I wanted to try something different for the warmer weather. I picked this up and said "what the hell!" . It poured a very hazy pale yellow color with a white head. Right away off of the smell I could pick up the pineapple juice and the citrus odor. The taste was overly sweet. This is like a shandy, a style I am not too fond of. The beer and fruit juice mix just doesn't please me. It isn't for me. It was drinkable, a little by refreshing for a hot day, but overall, I thought it to be Overly sweet and just too much pineapple favor and taste. Where's the beer in this???!!! (585 characters)

Hala Kahiki Pineapple Beer brewed by Rivertowne Pourhouse, with an ABV 4.80% This brew pours out a light cloudy amber color, with a nice white head. The smell is sweet with pineapple. You also pick up on a hit of grains and malts. Now for the taste, it is odd. There is some sweetness, but a odd aftertaste to this brew. The mouthfeel is sweet but Hala Kahiki Pineapple has a odd nasty aftertaste. The aftertaste just kills this brew. I was expecting more out of this rivertowne brew. Overall I'm giving Hala Kahiki Pineapple Beer a 2.5 out 5 (548 characters)

- can. pineapple beer. natural pineapple juice added.

A: Palest of straw pour produces a monstrous white pearl head of two fingers, which lapses rather quickly leaving splashy lace marks on the vessel. Very light misty haze, with a dense nature of macro-effervesce rising at a good rate.

S: The pineapple is fresh and fruity upon the pour, fairly dominant at arms reach. Inside the glass a more natural, warm pineapple aroma, lightly tart with some funky straw, barnwood and pineapple leave.

T: The pineapple juice definitely takes over the beer aspect. A pineapple shandy? Lightly tart, funky warm, cooked pineapple slices like you would have on a ham. Fruity aspects with a strange apple sauce bite on the swallow.

M: Wheaty, pineapple feel on the mouthful, mid-body depth, carbonation feels much lower then the visual, ok overall.

O: Drinks like a pineapple shandy or wine cooler. Seemed a bit odd at times. Its a pineapple beer, and as much as i like pineapple, i like it better when derived from citra hops and not from pineapple juice addition. A C- range beer at the days end, with a strange tart pineapple finish that may discourge next sips let alone second servings. (1,186 characters)

12 oz. can into craft tumbler

A- Pale yellow and hazy. Fizzy white head, with poor retention. Looks like fizzy pineapple juice.

S- Lots of pineapple, with a very faint toasty malt background.

T- The beer characteristic comes out a little more in the flavor. Still pineapple the big player, subtle malt in the background.

M- Hops seem to dry this a little bit, mellowing the overwhelming sweetness of pineapple juice. Light body and wet feel. Not even a real pineapple tang to it either.

O- It's not unpleasant tasting, but I would call this "beer-flavored pineapple juice". Very sweet, very light on any beer flavor; it sure seems like there is more juice in here than beer. The fact that it is mixed as well. At least age it on pineapple... (748 characters)

Appearance is a cloudy pale straw color with little head. The nose is definitely pineapples. This flavor profile is dominated by pineapples and the finish – you guessed it – also has a pineapple essence to it. If you like weak beer with pineapple juice added, this offering is for you. As for anyone else, you might as well skip this novelty. (346 characters)

Pours a clear light straw color with an 1/8th inch head, kinda looks like a coors light. It does leave a few lines of lace on the glass though. The aroma is moderate with smells of pineapple and other tropical fruits present. The taste follows suit, the flavor is like a canned pineapple drink with the slightlest hint of a hop bite buried deep at the end. The mouthfeel is light moderately caronbated and crisp. Overall it isn't awful, but it is a one trick pony. It is pineapple straight forward and that is about it. It is worth a try on a hot day, but a try would probably do it. (583 characters)

I can safely say I've never had a beer quite like this one. The tap lists suggests that the beer is actually aged on fresh pineapple. I couldn't resist giving it a try.

It very much resembles a glass of frothy pineapple juice; maybe a bit deeper in color. Very cloudy, even milky looking, with a slight amber, golden yellow. Like a smoothy maybe. The head is off white and receding quickly to a frothy ring.

The nose is all fresh pineapple. Not hoppy pineapple, just straight pineapple juice. A little bit of caramel graininess but that's about it. It's actually very difficult to detect much else. Smells nice but more like a tropical cocktail than a beer. Certainly an experience, and not an unpleasant one at that.

Again, almost straight pineapple. Sweet and tropical. It definitely has that fresh, sweet, tangy/acidic flavor that fresh cut pineapple has rather than syrupy pineapple juice. With that being said, unless someone told me this is a beer I might not be sure. Not a great deal of malt character and no hops to speak of. There is some mild vanilla and a toasty/bready note to speak of but they are both far overshadowed by the pineapple.

Slick and juicy with some definite pulpy texture. Low to moderate carbonation with a bit of a chalky feel at one point but not undesirable. Tart and acidic throughout.

Drinkability? I'd say on the lower end. The acidic sweetness would burden my palate quickly. Although I'm not sure of the ABV, I'd assume it's low to moderate. Certainly an interesting wildcard of a brew but nothing I'd try more than once. (1,566 characters)

12oz. can courtesy of HopFace. Served in a shaker pint. Pours a pale yellow with a hazy clarity and a thin white head that quickly dissipates into nothing. Nose is a bit reminiscent of pineapple soda. Taste expresses some pineapple notes, but there's a prevailing artificial sweetener character and a hint of yeast. Mouthfeel is light in body with a light, effervescing carbonation and a slight acidity. Overall, not bad but nothing special. (447 characters)

On tap at Pinocchio's.

Straw-yellow pour, clear, with no head...maybe a few stray bubbles rising from the bottom of the glass. Looked like a flat Miller. In the nose, pineapple juice and raw grains. The taste was pretty much the same, with unripe pineapple juice being the dominant flavor, and a steady husky graininess coming in a close second. Not much else going on. Light body, thin mouthfeel that wasn't helped by the extremely low carbonation. I didn't care for this one at all, though it wasn't completely undrinkable. (526 characters)

Taste is pineapple juice, wheat, sugarcane, and slight breadiness. It is an interesting stab at a fruit that I do not often see get added to beer. The pineapple juice blends more with the beer taste as the beer warms. The sugar levels are reminiscent of a non-alcoholic beer, This is one I am glad I tried. I might like it if I lived in a warmer climate, but I do not see myself getting it again. (401 characters)

12 oz. can poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Hazy yellow. Miniscule head. Nothing on the surface after a while.

Smell - Pineapple. Lots of pineapple. Some vanilla creaminess.

Taste - Sweet pineapple. And even more pineapple. A touch of tang and vanilla. The sweetness is a bit like aspartame.

Mouthfeel - Sweet. Medium low carbonation.

Overall - It's just pineapple. And sweetness. (391 characters)

Served on tap into a mug.

A- Poured a very clear and pale straw color, some minimal carbonation was visible, white soapy head dissipated instantly and left no lace.

S- Smells like a can of goya pineapple juice.

T- Tastes like canned pineapple juice, some earthiness like an unripe pineapple, and that's really it.

M- Prickly carbonation, dry, lighter bodied, and refreshing.

O- It was refreshing and quenching enough on a hot day, but totally one dimensional. It was like drinking a can of pineapple juice or soda. (519 characters)

Its about what you would expect; Kind of like a shandy, but not in a bad way.
Look- was a little light
Smell- PINEAPPLE bread if there is such a thing
Taste- Bready pineapple.
Feel- Carbonation is a bit much, but not overbearing.
Overall-Great for a hot day or something that non beer drinkers will like. lawnmower beer that you can down and go back to cutting. (363 characters)

Served on tap in a pint glass

Appearance – The beer is served a straw yellow color with a tiny white head. The head fades quite fast leaving a small amount of lace on the sides of the glass

Smell- The aroma is heaviest of a pineapple which largely dominates the smell. Mixed with it however are some detectable notes of some tangerine and banana.

Taste – The taste begins very sweet upfront and remains that why throughout. The sweet is largely of pineapple juice with some lighter amounts of a tangerine, orange, and tropical fruit flavors of papaya and banana. Toward the end the pineapple flavor grows even stronger in intensity giving a very pineapple juice like flavor to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is very thin and watery giving the brew a rather refreshing taste when mixed with the sweeter flavors of pineapple and other tropical fruits. The higher level of carbonation that is present is very nice for the sweet and crisp taste of the brew with the combination of carbonation and thickness making for a rather refreshing feel overall.

Overall - The brew has a nice pineapple juice flavor, but is almost too much like pineapple juice for me. It is sweet and refreshing, but not really what I am looking for in a beer. It tastes very much like a sweet hard pineapple juice (1,318 characters)

Cloudy yellow color with no head. Served in a plastic cup.

No hops. Smells like straight pineapple juice. Maybe a hint of wheat malts. Works for a fruit beer.

Tastes like pineapple juice. No noticeable alcohol. Obviously, a sparkling pineapple juice. It's delicious, but it's barely beer. There's a light spicy hop presence, after all.

Feels like sparkling pineapple juice. Creamy with an effervescent bite.

Kudos for pineapple. Tried and true. Pretty ridiculous, really. (475 characters)

12oz can with no canning date. Poured into an unlabeled snifter 7/13/2014.

A- Mostly clear, though slightly hazy, light straw-yellow body with a one finger white head that disappears fairly quickly. Looks like filtered pineapple juice, I suppose.

S- Smells slick and sweet, just like what I would expect freshly squeezed pineapple juice. If you cut up some pineapples and bring them to work in a tupperware to eat as a snack, this smells like the residual juices in the container. And a touch of yeast. No complexity, just that nice pineapple sweetness.

F- Starts tasting more like a pineapple beer than pineapple juice. Crisp, slightly tart but mostly sweet pineapple juice mixes in with an earthier but still sweet pale malt with a touch of yeast spices. Quite sweet, but in a refreshing fruit manner, not a sugary ice frosting manner.

M- Thinner in body but not watery. Packed with plenty of flavour and carbonation. Easy drinker with a pineapple (what else?) finish.

O- Haven't had a pineapple beer up to this point, but this is pretty much what I would expect out of a pineapple beer. This is a well-executed beer, even if it's more of a novelty summer session beer. (1,177 characters)

Served on tap at the Monroeville brewpub. An ale aged on pineapple.

A: The ale looks like pineapple juice, a bright yellow color that seems out of place for a beer. The only potential difference between this beer and juice is that the juice has pulp in it.

S: At first nothing but midway through the pint, the pineapple sweetness comes through with a vengeance. This is not a hoppy bitter pineapple, rather it is sugary sweet pineapple.

T: Wow, that's a lot of pineapple! The sugary sweetness dominates every aspect of the taste, coating the tastebuds from start to finish. I'd say more but all that matters is pineapple. The description on the menu doesn't lie.

M: Sugary juice with a minimal amount of alcohol (4.8% per the menu). The pineapple is unusual, out of place with its sweetness but it doesn't deviate from the description, an ale aged on pineapples.

D: Low alcohol and unusual taste. One is good, the other is not so good. I like the low booze and am intrigued by the pineapple sweetness. Not a go-to, but a good one-time drink. (1,046 characters)

Well this could have been worse. Fruit beers, though usually refreshing and often interesting, are always precariously to much like a soda pop. This one walks that fine line and just barely stays on the fair side of that.

It looks like a pale ginger ale. The color is light yellow and it has more of a champagne fix than a beer head, bit odd that bad? The aroma is extremely weak, but at least it isn't bad. It increases with warmth.

The taste is sweet and refreshing but still of beer. There is a little yeast taste, like a what, but just barely. It is not annually to your taste. The aftertaste is sweet as well.

Overall, this is an interesting, refreshing drink. (671 characters)

12 ounce can into pint glass, no canning date. Pours moderately hazy/cloudy golden straw color with a small foamy white head with decent retention, that reduces to a thin lace cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings on the glass, with some moderate streaming carbonation. Aromas of lightly tart juicy pineapple, pear, light banana, wheat, bread, light honey, and light grass. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance of pineapple fruit and pale malt sweetness; with decent strength. Taste of slightly tart juicy pineapple, pear, light banana, wheat, bread, light honey, and light grass. Minimal bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of pineapple, pear, light banana, wheat, bread, light honey, and light grass on the finish for a good bit. Nice balance and solid robustness of pineapple fruit and pale malt sweetness; with zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and medium bodied; with a very smooth and lightly syrupy mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with zero warming present after the finish as expected of 4.8%. Overall this is a nice session fruit beer. Good balance and solid robustness of pineapple fruit and pale malt sweetness; and very smooth to drink. Nice amount of authentic fruit flavor without feeling watery; a nicely enjoyable offering. (1,308 characters)

Review from notes taken on 7/31/10.

On tap at the brewpub this beer appears a cloudy yellow color with a thin whisp of white bubbles for a head. Spotty amounts of lace cling to the glass.

The aroma of this brew is a high concentrated level of fruity pineapple. Very sweet smelling and wow is it bold. I have never had a fruit smell in a beer that completely dominated any other aspect of the nose that might try to come out.

The flavor of this brew has some pineapple sweetness upfront which luckily is not as dominating as the aroma. There is a supporting role of fresh grainy malt that is the first indication of this actually being a beer and not just juice.

Slightly watery in the feel, there is a light prickly level of carbonation felt on the tongue. I didnt think I would be able to drink the entire glass once I smelled this but after taking a sip, it wasn't that bad. (880 characters)

Rivertowne Pourhouse "Hala Kahiki"
12 oz. can

One of the most charming beers I've had in a while. It's a pineapple-flavored beer and nothing else, nor does it intend to be. It's sweetish but not too sweet, and very subtly tart - think of it as a kind of sweet and extra fruity witbier. It tastes like pineapple, apples, and delicate sugar. It's not bitter, but neither is it cloying. Overall, it's a unique, refreshing, and enjoyable fruity ale. Worth trying, and maybe even worth seeking out. (494 characters)

Pours a cloudy pale yellow with a small white head. In the aroma, citrus pineapple juice. In the taste, pineapple juice with a wheat like note. A smooth and medium bodied mouthfeel, with a semi dry pineapple citrus in the aftertaste. A bit acidic, but big fruity and tasty. (273 characters)

Appearance: So it pours out of the can looking like pineapple juice, with a modest, but frothy, head; dots of lace

Smell: Smells like pineapple juice; just a little bready, too

Taste: A little bready, but mostly sweet pineapple juice

Mouthfeel: Light bodied and somewhat watery; low to moderate carbonation

Overall: Is it a beer or a shandy - not sure, but it is refreshing (382 characters)

Rivertowne Pineapple Under the Sea

Shares a similar appearance to carbonated pineapple juice, a bit hazy, small short livid head and active carbonation bubbles rising to the top. The smell was sweet, and pineappley. In the flavor, more fresh pineapple juice, with a wheat malt base. Very refreshing and fresh tasting. Sweetness is there but held in check for the most part and not cloying. Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied and a little sticky. Overall, a nice brew, and proof pineapple ales can be quite satisfying. (519 characters)

12 oz can.

Pours a light hazy lemony gold. Sugar white lacing for a head.

Smells of a light barley malts and notable pineapple sweetness.

Light grassy malts, lemon citrus and pineapple juice sweetness.

Medium to light body with a fizzy carbonation on the roof of the mouth.

Surprisingly tasty and refreshing, would be a great summer session brew. Will be a little on the fruity side for some, but worth trying, especially if you like pineapple, which you can truly taste in this beer. (491 characters)
