Re-reviewed,

Poured from bottle into goblet.

A: Good thick creamy darker colored head that fades slowly, nice layered lacing, pitch black color.

N: Nose brings roasted malts out front, roasted barley is the big part of this, maybe overpowering a bit with a touch of campfire smoke, then some then some dark chocolate, powdered cocoa, and tons of chewy oats, oatmeal, toasted oats, etc.

T: Taste brings more roasty flavors, roasted malts, bitterness, a little acrid and astringent almost. Then more chocolaty, dark chocolate, powdered, little chalky, toasted cocoa pebbles almost, light toasted grain. Then lots of oats, oatmeal, creamy, toasted oats especially. nice cocoa laden oatmeal. Finish is a bit more earthy bittering hops, acrid over roasted malts lingering, little creamy oats, chocolate, and spicy hop finish, fairly dry but sticky.

M: Creamy and rich with good carbonation.

Overall not bad, but not the best. The bitterness gets a bit astringent and over bitter with both spicy earthy hops, and the acrid roasted malt going overboard a bit. Chewy, lots of oats, nice chocolate cocoa but a bit powdered, little too roasty overall.

No visible "bottled on" date.

Poured from the 12 oz. bottle into a Samuel Smith English tulip pint.

a: Black with slight ruby highlights at the bottom when seen through light. Inch tall tan head receded to thick even surface foam and dense lacing.

s; Dark chocolate

t: Black coffee and dark chocolate forward followed by a building hop bite which seemed to penetrate the sides of the tongue. Bitter finish.

m: Medium and quite smooth. Some carbonation tingle.

o: A very good stout, though less sweet than an oatmeal might be. Gives the impression of being a modern American oatmeal stout due to the relative bitterness. A bit surprising from Ipswich/Mercury, which I think of as leaning towards British styles.

Pours opaque with a one finger head and a light lacing. This beer smells great. It has a coffee aroma with subtle oatmeal notes. Smooth is an understatement. This beer goes down like a glass of milk. Outstanding flavor. Complex but not overbearing. Its flavor resembles that of a chocolate shake. This is possibly the best oatmeal stout I've ever had. Try this beer.
