Can't believe I never reviewed this New England classic before now as it used to be a regular in the rotation when I started reviewing beer.
Had not had one for a few years since moving to a different town where most local stores don't carry it. Booo!!!! But glad I stumbled upon it at another local store that will become a regular now.
Pitch black body with a brown frothy head looks very appetising to the eye - some faint garnet highlights when held up to the light. Coffee and chocolate aromas fill the nose. Lots of coffeeish flavor with chocolate as a background note - maybe a bit more black patent acridness than I remember in the past, but it was nicely offset by the sweet malt profile and thick, creamy mouthfeel. The dry finish despite the sweet malty body made it so drinkable. Hard to have just one.
Truly world class imo - and after all these years, still satisfying to a jaded beer geek that is hard to please. Its a shame that not all beer stores recognize this as one of New England's best and would rather attempt to sell some other stout from far away instead.
