330ml bottle. Stern glass. Enjoyed on apr´12. Pours dark reddish brown in color. Chill haze appearance due dark color. Beige, large size bubbled, froth quickly dissipates. Aromas of caramel malt, sweet toasted malts & slightly yeast fragancy. Gentle moderate sweet to moderate bitter upfront. Ripe dark fruits, subtle chocolate notes. Voluptuos sweet malty palate. Sweetness lingers into the finish with a grape touch. Plum peel on the aftertaste. As usual in a good Doppelbock, ABV is well masked in this balanced malt beer.

Brown color, ruby red edges, light brown foam, a bit too bubbly.
In the smell a light toaste dmalt, and some quite intense hazelnut.
Malt, caramel, sugary, but not too well mixed. Too strong alcohol, too spiking caramel.
Not a bad beer, ok, but not too balanced.
Again some hazelnut, and a bit of hop that save the situation, but still, nothing more than an ordinary beer.

A: The pour is a dark brown color with some reddish notes and a tall khaki head.
S: Lots of chocolate and toffee on the nose with some brown sugar and cola notes. A fair amount of dark fruits and a bit of a Dr. Pepper note to it as well. Some light hop notes on the back end and a touch of citrus peel and spices.
T: Not quite as bold of a flavor to the beer. Toffee, molasses, and some dark chocolate. There is a pretty decent fruit component to the beer with some cherries and plums.
M: Medium in body with a medium, semi-creamy carbonation.
O: Pretty nice doppelbock here. The flavor could be a bit more intense, but it was good anyway.

A-Tan head that does not have much staying power-although it rings the glass. Color is dirty brown with some red shining through.
S-Malty sweetness, raisins with a hint of aged oak bourbon.
T-Syrupy sweet, molasses upfront and in the aftertaste. A non hop astringent aftertaste that lingers. Balance is definitely skewed heavily on the malt side.
M-Heavy bodied and viscous, low carbonation, lingering astringency, not crisp in the aftertaste.
D-Below average compared to other doppelbocks given the lingering bitter/astringent aftertaste.
O-This one does not hit the mark for me. The molasses maltiness lingers too much and feels like a defect. There are other doppelbocks out there that are more drinkable and cleaner. I won't be having this one again.

Poured into a snifter. No freshness date on bottle.
Pours very dark smoked ruby with a velvety looking light tan head. The head falls rather quicker than I expected from how smooth it looks, but the layer that is left retains quite well. Once the beer is lower in the glass, swirling it produces an amazingly creamy head- this is the most compact non-nitrogen head I have ever seen
Smells strongly of deep dark malts with a little dark fruit on the side. The nose smells stronger of malt than other similar versions of this style. Smoked malt is present as well, albeit subtle.
Deep caramelized malt is the most prominent flavor in this beer, and is supported by other varieties of roasted dark-fruity malts. Not as sweet as some, with a stronger emphasis on the darkly caramelized sugar/roast malt flavors. Very nice flavor overall.
The mouthfeel is thick and smooth, with a nearly cloying feel that borders on the wrong kind of syrupy, but stays in the acceptable range. Good flavors and feel sticks in the mouth.
Drinkability is very good but not the very best.
Conclusion: This is another very good German-made doppelbock. It trails a little behind Korbinian and Celebrator, but makes a good showing, and it something I will certainly drink again. Try this beer if you like this style.

Dark brown look with a hint of ruby edges...tan head almost two fingers thick after a strong pour.
Over ripened fruits...dates/figs/plums and ven reminds me of raisin.
Serious "maltiness' going on in the taste. Molasis, brown suger. Very chewy and full bodied. Black licorice detected.
Very nice mouthfeel.

Yet another brew picked up at State Line Liquors in Elkton, MD. This one doesn't provide me with a date code that I can read or any other features that provide any sorts of hints to when the bottle was produced.
A: A ruby colour is dominant, along with some brown hues that glow along with it. Head is rather short, mostly a white with a slight browning towards the edges. It maintains itself in just a slight bit of surrounding lace.
S: An unexpected nuttiness has a big place in the aroma, the first thing coming to mind being the softer sweetness that cashews offer. The maltiness is there as well, which provides a balance in this 'malt-dominated brew,' if that makes any sense (in fact, it shouldn't when I read it again!) Let's try to be more specific - there's an aroma of toasted malts, caramel, cashew or almond-butter, along with a hint of brown sugar sweetness that brings a nice 'fresh bakery' quality to it. Enough metaphors... on to taste...
T: Toasted malts are on the forefront, yet very sweet... quite sugary and there's a caramel and toffee quality to it while maintaining a lighter mouthfeel. With the more robust aromas and flavours, I think this beer does well with a touch of a subdued feel, if only to provide a balance that was not offered between flavour and aroma. Watch for just hint of bittersweet chocolate on the finish, especially with a little time to breathe.
M + D: Rich enough to enjoy rather sparingly, but not a 'touchy, feely' beer.' I wouldn't go so far as to drop all my eggs in the basket of reviewing or even savouring the beer for this long, because I feel the drinker might sacrifice personal enjoyment for rating/review if they were to wait longer. It shows signs of being a 'good ager.' Pleasant experience, and one I would look forward to again.

Poured into .5 liter stein a deep garnet color with a fluffy one finger deeper tan colored head that settled into a thick creamy mass.Aromas are toasty with notes of brown sugar, caramel, and dark fruit mainly,a hint of iron thrown in.Flavors are warming but not real complex, there is a nice toastiness and sweet caramel, some dark candied fruit as well.A pretty good doppelbock, although it lacks complexity it is tasty.

Pored from a 500 ml bottle into an imperial pilsner.
A: Medium-dark brown, with a distinct reddish hue. Pretty substantial carbonation, pours about a 2 to 3 finger, brownish-white, foamy-frothy head. Settles pretty quickly. Carbonation continues to surface throughout the body of the brew. Leaves a nice little blanket of foam. No real lacing to speak of.
S: Rich roasted malt, caramel, molasses, a little fruity note as well.
T: Malt is rich, robust, and sweet. A bit oakey. A slight bite of hops, and a non-distinct hint of spice also.
M: Syrupy and heavy initially on the palette, but thins out a bit toward the end, finishing with a subtle spicy twang. Kind of an interesting light woody aftertaste.
D: Good drinking beer. Goes down pretty easy, but finish is not my favorite. Hard to describe, just something not quite right.
Atmosphere is pretty solid. Nice appearance, and a really full nose. A little bit of a lot of different things here to awaken the senses. Flavor is pretty solid. The syrupy sweet malty flavor characteristic of a doppelbock, but it thins out a little in the finish, and ends with an aftertaste that is a little unexpected... almost like it transitions to it. Overall, this is a good quaff.
