glassware: Victory nonick...occasion: it's a cold winter day--enough said...aroma: brilliant floral bouquet: clove and citrus mixed with malts is exciting...appearance: dark orange-brown body with a creamy white head that befits the winter snow outside...palate: creamy, warm rush of thick, full-bodied ale--easily palatable, though...taste: definite plum and marginal spices percolate in the teeth--fulfiiling and appropriate...overall: umlauts are always welcome in a beer's name, and though they promise BOG taste, this brew delivers seasonably well....

Weathered copper orange in color and very murky. Poured with a short white foam that quickly reduced to a wispy cap. Coriander, clove, ginger and nutmeg aromas along with earthy, herbal hops and sweet malt beneath. Medium bodied with aggressive, tangy carbonationp through the middle. Flavors are similar to aromas with a tangy, herbal hop bite in the middle followed by dry finish with lingering spicy aftertaste. The coriander and clove characters tend to overwhelm the other aromas and flavors. I

Poured into standard pint glass, color is muddled copper to light amber, head is light tan, dense bubbles, presents at about 1/2 inch thick, no lacing. I like the murky look, lets you know there is some wheat presence to this ale.

Smell is one of the better winter ales, nice heavy dose of clove, with notes of nutmeg, ginger, allspice and cinnamon, balanced with the sweeter notes of the malt and biscuit and bread from the wheat, really gets you thinking this is a cookie.

Taste keeps the idea of the aroma, nice spice heavy presence, but in a good way: cloves, allspice are big, nutmeg, ginger and cinnamon are present; what makes the taste balance is the bready wheat and malt flavors, some light toast and caramel as well; the spices normally do not go well in a thinner, less bready beer, but here they make up the sweetness, great taste.

Mouthfeel is cleans up this beer nicely, the spices are drying to compensate its strength and the sweeter malts; the spice and malt blend creates a good nice lingering presence, while still drying

Overall, a great winter warmer ale, its unique in the spice and mouthfeel presence that is created by the use of bready flavored malt and heavy clove, nutmeg, cinnamon spice profile.

Two fingers of head off of the pour, mind you, it was semi-aggressive. The head wants to retain, too, with a craggy surface and fine microbubbles. The body is an off-clear deep muted amber color with some evidential carbonation rising from the bottom. 3.75

I smell a lot of sweet light spices with lighter citrusy peel notes, nutmeg, lime, ginger, allspice, coriander, and hints of cumin. Lots of dried orange peel, actually, and a certain stankiness that reminds me of curry dishes. It almost has a pumpkin ale kind of spiciness to the nose, but without the thickness of mulling spice. Somehow still wintry, and showing some lightly toasted pale and caramel malts. Still, it's a sweet nose, but it has a unique character about it that I give a nod to, considering the way the style is usually stereotyped aromatically.

It's mostly coriander, clove, ginger, and nutmeg in the flavor with some steeped oolong tea and bright citrus peel notes. Lots of lemon peel and orange peel and that hint of lime. Burst of cinnamon seems obvious, yet fresh, mid-palate. Gone, it seems, is that ethnic note of cumin/curry. I think I was picking up a combo of lime, ginger, and coriander with some added pepperiness; and running with it. Malts are thinner, but tea-like, in a good way. The cinnamon is becoming increasingly overpowering as I drink on. Almost, firmly, a cinnamon beer, at this point. Has a lighter airy quality about it that doesn't become pervasive with all of the added spices going on. It's definitely bright, and the clove is strong, too. It does not, however, have any ooey-gooey fruit notes to really saturate the flavor. Holiday beer, sure, but not over-the-top in all categories.

Medium to medium-light in drinkability with a medium body. Stays dry on the lips, even though there are some sweeter flavors that are realized. Almost powdery in the way that it's spiced. The carbonation has a nice fluff to it, making the overall mouthfeel decent.

It's nothing special, but it's one-of-a-kind; at least, in my initial experience. It beats the hell out of most of their other seasonals. Reminiscent of the holidays, it seals the deal; but the base beer is too little to stand by. Solid, but I wish it was a little more exotic, like the nose. Simply being fruity, or rummy, wouldn't make this beer worthwhile, at all. But, the good drinkability and all the parts that stand apart from the rest make it a beer to try this Christmas season. Prost!

From my dear friends at PHLBC! I have not been up to visit for a while, but not by design. I love yinz guys and will never forget the love yinz showed me as a beginning beer pest/beer monk/et al. CAN yinz CANsider a CANning line?!?

From the bottle: "Winter Wunder [with an umlaut, in case you were wundering], the perfect wassailing ale, brewed with a goodly amount of traditional holiday fare - plums, dates, cinnamon, allspice, clove, and a sprinkle of ginger all combine to lift your spirits and warm your demeanor. Winter Wunder is best enjoyed with the warmth of a good tavern in the clutch of good friends, new or old. Winter doesn't seem so long after all."

I went with my usual aggro pour which resulted in a dense foamy finger of tawny head with nice retention. Color was an oh-so-slightly hazy coppery-amber. Nose was riotous in terms of spices and fruits! Wow! Where to begin?!? The cinnamon and clove were obvious, but the fruitiness was also prevalent, but harder to break down into its component parts. I could hardly wait to get a draught in my mouth. Mouthfeel was medium-to-full, not quite creamy, but certainly on the approach. The spicy assault on my tongue was unexpected, but pleasant. Just as on the nose, I could easily discern cinnamon and clove, but now even the ginger was starting to assert itself. That and the fruit was also present, making it seem like a heavily spiced fruitcake. I had a Home Ec teacher in high school who felt that fruitcake should be driven by the fruit and not spice. I disagreed then and I still disagree, finding in favor of the flavor profile in this beer. You cannot go wrong with spices at this time of year and this beer was beautiful. Finish was super dry, like arid, man. The spices just sucked away at any sweetness and eradicated it. A really superior beer from Kenzo, so get some while you can!
