At the brewpub, this was poured into a nonic pint glass. The appearance was a dark brown color with a light transparency about it. Carbonation could be seen rising to fill a one finger white foamy head that dissipated within less than thirty seconds leaving some foamy lacing in a messy way. The smell had a semi-sweet dry roasty nuts, caramel, toffee and a light cocoa combining into a light sharp resin. The taste took all of those previously mentioned flavors to combine initially and then as it warms more resin starts to kick into a decent little hop bite. Lingering resin and nuts lead into the aftertaste and finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light on the body so it becomes pretty sessionable. Carbonation comes across fairly smooth and allows the resin to be the bitterness over my tongue. Overall, I say this was a pretty good American Brown Ale, hopheads might even like it.

We have been visiting the Albany Pump Station brewpub once a year for a good many years. Our recent visit turned up the information that this place has a new brewer. He apparently deemed it necessary to tinker with the recipe for their flagship Kick-Ass Brown, which was their one and only outstanding brew and one that was consistently good over many years. The "new" brown ale retains the name of its predecessor, but is substantially different: it is grainier, scratchier, much more malt and less hoppy and smooth. It has declined greatly in overall taste, feel, and drinkability. It no longer kicks ass. And I no longer have a reason to visit this brewpub. Another great beer has bitten the dust.
