on tap at devils den in philly
Pours a mahogany brown color with some haze. Thick, frothy lightly tanned head rests on top, slowly fading into cloudy film and lacing on the glass.
Decent smack of hops in the nose with some pine. Nutty and slightly rich with a touch of chocolate. Toasted malts and a bit of sweet caramel.
Surprisingly hoppy up front with hints of pine and almost resiny qualities. Bready and caramel notes with some sweetness, a quick touch of chocolate. Roasted malts provide the backbone, finished off with some additional hoppiness.
Medium body, higher carbonation, sticky and a bit abrasive on the tongue. The idea of the hoppy brown ale was interesting, but it didn't exactly work for me.

A hoppier than average brown ale from Philly Brewing, I can appreciate that pours a deep mahogany ruby brown hue with a light khaki head on tap at Mad Mex during happy hora. Aroma has an earthy nutty tone with some citric herbaceous hop action kicking around. Flavor overall impressive layers of hops and dark roasted malts a touch of caramel, crystal, and maybe something even dark to roast it up a bit. Hop wise we're talking pelletized but earthy/herbaceous/citric doesn't clash with the darker malts but really brings a new complexity to a sometimes boring style. Quite enjoyable the kind of beer I could drink in number especially during happy hora at the Angry Mexican in Robinson. Mouthfeel smooth natural feeling carbonation again freshly tapped that day, full on freshness makes for the best quality beer. Overall a brown I will reach for again and it's nice to see a broadcaster tap handle in the Burgh that makes you think of the heyday of KDKA.

First had: on tap at 2312, Drexel Hill, PA (which was, I believe, the very first tapping of this beer anywhere)
Brewed for the 20th anniversary of Philly's World Cafe Live.
Served on tap and poured into a PBC shaker, this beer was a very dark, woody brown color, nearly opaque, with a nice cap of off-white head that receded to a thin layer of bubbles, and laced fairly well. Basic aroma, nutty, with notes of toasty German malts. Taste was fine, simple and to the point, with dark malts, grains (mostly oats), grassy, and generously hopped for a bitterness that, while welcome, was perhaps a bit unbalanced, as it left a bit of a harsh aftertaste. Medium-bodied, and easily drinkable, but again, just a little rough in the aftertaste.
