12 fl oz brown bottle; served in a nonic.

Pours a hazy, dark oak beneath a creamy off-white head with good retention as a sheet. Patchy lacing with pretty typical strength.

Bright citrus aromas: lemon, lime; with hints of tropical fruit and pine. Faint biscuity malt; lightly toasted with a hint of diacetyl.

Toasted biscuity malt; very bready that lasts throughout the entire sip. Faint notes of citrus and pine, but a more pronounced, spicy floral hop flavor. An earthen bitterness with a musty, earthenly-bitter aftertaste.

Medium in body; creamy malt that is derailed texturally by the rough and muddy hop profile.

A very pleasant aroma that doesn't ever translate in flavor. Interesting, but the earthen flavors are a little off for me.

Bottled on 8/26/13.

Poured from the 12 oz. bottle into a Samuel Adams nonick.

a: Deep clear ruby, topped by a tall tan head which receded very slowly to heavy surface foam and extensive lacing.

s: Balanced malt and pine hops.

t: Same flavor profile as the aroma. Fairly dry finish with slight grassy notes in the aftertaste.

m: Medium, fairly tangy.

o: A good harvest, more heft to it and better head retention than some, and it had a bit of the vegetal tang in it which to me distinguishes a good harvest ale.

A - Fills my pilsner flute perfectly with about two fingers of bubbly head that recedes fairly slowly, leaving some clumpiness on the top, and thin lines of lacing on the sides of the glass. The beer is brown in color with slight shades of copper or orange, depending on the light.

S - I'm getting mostly tropical smelling hops with some sweet malt undertones. Truly a nice smell, but doesn't really match the appearance.

T - It's a nice mix of nut and roasty flavors with the citrusy hops layered on top. It's a nice mix of flavors, but I'm conflicted because I don't feel like they go together. So I enjoy the flavor, but am confused by it.

M - Pretty thin, I expected a little more body. It has a refreshing finish, but doesn't finish clean. Almost feels like a summer beer, but has that roasty fall finish. Another confusing element.

O - While I find some of the flavor and feel combinations questionable, it is certainly a very drinkable beer, and one that I am enjoying right now. No buyers remorse on this 12-pack. it actually is pretty nice for September here in Mass, with warm summer-like days and cooler nights. Give it a shot, but don't expect greatness.

12 oz bottle was poured into a pint glass.

Appearance: This beer poured a one finger head that reduced to a thin layer. It is a copper brown color with a little clarity and bubbles can be seen coming up the glass.

Smell: Toasted and caramel malts with faint citrus hops.

Taste: Same as above. Very balanced and enjoyable.

Mouthfeel: Smooth and chewy, a little hop bitterness, light to medium bodied, and medium carbonation.

Overall: A nice fall beer for New England.

Poured from a bottle into a tumbler pint, the beer is a dark, slightly hazed, brown-copper coloring with unfiltered particulates suspended throughout. A white, sparse film coats the surface and forms a ring around the surface. Aromas of subtle sweet caramel and a grainy overtone, with a slight roasting to it. Really had to sniff around a bit to find much of anything. Flavors are rich and roasted, with some pumpkin and a lot of spicing. Cinnamon, nutmeg, and all-spice throughout the rich, sweet flavors. Roasty and warming despite the lower ABV. Flavors get a bit cloying towards the end, but not overpowering. Grain profiles come through fairly strong towards the end of the palate. Some hops present in the aftertaste, providing a bitter and resiny touch. Muddled flavors towards the end of the palate, with a caramel sweet and grainy aftertaste. Sweet, slightly cloying finish, with the hops being overpowered. Interesting flavors, and strong for the style, but it just misses in a couple of different spots. Not bad, though.
