This was my first Oatmeal Atout and I thought this beer was good, but not what I expected.

The Apperance was pitch black with a small dark tan head that dissipates after a while.

The smell was strong with chocolaty and coffee notes.

The Taste was like the smell for the most part. Very chocolaty and coffee like, but I did not get a big Oatmeal flavor like I would expect from an OATMEAL stout.

The mouthfeel was generally smooth and overall its a pretty drinkable beer. Seems a little big to be just 7%, but a good beer none the less.

Love the look of this beer. A gorgeous soft, bubbly, light (but not too light) brown sits atop the black brew. Some lacing clings to the glass. The nose brings milk chocolate, roasted coffee, nuts, oats, and a hint of vanilla. The taste doesn't bring as much of the smell to the table. You get hints of cocoa and coffee and roasted malts. Each sip goes down smooth with a silky mouthfeel. Sticky on the lips too. Overall, a good example of the style and can see why it is considered a classic in the area.

Hmmm, this beer has been sitting on the shelf for eight months (Bottled on 07/12/2013) and it’s pretty low in ABV. Still, it’s unfiltered, so the extra time on yeast may have produced some interesting flavors. Plus, it’s a classic that you can’t get it my home state – picking it up was an easy choice. Cheers!

A: Pours incredibly foamy; a mountain of creamy tan head rises up above a pitch black body. After about five minutes the head has finally collapsed to a half-inch of retention, leaving an unbroken layer of thick lacing on the inside of the glass. Classic look.

S: This is not a creamy, chocolaty nose. Instead, what you get is a balanced blend of hickory smoked meat, light-roast coffee, chestnut, and a touch of pretzely malt. Like a pub beer, it’s nuanced and traditional.

T: Mild chocolate and mineral water flavors blended with a crisp bitterness of roasts and hops. Warm, slightly nutty tastes of pecan, maple syrup, Hershey’s chocolate, and brown sugar-cinnamon oatmeal provide a modest base, but are soon overtaken with a bitter smoke and hop character, a prickly upswing of dry pine, campfire, herbal sassafras, and a salty yeast taste of brine. Aftertaste continues along that path: dry and grassy, the hops find a quick peak of crisp bitterness but die out rather slowly.

M: The carbonation is strong, as expected – the cap nearly flew off when I cracked the bottle – but in a rich, silky way; think cappuccino foam, not champagne fizz. The body’s wonderfully creamy, as well, adding depth to a brew that’s already bigger than its ABV.

O: A classic for a reason – what a satisfying, drinkable beer. The call-and-response between the creamy sugars and the bitter hops and roasts makes this interesting enough to stay satisfying throughout, and that doesn’t seem too typical in a low-alcohol beer. I thought that there would be some noticeably dull flavors in here due to the age of this bottle…turns out, that’s not at all true. Great beer.
