Chose Serge for my second Saint Somehwere exploration, apparently this Black Saison is named after Serge A. Storms, the character in Tim Dorsey's Florida crime novels. Poured from a 750ml into a Riedel stemless goblet.

A: Pours a very very deep dark brown with 4 fingers of light cola head. Dissipates relatively quickly with very slight lacing. The beer is nearly opaque letting only a bit of light through, appears quite clear, though it's unfiltered, but definitely some yeast turbidity in the bottom of the bottle.

N: Smells like a sour, with tartness of cherries and some grapey vinous notes. But some roasted malty breadiness is there. You do not forget that this is a St Somewhere spontaneously fermented ale, as the 4-EP from the Brett is pretty prominent in the nose, but not to an off-putting level.

T: I was somewhat let down by the flavor which was nowhere near as complex as I would have guessed from the nose. Mostly tart cherries and sour apples well integrated with yeasty malty roasted breadiness. Maybe it's just me, but I don't think a Saison needs this roastiness.

MF: Relatively light bodied with durable carbonation which sticks with the beer long after the head has subsided. Lacking the peppery crispness in the finish. I found the finish to be somewhat chalky and muddled, not leaving me with a pucker which makes me crave the next swig.

O: A decent hybrid style beer but probably not one I would buy again. I think I really have a style bias against these dark farmhouse ales. Interesting and definitely unique, but not a world class beer.

Nice looking pure black colour, with a medium mocha coloured head of a couple fingers, decent retention and slight lacing. The aroma has a slight acidic/sour note, somewhat lemony, with a roasted malt character and phenolic Belgian spicy yeast esters. Tastes more roasty than the nose with some hints of coffee, raisins, earthy yeast notes, touch of spiciness, and a much milder acidic note. Its got nice carbonation, somewhat crisp and refreshing on the palate, with an upper light body.

This is likely my most favourite black Saison. Could be a touch more tart, but it's well put together and complex.

Poured into a Saint Somewhere wine-style glass. No freshness date.

A- Pours a mostly opaque black color with a full inch of dark tan head that doesn't retain long before soon dying down to a thick ring around the edge of the glass and a mostly full sheet of surface foam. Sudsy, semi-resilient lacing.

S- Effervescent carbonation with a saison yeast kick and some roasty malt. Also an alcohol fume that's too apparent for a beer of this ABV. Semi-astringent.

T- Odd yeast flavor clashes with roasted malt creating a duality of light and dark that's not very pleasant. Tangy, especially in the aftertaste. I'd like to say it's complex, but that would be giving it too much credit since all that's really on display here is a typical saison done with a lot of roasted malt. Slightly smokey. The alcohol is also apparent and in the way.

M- Chalky and dry. Medium carbonation and a hefty body.

O- The first beer by Saint Somewhere to truly disappoint me. I figured if anyone could nail the latest "black saison" craze it'd be them, but I was mistaken. Drinkable, but it's kind of a chore.

On tap at Kickbacks in Jax. Poured into a small snifter. Beige head, moderate retention, tiny, tiny bubbles, slick, soapy lacing. Body is deep brown. Aroma is leathery, musty, overripe green apples, touch of candy sugar and pear. Taste is very light and refreshing despite its dark color, lightly acidic, mildly bitter, slight touch of champagne, some dark malt and a bit of raisin. Wow. Very interesting, certainly unique and delicious as usual from Saint Somewhere.

Corked and caged bottle poured into Fantome tulip. Like most Saint Somewhere brews, the cork is lively! 2012 marked on the bottom of the cork! Nice surprise :)
Poured a deep black color with tan head...huuge 3 finger head.
Aroma is fantastic! Big funky, sour, cherry, leathery, with a roasty note. Flavor is chocolatey cherry, leather, funky, sour...its just so good.
Its dry but crisp...all around balanced yet chaotic.
I absolutely love this beer!
