Not much of a head and it settles to rim bubbles. No lace. Dark brown color but sunlight does pass through.
Dark malt aromas but there's no chocolate or mocha to the nose.
Dark grain flavors. I would describe this as being closer to a brown ale. Again, no deeper flavors of chocolate or coffee. The body is thin for the style. Pedestrian.

Arrives a nice dark brown with a very small tan head. No retention here though.
Smell is malt, hops and leather. Decently balanced but not much complexity.
Taste is the same as the nose: malt, hops and leather. Balance stays good.
Weak, watery-ish body with light effervescence. At best a decent beer. More of a thirst quencher, lawnmower beer than a real porter. This used to be their best year-round offering. I hope that isn't still true. The seasonal stuff used to be better, maybe I'll try one of those next time.

A: Pours a rich deep dark brown / black hue with a nice solid tan head. Okay retention with a smattering of lace.
S: Nice roasted aromas with notes of chocolate and coffee.
T: Simple yet good flavors. Nicely roasted with loads of chocolate malt. Hints of dark roasted coffee poke through, but this one is all about the chocolate.
M: Medium in body, smooth, tasty.
D: A real simple porter but I really liked it. The IPA is the most aggressive thing SBC is doing, but I think this one is the most enjoyable.

On draught at the SBC, 03/07/08. 6% abv, 28 IBUs. Deep brown, practically black - I'm going to call it black - with a thin ring of off-white lacing. Coffee is strong in the nose - espresso, chocolate liquor, mocha, and not many toasted notes. Burnt, earthy flavors present in the mouth, however, with a lot of strong coffee and chocolate notes as well. This beer was again undercarbonated (which most of the other beers here were), but the taste was enough to make up for it. I ordered another one of these, if I recall.

Served in a pint glass with no head... bartender needs to give a bit more of an aggressive pour. Swish.. swish and I encouraged a little to give me some aroma. The beer was ebony in color.
The nose was weak... but contained roasted malt and sweet caramel.
Taste: Pretty standard really... some smokey taste to compliment a roasty, somewhat bitter finish.
MF: Too thin... not robust by any stretch. A bit fizzy for my taste.
Drinkability: Not bad... Nothing objectionable.... but nothing outstanding either.

Drank 7/12/06
This was my one of my favorites of the night. Nice almost black body with very nice head retention and lace. Slight caramel smell with a bit of hops. Taste was very light but still had some molasses/carmelized to balance with the bitter hops. Mouthfeel was a bit light with above average carbonation making the backside of the beer feel weak; though a dash of smokiness saves it. Very balanced beer overall.

Maybe it was the down-to-the wire basketball game on one of the brewpub's many TV screens, but there was something exciting about this porter. Very dark brown, almost black color consistent with its name. A little roast in the nose. Very pleasant. A much richer roasted palate. Very well made. Dark spices and dark fruits, with the right amount of bitterness to balance. Creamy consistency. Finishes with a sligtly sweet maltiness and a lingering whiff of smoke. Pass me another Midnight Pass please.

Aroma is strangely sweet like sugared prunes. Black with a smallish mocha head. Roastiness is mild and there are odd raisin notes. Definitely a lot of espresso flavor in the aftertaste, but the carbonation seems much too low for porter. The flavor is good it just loses some appeal because the low of carbonation gives it a stale feeling.
