I purchased this bottle at Grain and Verse poured chilled in a willybecker.
color is golden with very clear appearance and thick rocky white head with fine bead. The smell is a mix of piney and light earthy malt with subtle citrus hop scent. The feel is mildly bitter which builds with slight chalky dry quality and mild malt with moderate carbonation and light sweetness level with a moderately bitter lingering finish.
The taste is very good with citrus herbal hops up front with mild dry malt and bitter pine-like dry leafy hop taste mid palate with low malt sweetness and mild woody and dry spice-like flavor with a peppery quality toward the finish. Overall this is a good session IPA, if a little heavy on the bitterness halfway through compared to the abv as far as balance

Philadelphia Brewing Co. "Session IPA from PHL"
12 fl. oz. brown glass bottle, "BOTTLED ON 10/29/16" and sampled on 02/21/17
$2 @ Wegmans, Collegeville, PA
Notes via stream of consciousness: Nice label. Pours a kind of brass colored body beneath a pillowy white head. Very hazy. Unusual aroma of yeast and vegetal-spicy-woodiness, kind of like an actual tomato plant, not the tomatoes themselves, but the stalk. Better let it warm up a bit. No, it's still there. It's not bad, just odd for a session IPA. Moving forward, the flavor is similar. It's woody, and spicy - certainly not what I'd call hoppy. How strong is this? If it's at least strong then maybe the IPA designation might fit. It's not on the label. Let me google it. From their website "Philadelphia’s hoppy and light session IPA. PHL has all of the hop aroma and flavor that you would expect from an IPA with the alcohol content of a light beer. 3.9% ABV" - that's right, it's a session IPA so strength doesn't mean anything, but where are the hops? I'm not finding it, or at least any hops that I'm familiar with. You know what it's like? Spent hops. There's some spiciness and some pine, even some lemony citrus in the finish, but beyond that it's just earthy, leafy, and woody. I can't give it credit for hoppiness, sorry. Grainy, worty malt. Not bad in that area. Fairly well balanced with a solid bitterness that lingers nicely in the finish - not too much, nor too little. Of course malt and bitterness don't do too much for a beer overall. Where is the yeasty fruitiness? I get actual "yeast", but no yeast characteristics. And the hops, I don't know what to call that. They're a bit English in nature, but then they're also a bit piney. I don't know. In general, however, I'll just call the whole thing odd. Normally I might call it interesting or unusual, but I think it's just weird. I hate to kick it coming from Philadelphia Brewing Co., but this really needs to be reworked.

Poured into a pint glass, color is copper, a little opaque, head presents as off white but very thing and then dissipating to a ring.
Smell is pleasant: a touch malty at first, then hop citrus and light pine.
Taste is not as interesting as the aroma leads to believe. Malt is more subdued, light toast and bread, then hop bitterness takes over with a prominent fruity yeast byproduct.
Mouthfeel is definitely in IPA range as the dry, thinner beer can't balance to hop presence, quite sharp on the tongue, but hey its an IPA.
Overall, a very drinkable and easy drinking ale, a touch sharp in the bitter mouthfeel; would really like to try on draft.

This actually isn't too bad of a shot at the 'session IPA' trend. Packs most of the flavor of their Newbold IPA without the body. I suspect it would be better on draft though. Drank half from the bottle, half from a glass.
