My wife and I stumbled across this place while visiting Portland recently. I thought we had done fairly extensive research (mostly thanks to BeerFly) and knew about the best beer bars. However, this place is brand new and wasn't on the radar. It's a great place, and hopefully soon will be recognized as one of the best in Portland. Living in the Boston area, it was very refreshing to see a beer list that specialized in Pacific Northwest beers. They have 20 rotating taps. On our visit, those taps featured various offerings from Deschutes, Terminal Gravity, Ninkasi, Roots, Amnesia, Full Sail, Golden Valley, Double Mountain, Rogue, Eel River, Pike, Diamond Knot and Dicks, among others. There are NO macros to be seen, and the selection isn't for the faint of heart. Of the 20 taps, 15 featured beers of greater than 6.0% ABV (and Stone Smoked Porter (5.9%) and Anderson Valley Boont Amber (5.8%) just missed). With 6 IPA/Imperial IPAs (including a stunning Ninkasi Tricerahops), a normal Friday night for Bailey's was a bit like the Hophead Throwdown. They also featured an Imperial Red, Imperial Stout, Barleywine and Belgian Tripel. The prices seemed very reasonable (at least compared to Boston) with 20oz pints at $4.50; 10oz glasses at $2.50 (or $4.00, 12 oz snifters on the 8%+ ABV selections).

Although we didn't venture away from the drafts, I believe they feature about 15 well-chosen bottles (Avery, AleSmith, Ommegang, Great Divide, Hair of the Dog...).

The atmosphere is modern, with exposed brick. The floor to ceiling windows on two sides make the place feel very open and bigger than it is. The owner, Geoff, was extremely knowledgable, friendly and appreciative of our patronage. He talked with us at length both nights we visited.

Although we didn't try any food, the cheese plates looked very nice.

UPDATE - on Saturday 8/2/08, we were back in Portland on vacation and attended Bailey's 1st Anniversary party, which featured 15 barrel-aged drafts. This place held up to my earlier outstanding rating.

Visiting Portland from San francisco I stopped by Bailey's on an early spring week-night. I was initially really excited for this place and intrigued by the electronic menu. The menu lists the beers, ABV, style of glass poured, and maybe how much beer was left in the keg? The selection is mainly awesome beers from around Oregon, the definition of a cool local spot to me serves top local beers, so this hits the mark. The service was the only problem, I maybe got unlucky but a specific bartender was a rude wanna-be hipster who poured me the wrong beer on accident and then refused to replace it with the right one. I'll be back.

Very friendly folks, prices were dirt cheap compared to what I'm used to (I live in Oklahoma), nice little outdoor seating with great people watching. Was impressed with the outstanding local selection and the bottles. This place was one of the highlights of my recent vacation to the Northwest, and I will return.

It's kind of a quirky place--no food, no table service, just tap after tap of the freshest local brews. Nice people, friendly vibe, maybe just a tad too antiseptic (I think that the lights are too bright?). You just can't beat their selection--amazing, comprehensive, eclectic and served by a knowledgeable staff. One of my favorite places to drink beer in the world.
