750ml corked & caged bottle poured into a Piraat tulip.

Pours a hazy amber with a very thin light yellow head and some light lacing. Nose is funky and tart with some sweet maltiness.

Taste is very funky and sweet, not too much hops or bitterness. It's got a nice funky taste to it. It's got a decent full mouthfeel with good carbonation.

750ml bottle into glass chalice.

$12.99 / ea.

A: Cloudy oxidized copper body with not so much a head, as strong fizz. The sides of the glass are covered in small bubbles, not unlike Sprite.

S: A bit funky, which is different from the first bottle I tried, but not unpleasant. Sour aroma indicates a possible lacto infection, but it fits with the style. Belgian yeast pokes through a bit, but it was definitely more noticeable in the previous bottle.

T: Definitely lactic sour and a bit of fusel alcohol, but nothing serious. Red fruit notes and a bit of caramel. Much different beer this time around but awesome in its own way.

M: Very dry, and highly carbonated. Exceptionally crisp.

D: I'm not normally a fan of sour beers, but this one really works for me. Very crisp, not much aftertaste, and interesting (to say the least). 1.5L? Easy!

O: Saint Somewhere only brews 250-bbl. per year, so I'll have to try a few more bottles to get an idea of how this one ranges. In any case, I have enjoyed both bottles in completely different ways.

[Suggested Glassware: Tulip Glass]

The pour was a murky medium brown with a slight reddish hue and an average (1-2 finger) light brown fizzy head that dissipated in a matter of seconds, leaving behind very light puddling with a very small collar and light runny lacing.

The aroma was musty and tart with a mild grain malt and a strong funky Brett yeast with notes of green apple, pears and a strong berry odor.

The taste was tart right off the bat, with a big dose of sweet fruit which lasted throughout and had a nice sour ending. The flavor stuck with you for a good while letting the fruity sour taste linger on the taste buds.

Mouthfeel was just a tad past light in body and dry in texture with an extremely fizzy carbonation.

Overall this brew is right up my alley lately, tons of flavor and a strong sour finish. It is also made in my home town of Tarpon Springs, FL. Guess I will just have to visit this brewery...

A - Poured a dark copper color with a white head that fades quickly to nothing

S - Smells like a brett funky sweet white wine

T - The funkiness from the brett comes out first the the fruit and win flavors come out

M - This beer has a medium body with high carbonation to it

D - This is a very enjoyable beer I'm really liking whats going on here I could sip on this one for a good long time worth getting your hands on a bottle to try sometime

Pours a translucent muddy brownish copper with very foamy off-white head that retained for a very long time. Tart, like apple cider, plums and cherries- slightly spicy as well. Fruity esters dominate the tongue, even more so than many saisons, but the yeast strains add a nice touch of clove, allspice, and other complexities. Medium body, with sharp carbonation, and a tart aftertaste leading into a boozy finish. I was once skeptical of trying this style, but this and a select few others have helped me broaden my beer palate and be able to enjoy things I never would've dared to try before.

A: pours hazy amber that turns to murky as more of the dregs are stirred up. A fair color but not that would be expected from a belgian saison.

S: belgian yeasts, funk/brett, raspberries, cherries, lemon/lime tartness, apricot. A hint of foot-stink in the glass. Am I preparing for a lambic?

T: slightly: wheat, metallic, and tart - similar to the sells but a young lambic harshness, lots of yeast and phenols...minus the sweaty-sock-ness. Subtle peach and plum flavors once you get over the yeasts.

M: cloying yeasts, traditionally belgiany, and lingering in a manner that disrupts the significant floral and fruity smells. There are a lot of lambic/brett-aged aspects to this bottle. Rose, lavender, blueberry, and raspberry flavors persist, on nose, tongue and taste, despite the somewhat harsh yeasts. I'd compare this very favorably to CdF - and might ask for more.

A: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had a dark amber color and a thick, cloudy consistency. There was a big, rocky, fizzy head that quickly dissipated. No real lacing.

S: A very sharp aroma of hops, malt, light fruit, and a floral quality.

T: Tasted of light hops, some malt, light fruit (lemon, apricot) and the floral quality (presumably the advertised hibiscus). Also, that typical funkiness was evident. An interesting take on the saison - much fruitier than is typical. A vibrant, tasty beer.

M: A highly carbonated beer with a dry finish. Medium-bodied.

O: On the whole, this is a well made and flavorful beer. Not a straight saison, but still a solid beer.

really interesting beer, earthiness, cherries, some funk, a bit boozy and over carbonated, a little more balance and touch and this beer is phenomenal. I enjoyed it for sure, the flavors are there, just needs some minor tweaks.

On-Tap in a tulip glass.

A- Pays Du Soleil, A Belgian Dark Ale that boasts a deep mix of light brown and wine like red. Some ruby red. This looks like wine for some reason. A nice off white/ beige head stayed on top but became a cap. No legs on the foam in terms of stickage.

S- The dark fruits are the main scent with berries galore. The blackberry beats out the blueberry a bit. Belgian scents and some flower scent from the hibiscus. This smells great with no trace of the 8%. Some malt backlay with burnt caramel. Very light brett scents towards the end.

T- Soleil is a great BSDA, St. Somewhere does not do many styles, but the ones bob does really nail it basically. The berries are up front and are not cloying or large but rather tasty. They dont taste artifical either unlike some beers from unnamed breweries. Hibiscus flower blends nicely with the berries while the rest is small earthy hops, malt sweetness, and some Belgian yeast maybe. I guess there is some brett in here but im not really getting it.

M- There is some slight tartness when this warms though but this is not sour or puckering in any way, this is a BSDA after all. Medium bodied with a big fruity blast on the mouth and a slightly dry finish. Carbonation, not a problem. The 8% does not show up.

D- I would of gladly had more if I was not driving. Im looking for more of these new st. somewhere beers, I'll admit I've been kind of not paying attention to this brewery, but they are no joke. Pays Du Soleil shows that.

750 corked caged bottle poured into a Tulip. Very strong pop from the cork and a magnificent belgian spice sour flavor coming out of the bottle. No gushing but a strong healthy head that lasted and left heavy lacing. A dark orange / amber in color with visible carbonation coming off of the bottom of the glass.

Taste of a minty belgian with citrus, some brett flavors and a refreshing overall flavor build. This is a nice belgian, one that is more complex than some of the more recent that I have had. The spices come together mostly with spearmint flavors which I have others refer to as hibiscus. Nice caramelized sugar flavors and an overrall win which I was not expecting, perhaps because it has been in my fridge for a few months. Different and worth trying

Amber-red with a thin white head that remains. Good lacing.
Smell is tart, fruity funk with some spicey notes. Grapes, cherry, figs, and other fruity notes. Curious metallic note in there as well.
Taste is strong Belgian yeast and malts, with more tart funkiness, though less so than on the nose. Peach, banana, figs, as well as green grapes are some of the fruits I can discern. Peppery finish from the wild yeast.
Mouthfeel is crisp with a dry finish. Nice bite on the tonue. Medium-light body.
Drinkability is good. Alcohol is well-hidden.

Pours an auburn brown with a large head and left a lace ring. A tart, yeasty smell w/ a floral aroma plus some berries and cherry in there. A light, tart, citric and flowery berry taste comes across. Also a plus sweetness that is a nice addition and adds balance; comes from the yeast and some soft sugars. Goes down easy and finishes with some sour/tart flavors of berry and cherry, even a tad vinous like light grape skin, pear and/or apple. Overall I found this saison somewhat simple but a great drinker that hit on all notes - sweet and tart fruits, some sweet malt tastes, a touch of hops...def glad I tried it when down in Florida.

Thanks to JW77 for getting this one for me. Funny we live in Florida, hell I have helped Bob bottle, yet we got it via New York.

A: Pours a cloudy amber hue with a nice tall tanish white head. Okay retention with some spotty lace.

S: Lots of tartness here. Funky and musty for sure. Strong notes of berries and apple.

T: Musty for sure. Lots of very tart berry. Herbal notes with some mild spice. Mild candy sugar like sweetness hides behind the tartness.

M: Medium in body, funky, tart, dry finish.

D: Pretty good I drank an entire bottle. This one is coming to a bottle soon. The Saint Somewhere beers always seem better from the bottle than on draft.

I have seen mixed reviews of this one, but I really liked it.

This brew poured out as a big hazy yellow beer with a thick foamy white head on top. The smell of the beer has some traditional saison funk to it, with some grains and a light herbal note too. The flavors are mostly herbal, the hibiscus really shines through on this beer. The mouthfeel of this beer is well carbonated and keep a light refreshing feeling from start to finish. Overall this is a good beer, I really like this brewery quite a bit. Always looking forward to having more from them.

$11 750ml bottle. Color was dark, dark amber, almost brown with minimal head but decent carbonation. Smell was sour grapes, apples, smelled nice. the flavor gad a bit of sour, apples, flowers, spice, weird but very good. I am already contemplating going back for another bottle.

I got a bottle of this from the brewery on their first tour night.

Poured into my st. somewhere wine glass. Color is a hazy amber color with a slight orange tint to it. Heading rises fast and disappears quickly. Very little lacing left behind.

Some light fruits and citrus in the nose as well as a slight touch of sour and perfume.

Taste is a bit of the same nice tropical like fruits with a citrus touch. Slightly spicey and peppery and finishes with a nice alcohol kick but not too overwhelming.

Mouth is slightly slick and buttery. Medium bodied with low carbonation.

Very enjoyable drink. One of the best American made Dubbel's.

Pours a cloudy, copper color. 1/4 inch head of an off-white color. Decent retention and slight lacing. Smells of tart malt, citrus, slight hops, and yeast. Fits the style of a Saison / Farmhouse Ale. Mouth feel is sharp and crisp with an average carbonation level. There is also a noticeable tartness associated with this beer. Tastes of tart malt, alcohol, yeast, slight earthy malt, citrus, and slight hop. Overall, a good blend, body, and aroma, but lacking in appearance.

On tap at Capone's the other day.

The beer purs a darkish amber color with very good head retention and excellent lacing. This beer certainly looks very attractive. On the nose I get plenty of spice and rootbeer, with this beer smelling very much like well made Belgian style beer. Flavors on the palate replicate the nose, though I get some chocolate aroma as well. The description of this beer indicates that it was made with hibiscus, something that is prominent both on the nose and on the palate. This adds complexity to the beer and blends in very nicely with the other flavors and aromas. Mouthfeel is fairly light for the abv., but with a fairly long finish. The beer is moderately sweet, but the finish is almost on the dry side. Alcohol is very well disguised in this interesting beer.

A very intriguing effort from St. Somewhere, and one I'm glad to have had the oppportunity to try.

Pays du Soleil (2009) blows the mushroom-style cork out of the bottle before a person can even get the cage off! This one pours up very effervescent similar to a champagne beer leaving a rather frothy, frappé-style head that smothers the cloudy, deep ochre-orangish amber body. The aromatics are a bit muted when chilled, but become more prevalent when it warms to room temperature. The sweet, toasted maltiness dominates followed by some honey (Palmetto), floral (hibiscus) & citric (Clementines, Lemonade, Tangerines) notes, plus some yeast derived acidity & phenolics from the ale & Brettanomyces blend which gives a light funkiness followed by a hint of muskiness adding to the overall complexity. The flavor starts off with a marked caramel sweetness which is subdued by a lingering bitterness & an interesting spiciness (Annatto, Curry Leaf, Hyssop) which lend good balance to the off-dry, cheek warming finish. This medium-slightly full bodied Belgian specialty is atypical for a Dubbel but certainly reminiscant of a Fantôme Saison D'Erezée (Automne). Here's to a small brewery Somewhere in a country under the sun!

Another old archive review, this one from 10.9.09

Brewery to Bierkraft in Brooklyn, in keg, which was dispensed into 22 oz. Bombers at a growler fill station. It then made a trek to Ohio before ending up in dkachur's hands here in VA. Thanks, Dan

A: Reddish body, with ever so slightly off-white head. Retention isn't that great, but it tries.

S: Floral and fruity are the two dominant aromas. Almost a hint of sourness to it, very mild.

T: Slightly tart, yet curiously malty at the same time. A pleasant tasting brew, notes of cookie and a nice, yet mellow fruit ester taste.

M + D: Softer carbonation, but the beer has been on quite a trek. Medium bodied, smooth finish. Easy drinking, and any alcohol content is well hidden.

Bottle poured into a tasting glass. Had this at the Bradenton Beer Fest, my first beer of the day and the only one I took notes on. Brewed with Palmetto berries and Hibiscus flowers.

A: Somewhat cloudy, orangish brown color. A quarter of off white head appears, then leaves behind some nice lace.

A: Berries and flowers. The Hibiscus flowers give this a pungent floral earthiness that I really like. I don't get too much funk or barnyard aroma. It may be just a little young still.

T: Taste is orange peel, berries, and flowers. Really unique flavor profile. The brett doesn't really show up, again, too young.

M: Medium body with aggressive carbonation. A little sharp.

D and overall impression: Drinkability is pretty good. The floral earthiness will be a little much for some people, but I really like it. Overall, I think this is Bob's best. I can't wait to buy a couple bottles of this and sit on them, to let the Brett develop. This could turn out to be one great sour. Pick it up. Skal.

Poured out of a bomber marked 2009 on cork into my Duvel.

A - Cloudy, amber orange color with big frothy head.

S - Nice tart smelling fruity overtones. Apples and berries for sure.

T - Nice tasty yeast to start. Follows up nicely with the fruity flavors. Tartness comes along as well. Complex taste all together but good.

M - Good bit of carbonation with a light to medium mouthfeel.

D - Definitely. Well hidden ABV here makes this drinkable but a couple with smack you in the face. Enjoyed it quite a bit.

Pays Du Soleil translates to "country of the sun" or "land of the sun", which is pretty much like Terre Du Soleil except that 'terre' refers much more to the actual earth. Are they the same beer? ...

Appearance: Hazy amber-orange body beneath a short head of off-white foam that drops readily to a thin collar. Spotty lace is left behind on the glass.

Aroma: Fruity with soft citrus, tangerine, apricot, berries, green apple, red apple (it's initially a touch tart, and then juicy...), and some unidentified tropical fruits. Floral, and subtly perfumey. Soft spiciness.

Flavor: Follows the aroma. Fruity and gently spicy. The malt is very lightly caramelish, and simply acts as a base for the yeast to perform upon. Gently tart. Alcohol becomes noticeable as it warms. Finishes dry and peppery.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a limited carbonation. Smooth.

Drinkability: Nice. Fairly complex with a great fruity component and a hint of spiciness. Enjoyable. The alcohol is noticeable but not detrimental. Beyond its limited appearance it's actually quite charming!

Not really sure at all what to make of this one, so I brought it over to split among the family. Served chilled and poured into a pint glass, this one was consumed on 06/20/2010.

The pour was very nicely done, rich dark amber in color, almost garnet on the sides and the bottom with a nice two finger head of white foam that came up and over the to, settling down nicely and evenly across the sides of the glass.

Aroma was full, nice tart notes of fruit, plums, grape skins, an earthy, full fruity aroma. Nice touches of bitterness sprinkled in throughout as well. Warming brings out some more caramel, touches of earthy, grainy hops and a nice balance of earthy tones. Nice full bodied feel as the lush carbonation rolls across the tongue and really gets going. Smooth, even finish with a nice tart bite that really served to dry out the palate quite nicely.

Overall I am not sure what this one was but I really did enjoy it. It ended up being a hit that day.

A - 4.0 - Medium amber, darker than other saisons I've seen. Loudly fizzy off white head that disspiates quickly but then keeps replenishing itself with lots of carbonation to maintain a solid cap for most of the glass.

S - 4.0 - Fruity but mutedly so. Faint funk. There's almost a fabric kind of thing going on as I sip slowly with my nose in the fresh head, inhaling.

T - 4.0 - Funk, refreshing, sharp nectarine initially that teeters on the edge of green apple later, that familiar Belgian candi taste, moderately tart.

M - 4.5 - Medium bodied, just a bit viscous, and pleasantly so. Contrasting that is tiny bit of a citric sting in the back of the throat after you swallow and a bit of carbonation zing on the tongue. Doesn't seem like it should be able to have the properties of thick and thin at the same time but it does. Very interesting. Finishes just at the edge of dry.

O - 4.25 - A very interesting and delicious beer. It's just tart enough to make you keep chasing it with another sip and another sip. But its body makes each of those sips substantial and satisfying. Really a well done beer. I consider it very good for the style and would rate it higher except other styles reach loftier heights.
