittersweet with a light hoppiness undercutting the deeply roasted malts. Slight peat like aroma as it warmed up. The flavor started out a little off for the style with a health dose of smoked and roasted malts, not exactly at all what I was expecting out of it, but none the matter it was still very good. Rich notes of cocoa overlayed with a hint of dark bakers chocolate and an almost molasses like flavor swirling around in there as well. The finish though was coated with licorice like flavors and very wet, leaving you almost drooling, waiting for another sip to come through. Decent feel on this one, though if I am being honest, towards the end of the session it did start to feel a little bit flat on me, but maybe it was me. Still though, more then decently sessionable and I would have no issues with drinking this again.
