Saint Somewhere Brewing Co. "Cynthiana"
25.4 oz. green bottle, corked and caged. Cork marked "2013"
$9.99 @ Whole Foods, Tampa, FL

Appearance: Cloudy yellow gold body beneath a thick head of white that slowly fades to a solid 1/4 inch surface covering, and then a very thin but solid surface covering. Tiny bubbles can be seen rising along the side of the glass to take their place at the base of the head. Wide splashes of lace are left behind on the glass.

Smell: Brett character: slightly tart, some wet leather, citrus pith. Golden malt. Sugar. Juicy fruit.

Taste: As the aroma indicates but fuller and more complex. Added notes of anise, flowers, grassiness, lemon, coriander, and white pepper appear. It's mildly bitter but still very dry. The alcohol is there, but it's not readily apparent. Some mild chalkiness from the yeast is present as well.

Mouthfeel: Light bodied and crisp, but readily softened as it warms and foams up in the mouth.

Overall: Quite an enjoyable saison! It's complex but still readily accessible. It's interesting to keep my attention throughout, but also straight-forward enough that I can just let go and enjoy it as well.

Pours a murky light amber with thick soapy white head, settles slowly, with a delicate spray of lace halfway down the glass. Smell: pear and pineapple, lemon peel note, grassy and mildly peppery, with a little melon-like background sweetness. Robust. Taste: lots of tart peach, into some soft and slightly alcoholic semi-ripe pear, grassy, then back into tart peach and a splash of acidic pineapple juice, finishing dry with stone fruit sweetness and grape skin bitterness... tiniest cheesy residue for extra oomph. Feel is super creamy, though the carbonation ends up being a little much over the course of a bottle. This is now...rotating?... 2013 on the cork. Tons of bretty fruit, lots of parts working cohesively... very very good.

A beautiful beer- mine was also a touch overcarbonated with a big head that took a while to settle, but not ridiculously so. Creamy white head with nice lacing. Smells a bit funky and sour, with sour fruit, apples and pears, a touch of barnyard, but not all the way to stinky cheese yet. Complex tastes of tropical fruit, lemon, a touch of spice, some sweet banana, a bit of light funk, and a light funky bitterness- but no bandaid- that underlies it all. Complex, but not necessarily deep, and certainly not heavy. There is an impression of lightness here, and it goes down easily- perhaps even a touch lighter in body than it could be. Not super sour, and not broodingly funky- just well balanced and interesting if a tad light.

750ml bottle into a tulip. This one actually blew the cork out of the bottle after I removed the cage. Have never seen that before. I'm really glad my face wasn't over the bottle!

Pours with a rediculous amount of carbonation. Like 3/4 of the glass is foam. Not ideal but speaks to the age and funk goin on. Nearly clear light gold body and the head is rock solid and huge. It leaves huge globs of lacing when it finally does start to recede. Impressive.

Lots of yeast in the aroma with just the righ amount of barnyard funk. Pineapple and banana notes along with some clove. Grapes sneak through and a touch of tangerine. There is a definite tropical note that is atypical of other saisons I have had.

The flavor is a big juicy punch of tropical citrus. Tangerine and pineapple hit right away but there is plenty of yeasty character and clove. Some funk is present although it is held in check in the background but lends a nice drying touch. Mouthfeel is on the full side with a touch of stickyness to finish and a whiff of alcohol.

Overall, a very nice saison that is different enough to be interesting. There is a lot of tropical fruit and some funk to make things interesting. A really good beer and it makes me want to try some other offerings from this brewery.

This beer was amazing... a nice sour funkiness melded perfectly with this earthy barnyard feel to really amp this up. Sort of like a guide/saison blend that really nailed it... not too sour but enough so that the aspects all came together quite nicely. World class saison right here... an amazing brew

Picked this up at Knightly Spirits in Orlando based on the reviews.

Served in a DC Brau tulip.

A: Cloudy tangerine orange color with a slight head on top. Chill haze cloudy.

S: Sour funk and then some. Love the bright farmhouse quality here.

T: The finish was the most amazing thing about this: So, so ridiculously fluid in its disposition. Citrus (orange peel), Belgian yeast, and ultra fresh filtered water on the end.

M: Very well carbonated, but that was part of its charm. This was almost a sour (wild) ale, but not quite. No reportable lacing left on the glass.

O: Best saison I've had so far in 2013. I really, really need to visit this brewery at some point: Pretty much all members of my wife's Greek family are from Tarpon Springs. Opa!!!
