Wow, this site gets so much wrong. This is a classic, well ok better than classic, English Style Barleywine and about as far from an American Barleywine as one could get.

Sample via 1.5 year (or more) old bottle pour at the Charlie and Jake's brewpub with a big thanks to the assistant brewer for supplying the sample. It pours amber-brown with copper edges and tiny bits of sediment along the bottom all supporting what amounts to . . . well really no head at all. The aroma sends out smooth notes of dates, prunes and raisins along with a nice layer of caramel candy as well as a bit of booze at the end of the draw. The taste is smooth and starts with prunes, figs, dates and raisins then it picks up a modest amount of caramel candy, molasses and sweet maltiness. This just melds together into a very pleasing finish and seeming like a smooth subtle 9% ABV and not the massive 15%+. Man, this is only going to get better over the next several years. Fantastic English barleywine right here in FL.

At the brewpub, based on Josh Oakes recommendation. I think the 15% label is too low. When they say its 30 proof, its a hint. On the other side you do not taste the booziness until it knocks you over. Unfiltered, it reminds me of a Belgian strong ale. Yeast there, adding to above average mouthfeel. Served somewhat too cold.

How could this be 15%? Dangerous stuff here.

A - It pours a rich brown hue, somewhere between mahogany and cola. At 15%, this sucker has a respectable head, too.

S - The nose has some BSDA characteristics, along with EBW nuances as well. Honey, dark stone fruit, clove, raisin-fig-date; these are some of the prominent nuances in the nose. Hops are not impactful, contributing balance but not discerible contributions of character. Notice I did not include booze in the description.

T - The taste is totally in-line with the nose, and is again reminiscent of EBW and/or BSDA. There is no burn, this actually drinks easy. The flavors are interesting, subtle and well-melded.

M - Silky and smooth.

D - I would guess 8 or 9%, never 15%. So dangerously drinkable.

Double Trouble Barleywine pours a hazy brown color with a tan head. The aroma is banana, this smells like a hefeweizen. It tastes like banana as well. Alcohol is pretty noticeable. I sure managed to drink this pretty fast anyway. Probably a bit better than a lot of their offerings (and definitely higher in alcohol too).
