Pours a frothy mocha colored one finger head over a solid black body. Head recedes in due time leaving sheets of lace. Aromas of roasted barley and espresso. Roasted barley and coffee are present in the flavor as well, along with a hint of chocolate. Mild sweetness. Citric hop bitterness is noticeable, not overpowering, and at just the right level to provide balance. The oatmeal provides a full body with a remarkably smooth mouthfeel. Slightly dry finish.
This stout is so smooth it feels like you are drinking a frappe. Theres a nice assortment of complementary flavors that achieve complexity without screaming for attention. Another outstanding ale from Ipswich.
