12 oz bottle into flying dog chalice. freshest by: 12/18/12.

A: dark murky brown hue. head is off white without being very prominent. retention is a rim and lacing is sparse.

S: bittersweet aroma. coffee and chocolate come to mind immediately. a little bit of licorice. i was hoping for more in your face coffee character here.

T: bitter cocoa flavor keeps things dry throughout. however there are undertones of residual unfermentables. dry coco powder.

M: average carb on a medium body.

D: not bad, just not blown away. like i said about the nose, and even on the body, this needs more coffee. a lot more coffee.

Philadelphia Brewing Company does make many beers that I particularly like, but Joe Coffee Porter is definitely the exception. This is a beer that really enjoy drinking and although it isn't the best example of an American Porter, it is an easy drinking full-flavored beer with a nice jolt of coffee. The roast and caramel flavors from the malt are well developed in the beer and complement the coffee well. If you like coffee porter/stouts, this is a beer to try.

Pure coffee smelling porter, creamy dark roasted coffee acents going on, not bad at all. Bitter coffee nose and roasts all the way through with creamy chocolate layers and earthy coffee notes going strong with each sip. What a nice flavor profile going on here, I can get down with this medium bodied texture and extremely drinkable version of a coffee beer.

Philadelphia Brewing- Joe

A- Deep dark brownish black with a small tan lacing head.
S- Light dry cocoa powder and mild roasted coffee beans.
T- Light creamy milk chocolate cocoa powder mixed into creamy light blend coffee.
M- Very smooth and very creamy. Flavors are never intense.

Overall- a good, solid porter. Easy session beer here.

Many thanks to Beerisheaven for the bottle.
Joe Coffee Porter pours a dark mahogany brown color. It's close to opaque, but a few scarlet highlights are noted at the outermost edges. It's capped with a mocha tan head that stands about a finger and a half tall. It recedes to a surface covering fairly quickly, but holds firm there for a bit. I'm sure this Sam Adams glass is sustaining it at this point. Lacing was very light.

Roasted coffee is front and center on the nose. It's fairly strong throughout. Given my love for all things java, that's a-ok by me. There are some roasted and chocolate notes from the malts. The chocolate factor is bittersweet, rather than sweet. That's about all I'm getting here. It's rather straight forward, but smells pretty good.

The flavor doesn't differ from what the nose suggested. It is rather coffee heavy. Personally, I think that's a good thing. The coffee flavor is really tasty and acts a nice springboard for the roasted and chocolate malt flavors. They work well in tandem. Coffee is the strongest, but it's a perfect mix for the Porter elements. The strong coffee presence will likely turn off the coffee averse crowd. It really drives what this beer is all about. But, I like it. The flavor, like the nose, is simple and uncomplicated. But it has a nice flavor overall. I like it a little more with each sip.

Joe Coffee Porter has a light body. It feels a little anemic. Carbonation is light, but there's not enough body to have a great feel. Above average is as good as it gets. Drinkability is good. I'm digging the coffee flavor and it's going down easy. I can't say I'd stay enamored with it all night, but I'd be good for a couple of bottles.

This is my first go with Philadelphia Brewing Company beer. I'm pretty impressed. Joe Coffee Porter is good beer. There's nothing extreme about it, but it has a good flavor that works well all-around. I do think it'd benefit from a bit more body. But, otherwise, it's good stuff. I suspect any coffee fan would appreciate it. Thanks, Brian.

Nice, a good sessionable coffee porter. There's a big, deep roasted flavor, like espresso. There are hints of dark toast, cocoa, and bitter black grains around the coffee. The beer has a bit of body to it, but I wouldn't mind having several bottles. The aroma reminds me more of fresh ground beans. While there isn't a ton of beer grain character, they did a great job of presenting the coffee. Check this out.

thanks jyoungsbcp!

pours jet black with a light cream head that disappears quickly leaving light retention and little lacing.

big coffee on the roast. dark roasted espresso combining with sweet roasted malts and a hint of charcoal

coffee is lighter in the taste however balanced well against the dark malts. both compliment each other quite well. a bit of bitterness that has both a hoppy and chocolate flavor. light sweetness throughout

fairly full body with micro carbonation. i would like to see a bit more here. not thin by any means

great coffee flavors, low ABV, plenty of flavors make this a GREAT and easy drinker. im glad i have another.

12 oz bottle into a pint glass.

Pours a deep brown (with some ruby coming through certain parts of the body) with a finger of rich light mocha head. This retains with a thin foaminess and a smooth cascade that settles into some rich spotty swathes of lacing. The aroma is smooth with roasted coffee character, which is flavorful but not overly biting in the nostrils. Notes of cocoa, caramel, and green citrus rounds out the back of the nose.

The taste carries over, with plenty of burnt coffee and additional bitter flavors of roast and green citric bitterness. Some tangier notes of chocolate and caramel balances the bulk of this out but the coffee stands out in the finish, with a dry and acrid feel that lingers on the tongue. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a softer and creamier feel to the carbonation on the edges but eventually lays a steady prickle down on the tongue. There’s a little bit of warmth that lingers on the backend of the feel, which is surprising to me for a 5% beer. Its’ nothing too distracting though.

This was an OK take on a Coffee Porter and while it didn’t quite live up my expectations (or better yet but others have said about it), it still offered up a decent enough quaff. I wouldn’t shy away from trying this on draft though, as I have a feeling that this has the potential to pop much more than what it did here.

12 oz. single bottle purchased. Poured into a pint glass.

A- Midnight black with slight hints of brown. Coffee foam colored head yielded some pretty sweet lacing. Someone might mistake this brew for a Coca-Cola!

S- Roasted coffee beans and sweet creamy milk- ice cream like. Very fresh and potent.

T- Espresso, roasted malts, sugars, choclate/caramel ice cream. Sweet baked cookies- but overall a damn bitter beer. This is how i like my porters!

M- Thick, but not heavy and overdone. Consistency of the body was very appropriate. Went down easily and carbonation was just right.

D- This one will fill you up, so watch out. Enjoyable and full flavored. Good stuff- would sample again.
